The Stunt Man...Barbara Hershey, Richard Rush & Steve Railsback appear @ screening!

Although torrential rains poured down last night - and a truckload of puddle crashers swerved dangerously close to the curb spraying all-manner of creatures in sight (pedestrians in particular) - a posse of film buffs trotted over to the New Beverly Cinema to catch "The Stunt Man" starring Peter O'Toole.

Before the flick sprang to life on the silver screen, Director Richard Rush dashed up to the podium to enlighten the audience about the underlying theme about the film-within-a-film.

"Stunt Man has a complex structure," he underscored right off-the-bat.

"The theme is all about illusion and reality."

At this juncture, the well-respected auteur waxed poetically that people tended to view life through a keyhole of sorts.

"Because they can't see the whole picture, they tend to make things up as they go along, to make sense of things."

"If you don't understand something in the film tonight, just turn to the person next to you for clues. If they have no idea what is going on either," he chuckled loudly," then we're all in trouble."

I initially caught the flick in Vancouver (BC) when it was first released.

Thirty years later, the well-crafted celluloid offering has held up admirably.

In fact, "The Stunt Man" is a timeless piece of filmmaking that still resonates today.

In a nutshell, the intriguing tale focuses on a young man (ably played by Steve Railsback) on-the-run from the law, who stumbles on a film crew shooting a period piece on location in the countryside.

Suddenly, the hapless intruder is thrust into a make-believe world, that causes him to lose his footing (and sanity) momentarily.

According to the articulate director, the project was ten years in-the-making.

Initially, in spite of his success in the industry, the studios were inclined to reject the insider-look at the movie-making industry (with a big thrust on stunt men and the illusions they create on film at the drop of a hat).

When Rush approached the execs with the script, for instance, their immediate response was puzzling.

"Is it a comedy or is it a drama," they quizzed him stupidly.

The seasoned pro referred to the project as one that belonged to the "illusion reality" genre which ended up leaving them cold.

"Imagine, there is an assembly-line churning out Chevies. Then, a Cadillac comes along."

"They didn't know how to market the flick."

Rush noted that once stunt films like Hooper were released, he became hopeful that his pet project might get off the ground, because it had become a known commodity since it was first pitched.

However, when Rush took a second shot at promoting it to the studio suits, the response remained the same.

"What is it?"

Finally, one day when he was jetting across the country, an independent film producer made a financial commitment to finance the off-beat feature.

"There were so many occasions when I sat in the Polo Lounge and producers claimed to have the financing in the bag. But, it just wasn't so."

Even still - the heady offer he finally got a green-light for - took a couple of years to be signed, sealed, and delivered.

In response to a fan's query, Rush confided - that for the part of the "director" - Peter O'Toole was always his first choice.

But, Rush's lack of nerviness nearly screwed up the chance to land the celebrated actor.

"Through a friend, I met Peter at a quiet get-together. We chatted quite a bit, but I thought it was tacky to approach him about film work at a private party."

When O'Toole strode off into the other room, the visionary director beat himself up, for letting the opportunity slip through his fingers.

"You chicken shit," he inwardly cried out.

As luck would have it, O'Toole was having a conversation with another gent, who happened to mention that Richard Rush wrote and directed "Freebie & the Bean".

Apparently, O'Toole was a fan of the flick, so he trotted back out to Rush.

"I loved that film. I want to work with you."

Curiously, I was walking down the street one day years ago, when a stranger dashed up to me and gushed that I looked alot like Peter O'Toole.

Before I had the opportunity to utter up a response, the film buff was quick to butter me up.

"When O'Toole was young and glamorous."

During the "Lawrence of Arabia" phase of his career, I expect!

In the "Stunt Man", he's pretty dazzling, too.

Steve Railsback came to Rush's attention because he was a protege of Elia Kazan.

"I was cast for a part in 'The Visitors'," the actor piped up when the conversation turned in his diirection.

Rush pointed out that although Railsback had a masterful 'Manson' role under his belt, the film had not been cut at that juncture, so he did not have the opportunity to screen footage of the relative new-comer.

"I was impressed with the risks he took in the cold-reading. Right away, I knew Steve was right for the main character in 'The Stunt Man'."

Railsback, meanwhile, had nothing but rave reviews for O'Toole.

He revealed that in-between takes, he often huddled with O'Toole about the craft of acting.

The wide-eyed expressive thespian recalled that O'Toole summed up his acting skills this way:

"Art is choice."

For an actor, they both agreed, choices were what really mattered.

Railsback also confided that one fateful evening, O'Toole engaged in a sly little game with the wet-behind-the-ears actor, with the specific aim of testing his character.

"He tried to intimidate me to see if I could pass muster," he laughed in so many words.

Obviously, O'Toole was impressed with the way he handled himself that eventful evening.

After all, the following day - when Railsback stepped into his trailer - he found himself gifted with a bottle of wine  from O'Toole (wrapped ia a ribbon) with a note affixed to it.

The message read:

"To the most un-intimidatable actor I know."

The audience roared.

"I stood up to him. I mean, I had to show him I had the balls to do it," he fondly recalled.

Barbara Hershey (currently garnering rave reviews for "The Black Swan") came to the project because Rush was familiar with her earlier work on a TV series.

"Richard just blew me away. you know, I didn't think I was going to be able to do that scene with the old woman at the graveyard. But, as the camera started to roll, everytrhing began to click."

Like the others, Ms. Hershey was awestruck by Richard Rush's approach to his work.

"Barbara was perfect for that dingy role of the actress," he quipped in an after-thought.

"I don't give any direction until the actors have their stamp on the role and indicated where they intend to go," Rush underscored for the record.

A process that worked well in the instant case of the Stunt Man production.

Rush remembered one incident that makes him laugh and shake his head to this day.

Every morning, O'Toole would parade himself  before the director - for a wardrobe check, to discuss the day's shoot, and that sort-of-thing - before the shoot commenced for the day.

On one occasion, when O'Toole strolled in, it struck Rush that the wardrobe was not only - "dead on" - but somewhat familiar for some inexplicable reason.

Gotcha!

Behind Rush's back - O'Toole arranged for the wardrobe department to whip up a carbon-copy "look" - that Rush often sported on the movie set!

"At times, things got a little schizophrenic," he mused.

After the film wrapped, problems persisted with distribution for "The Stunt Man", unfortunately.

Allegedly, the backers managed to land a deal to screen the flick in Seattle/

"But, one of my enemies was inclined to book it into a movie house in the burbs. I thought one closer to the University would have been a better choice since that was where my true audience was."

When a reviewer noted that he intended to pen a critique, Rush made a deal with the journalist.

"If you hate the flick, then wait until after the release before writing your review.  Okay? If you love it, then please publish the critique before it premieres at the Theatre on opening night."

As fate would have it, the journalist gave a glowing review - and so - Stunt Man ended up running at the theatre for a year to packed houses (earning at least a million dollars during the course of the screening).

"After that - AVCO picked "The Stunt "Man" up - in Los Angeles."

When Rush's "baby" received a prize for best picture at the Montreal Film Festival, 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the "illusion reality" genre hit Internationally.

However, Fox was inclined to wait until there were Oscar nods, before promoting it.

"When we got three Oscar nominations, Fox booked the flick into three Theatres. One for each nod," he uttered up in disgust.

When the studio ordered the prints, that signalled a death knell, too.

"In those days, to succeed at the box office, at least 1000 prints were needed (today it is 3000) for a decent campaign to drum up interest across the country. Fox only printed 250 copies, so what did that tell us?"

In spite of the reluctance of Fox to go full-throttle with promos, though, the reviews were fantastic!

Even still, the flick languished around the country, out-of-reach of film buffs pining to view it.

In tandem with the re-release of - "The Stunt Man" - a documentary was rustled up to facilitate an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the project.

"I intended to use video footage and insert a handful of interviews. But, as it turned out, there wasn't any video footage available. Also, a laser disc presentation had to be scrapped because the DVD format became more popular as a form of technology."

At that juncture, Rush had to scrap all the laser disc scraps, and start fresh.

"I footed the bill. And, it was expensive."

The disgruntled director admitted that - in the final analysis - the documentary was a bit self-serving.

But, what could he do?

Hershey (casually-dressed and radiating a healthy glow), Railsback (more of a character actor today - than the heart-throb of yesteryear) and Richard Rush (articulate and in good spirits) - were all well-received last night for good reason (by the way).

After all, the high-profile trio were pretty generous with their professional (i.e., posing for publicity stills with fans, signing autographs, sharing amusing anecdotes below the footlights of the revival house, etc.).

A good time was had by all!

Dwayne Johnson...fans in cold @ FASTER premiere! Seats over-booked by Power 106.1 & CBS Films!

Up front, everything looked pretty kosher at the sneak preview of FASTER last night at the Mann's Chinese Theatre.

A stream of limos pulled up to the curb, lookie-loo's gawked at the celebs who alighted from their plush environs, and a posse of frenized paparazzi snapped away fevisherly at the stars who ran the gaunlet under the glare of the dazzling kleig lights.

Oh, there's nothing like a splashy Hollywood premiere, alright!

For the celebrated elite, that is.

In contrast, the highly-publicized event - which touted an appearance by star Dwayne Johnson - was a lesson in humility for the die-hard fans who turned out in full force to take part in the glitzy festivities.

Although the cast and studio suits made their entrances into the Theatre in grand style - the fans were left to huddle outside on a windy corner (a stone's throw away) in a long queue that snaked all the way down one dark lonley side-street - and then on - behind a run-down old building across from the football field at Hollywood High!

Many of the filmgoers - who initially turned up all gaga and excited about the screening - ended up standing in line for over two hours before they were turned away with crumpled invites in their numb little hands totally pi**ed.

Uh-huh!

Once again, sponsors - this time it was Power 106.1 and CBS Films - overbooked the seats to ensure there would be a noticeably large turn-out on the "WALK OF FAME" - for appearances sake.

How many folks are anxious to catch Johnson's new flick?

In the past, it was evident that Johnson once had a following.

For example - I witnessed excited crowds turned out at a CineVegas Film Festival screening of "Get Smart" - to catch his comic performance in droves.

Post:  06/16/2008

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2008/06/get-smartfans-screen-out-for-rock-at.html

In this tough competitive market?

Don't think so, dudes!

However, there was upside to the fiasco that unfolded last night in the mean streets of Hollywood.

Folks waiting in line behind the El Capitain Theatre were treated to segments of the Jimmy Kimmel Show (which was being taped in the same block on a sound stage which opened at the rear of the building into a spacious parking lot) every time the security guards opened-and-closed the gate.

Curiously, Billy Bov Thornton (a star of FASTER screening across the street) was a guest on the popular talk show last night.

In the final analysis, fans got their monies worth, but in an odd round-about-way!

That's show biz for 'ya!

Tron Legacy...sneak preview dazzles fans! Sony 3D Bootcamp thrills filmmakers!

In spite of the fact a 3D filmmaking seminar was kicking off at an un-Godly hour - I was still wiping the cobwebs of sleep out of my own eyes as I hopped on the Metro to attend the much-anticipated event this morning at approximately 10 a.m. - a frenzied crowd of film buffs stormed Mann's Chinese Theatre to snatch up a plush seat for the sold-out event.

The boot camp on 3D filmmaking - which was hosted by Buzz Hays (Senior VP of Sony) caught the imagination of a posse of newbies (and film aficionados, too) intrigued by the latest state-of-the-art animation techniques (and cutting-edge software to facilitate the shaping of their nifty futuristic projects).

As chief instructor at Sony, Hays has been a dedicated pioneer in the field.

The visionary down-to-earth executive was responsible for overseeing the adaptation of standard 3D stereoscopic versions for the IMAX 3D and Real D platforms.

Die-hard fans - and industry-insiders - touted his stellar skills in the past for the adaptation of BEOWULF (Robert Zemeckis) - for example.

I reviewed that film - starring Angelina Jolie - when it was first released.

Fabulous filmmaking!

In addition to the lecture, Disney surprised the guests in attendance with a sneak preview of dazzling clips from the upcoming release "TRON LEGACY".

WOW!

Fans were transported to seventh heaven (and literally went GaGa) when they were treated to four key scenes from the animated thriller (due for release in December).

Ladies, wait 'til 'ya catch a gander at the sexy young male actor in the lead!

Talk about swoon material.

News at 11!

LA TIMES Actor's panel...Carey Mulligan, Jesse Eisenberg & Andrew Garfield bare souls!

Filmgoers anxiously queued up in front of the historic Egyptian Theatre last night to nab a coveted seat at a panel discussion which focused on the behind-the-scenes underbelly of Hollywood - and bask in the reflected glow of three of their favorite young stars - Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Jesse Eisenberg who are currently skyrocketing to success in the film biz.

Despite shoddy production glitches - typical of the incompetent and unprofessional AFI Fest staff who organized the event - excited guests were hopeful that they were in for an entertaining night once the way was paved.

Indeed!

The festivities got off to a bumpy start as Amy Kaufman - the nervous host who covers the youth beat for the LA TIMES - struggled to get her bearings before the packed house.

It was quite evident from the get-go that Ms. Kaufman was a tad inexperienced - too green, to put it succinctly - to handle the task at hand.

But, the special event - in true show biz tradition - went on nonetheless despite a few ugly burps and distracting hiccups that stalled the proceedings now-and-then.

For example, guests were forced to endure a few awkward moments when the three celebrated guests trotted up to the podium, and were at a loss to fathom where to sit.

Obviously, the hapless actors needed a bit of direction in that regard.

Meanwhile, the AFI staff stood around slack-jawed, clueless about what action to take to rectify the embarrassing ongoing problems.

Once the panel discussion got underway, for instance, technical problems threatened to spoil the evening as well.

Microphones failed, film clips washed out on the wide-screen in an unprofessional fashion, you name it.

At times, guests were forced to strain forward in their seats in a bold-faced effort to hear the ongoing dialogue just out-of-reach on the cement floor below the wide screen, where the acoustics were definitely lousy to begin without amplification.

There was quite a bit of incoherent mumbling going on for the first ten minutes or so until the event finally found its legs and delivered up.

The audience was quite forgiving, so the event sailed on pretty smoothly, once the technical oversights resolved about a quarter-of-the-way into the panel discussion.

Carey Mulligan was the the most poised and professional of the three performers.

The lads tended to hum-and-haw a lot - even stumble for words on occasion - when the searing glare of the spotlight was tossed on them.

Andrew Garfield was probably the most intriguing guest of all.

Quite often - he waxed poetically (rambled on incoherently, too) - as he struggled to utter up witty responses to a handful of Kaufman's potentially-revealing queries.

It had not escaped his attention that pressures may derail his peace of mind in the near future - when he embarks on his next project - in which he portrays "Spiderman" (in a role Toby McGuire took on which ended up totally defining the character to audience satisfaction).

He joked that he'd be that guy in the audience lamenting the casting choice.

'Oh, shit! Who hired that English fool to play spidey," he blurted our at one point, to a roar of approval from the audience.

Garfield was probably the most insecure actor, of the three on the hot seat, too.

He worried about the way his eyebrows looked, what fans might think of his walk, that sort-of-thing.
The English actor had no problem knocking the profession - and actors, in particular - either.

"Actors hang out in a sandbox. Live in a dream world. And, they make so much money. It's criminal, really," he protested, in so many words.

But, he was inclined to confess, there was a moment in a stage production in England when he had a revelation about art and truth that set things right in his questioning mind.

"Deep," Andy Kaufman kidded in a knee-jerk reaction to the actor's obvious over-blown sense of self-importance and worth as a B-list talent kicking around the fringes of the Hollywood scene.

Occasionally, he was spontaneous, and funny.

When Kaufman asked how the three actors broke into the business - wondered if they had connections and all that - Garfield's lightning response was delightful.

"I come from the Garfield dynasty of actors. My father was a spear carrier - third on the left - in a successful Shakespearean production," he coughed up dead-pan.

Actually, through-out the revealing interview, he displayed a rather droll sense of humor.

Carey Mulligan insisted that she was terrified whenever she was forced to appear on the red carpet.

"I found it is helpful to have a Martini before-hand," she giggled.

I agree, baby!

"Or, take along friends and family, with the aim of seeing the hoopla from their perspective," she added as an afterthought.

"My brother went wild over the cops handling security at the Oscars. He hung out the window, totally blown away by their big guns," she confided.

The audiences were particularly fascinated with the two male actors since both just appeared in the phenomenally successful film bio on the founder of FaceBook (The Social Network).

I reviewed the film a few weeks ago.

Post:  10/01/10

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2010/10/social-networkfacebook-nerd-revenge.html

"I met people who knew Mark. They'd pass on information like - 'he had a weak handshake' - and that sort-of-thing," Eisenberg quipped gleefully.

But, for the most part, the fresh face in the industry was inclined to go along with the character fleshed out for the screen by the talented insightful script-writer on the project.

One actor noted that his cousin landed a job at FaceBook towards the end of the shoot, and ended up in the enviable position of being able to disclose some curious secrets kept under wraps until recently.

For instance, aalthough  Zuckerberg initially stated to the press that he was not going to screen the film, the actor's relative noted that the founder of FaceBook actually rented a movie theatre one day and treated the staff to a private screening of the controversial flick.

"Later, he took them out for Apple Teas, in a cheeky response to a scene where it was alleged that was the popular drink consumed by staffers running the social hub at the time," he snickered.

Also, Zuckerberg made a point of telling the cousin that he thought the actor who portrayed him in the film bio, did a good job.

However, the actor accused that it was a clever public relations ploy, on the part of Zuckerberg.

"He was trying to be diplomatic to my cousin," he summed up smugly.
When Kaufman referred to Zuckerberg as the "contested founder", by the way, he was adamant that  - "no" - his character (Zuckerberg) was a founder (among a handful of visionaries who contributed to the initial success of the popular web site).

Surprisingly, Carey Mulligan fessed up that she had a weird relationship with Michael Douglas on the set of Wall Street.

"We were quite distant," she confided.

After some prodding by Kaufman, Ms. Mulligan noted that the production was not too different than earlier independent films she worked on, in many respects.

"The food was better at craft service, though. And, the crew was larger since we were working in NYC.  But, the shooting schedule was just eleven weeks."

The pretty English actress got her first break when she attended an "open call" audition for "Pride & Prejudice" for a small role.

"I snagged it," she noted with glee.

The actress admitted that press reports alleging that she took the bus in Los Angeles when she moved here, and stayed at a Best Western Hotel, were true.

But, a slightly harrowing event at a bus stop, changed all that one day.

"I was standing there waiting for the Metro when a car - with blacked-out windows - glided up and pulled to a stop. The side window rolled down, and a man inside pointed a gun at me. Then, he laughed wickedly, just before tearing off down the street."

Welcome to Los Angeles, Carey!

All three performers admitted what appears to be a common fear among actors.

"I didn't work for a year after the Wall Street shoot. I didn't know if I would ever work again," Mulligan fessed up.

By the way, I loved her acting in the Michael Douglas vehicle, and raved about her in my review.

Technical snafus aside, the night end up a real charmer, in my opinion.

I predict these three - provided they get over their insecurities, unfounded fears and phobias - will go far in the film biz.

Break a leg, kids!

San Francisco...Castro Theatre celebrates blonde bombshells! Marilyn Monroe!

What's with the black suits?

As I strode up Castro a short while ago to pluck up an order of white rice and shrimp dumpling, I was forced to sidestep a pride of gay dudes out-fitted in dark suits, milling about in front of the Castro Theatre.

Friday August 27th thru Sunday September 5th, film buffs are paying tribute to Blonde Bombshells.

And, with a little style, to boot!

In addition to the sharp suits, a handful of the film enthusiasts are making grand entrances at the front of the Art Deco Theatre in vintage period autos.

A double-bill tonight featuring two flicks - "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" & "The Girl can't help it" - are packing 'em in.

If you missed the sensual romps tonight on the silver screen, there is always the classic "Bus Stop" to take in on Monday night (starring Marilyn Monroe).

See 'ya there!

Ken Russell...to appear at Aero Theatre! Devils & Altered States!

The first time I ever caught a screening of - "The Devils" - it was with a pal from Canada when we took a trek over to England and toured Paris and the South of France one sensual summer so many moons ago.

I vividly recall stepping out of the theatre into the picturesgue London Street around midnght, and remarking, how thoroughly disgusting I found the film to be.

But, I confess, over the years I have come to change my ideas about the Ken Russell masterpiece.

Russell will be forever remembered as a controversial and visionary artist with something of a third eye when it comes to making oddball dramas that have captivating images and themes, according to a Wikipedia biography.
Tomorrow evening - "The Devils" - will be on a double-bill with "Altered States" at the Aero Theatre as part of a tribute to the celebrated filmmaker.

Mr. Russell will be on hand to discuss his craft with the audience, so get there early, since I expect the special event will sell out quickly.

Aero Theatre

The Expendables...big, loud, ballsy! Cliche waste of celluloid!

The credits were smart and slick, and a dynamic score built up a helluva-lot of suspense in the opening scenes, but once the Expendables began to unravel (!) on the silver screen, it was obvious that a few once-celebrated careers were most definitely (out-of-whack) or on the wane.

In the build up to the World premiere, Sylvester Stallone trotted out his cocky old self on all the high-profile tabloid talk shows, to promote his new bag of celluloid tricks.

With a whimsy of snake-oil-salesman smoke-and-mirror chicanery, the still-attractive hunk, managed to convince TV viewers that it just may be a hoot to travel down memory lane with his paunchy over-the-hill gang of body-builders.

For example, in a sly effort to pack the movie theatres, the aging Lothario actually waxed poetic about his once-masterful action-hero days.

If "The Expendables" is Sly's vision for the future - and the much-ballyhooed return of action! thrills! and adventure! to the genre - then the biz is in trouble!

There were a few commendable bravado moments on screen - indeed - which flashed forward-and-back now-and-then, but most of the pickings were pretty slim.

The flick had a lot of firepower, alright, but it was predictably pre-packaged and Fed-Exed from the special effects team at the studio.

Call it formula flim-flam.

Hollywood Action Hero Film 101.

Even the popcorn was wasted on this doozey; after all, I fell asleep in my comfy theatre seat about twenty minutes into a thin plot that went nowhere fast, man!

If it wasn't for an - overly-loud in-your-face explosion or two - I probably would have slept right thru.

In fact, that was probably part of Sly's failing here.

There was too much emphasis on visuals and smash-ups - and not enough focus - on plot or story or character development and - blah blah blah.

Well, with Rocky, what did 'ya expect?

Stallone must have texted this baby, from one over-the-hill hunk to the next, until the script was finally hammered out eventually piece-by-sorry-piece.

If what Mickey Rourke said was true the other night on Jay Leno - about crafting his own dialogue for his scenes - then he gets the nod for being the one lone talent in a cast of misfits that couldn't act (or fathom) their way out of a paper bag these days.

Oh, with one exception.

Eric Roberts, in a smaller role, stole scenes (that's how good an actor he is).

But, when you get right down to the nitty-gritty, there wasn't much to crow about in that department.

Sure, the Expendables boasted a cast of action-hero heavyweights from an inglorious yesteryear.

Except for Rourke & Roberts, it was all mere fluff, I dare say!

In fact, when Arnold Schwarzenegger strode in at one point in a surprise (?) cameo, he managed to sully his whole career in an acting stint that was so stinko bad that it rates a "Razzy" this year.

And, it just may ruin his bid for President!

As to the action, well, a dash of explosions here - a tense moment or two there - does not an entertaining (or critically-acclaimed) film make.

One astute men's room critic hit the nail on the head after flushing the toilet on his way out the theatre door.

"That didn't make much sense at all, did it?"

Heck no!

Flush twice, it's a long way to the Executive offices.

Mickey Rourke...foul language on Leno! Jay fleshes out character...

Mickey could have been a Hollywood contender!

Ooops!

Did Mickey Rourke just call some dude a pri**" on Network TV?

Judging by Jay's stunned silence, I'd have to reply in the affirmative.

OMG!

After sipping up a dash of pepsi a moment later, the gutteral sounds sprang forth once again.

Mickey uttered up the vulgar derogatory term (often used to describe the male anatomy in the ugliest of fashions) a second time - and in about two seconds flat - the segment descended rapidly into a realm normally presided over by a posse of white-trailer trash rough-necks.

The colorful interview started off innocently enough when Jay asked the street-wise actor (known to inhabit his roles with great gusto) if he ever worked odd-jobs before he became a recongized bankable star.

Mickey started off by admitting that it was tough-going in his younger days.

But, fortunately for the gritty character actor  - he was blessed with this sort-of  Uncle (wink wink)  - who called him up with tasks to undertake now-and-then.

"I was in the money collection business, 'ya know?"

The audience roared!

Rourke then got a kick out of elaborately describing his first "job" - with so much candor and hilarious detail - that I was on the floor in stitches.

As the tawdry tale goes, a two-bit piece of hoodlum sh** allegedely owed his "Uncle" some cash.

So, eager beaver nephew (!) Mickey was hired on to pay the difficult dude a visit, 'ya know?

"I was kind-of a gangster," the likeable star chuckled to Jay who was bent out-of-shape forward on the desk all ears with ubiquitous chin jutting out.

"The guy was a real pri**," he growled.

Which caused a lot of tittering in the packed house on the NBC lot in Burbank.

Oh boy, THAT word again.

Mickey Rourke isn't a dude to mince words, after all.

"Well," he continued, "The tough guy was giving me a hard time, 'ya know?"

"The pri** didn't want to pay up, no Sir."

"When he started to play games with me, well, I snapped," he recalled in so many words.

So, I pulled out a gun, to scare the scoundrel a tad.

There was a distinctive "whoa" from the audience at this juncture as they edged forward in their seats in total disbelief anxious to learn of the outcome.

Was this a tall tale spun from Rourke's active imagination, or the real deal?

In a little scuffle that followed, the revolver went off by accident, Rourke excitedly recalled in his blow-by-blow account.

"Hold on, wait a second," the jerk-off belted out scared shit-less.

"I've got it," he barked out, as he reached for a wad of bills on the inside pocket of his jacket.

At this point, Rourke sat back in his chair, and chortled wickedly.

"When I went back to my Uncle with the cash, he thought I had done good."

Uh-huh.

So, the ballsy out-of-work struggling actor rose up in the ranks in his Uncle's favor, a keeper.

A short while later, Rourke was summoned to shake-down another dead-beat dude, who was allegedly a tougher piece of work that the first, to get through to.

"The basta** won't cough up the dough," his uncle snarled in so many words.

So, Mickey, trundled off to confront the guy, with ultimate aim of  "collecting" pocketting some much-needed cash for himself for a job well-done.

"The little pri** didn't want to pay up," he confided to the audience.

But, there was a big problem.

When he turned up to collect, it turns out that the scammer was a dwarf about 4 1/2 feet tall with a hump on his back.

"Man, there was no way I could make that dude pay up. Even though I knew he was lyin' through his teeth, I couldn't hurt him."

Ah, an enforcer, with a heart.

"So, I lost my job, go figure!"

"It's so hard to move up in the corporate world," Jay quipped in response.

The talk turned to his new film, "The Expendables".

In the clip the actor shared with the rapt audience, Rourke looked pretty "bad ass" with his long greasy hair, slack-jaw, and riot of biker-inspired tattoos that appeared to be inked all over his buffed - but battered-looking - bod.

When quizzed about how he landed the plum role, Rourke hesitated a moment, then shyly noted that good pal - Sly Stone - offered it to him.

No horse's heads in Sly's bed?

"When we knocked heads about the project, he told me I could write what I wanted. I didn't have to read for it, or anything."

For the record, I should note that when Rourke first trotted onto Jay's jazzy stage, there was quite a bit of hoopla all 'round..

Avid fans hooted and hollered amidst a thunderous round of applause - which I expect was due the fact Rourke has neared Pop Culture status - because of a character he breathed his all into -no stops-barred - in Iron Man II.

But, at the couch, the interview was off to a bumpy start.

"What happened to your hair, man," Leno exclaimed, as he gave it a shocked once-over.

"Did 'ya cut it yourself?"

"Yeah," he gruffly barked  back.

"I used to cut hair, but went a little overboard."

One side of his head was shaved so close in one spot, that bare skin was glancing through in a disturbing fashion.

And, 'round the rest of his noggin', the thick mop was cropped pretty close.

What an uneven, hideous mess!

And, his suit?

Hated it!

The icky pattern reminded me of wallpaper - and screamed of - Used Car salesman.

Rourke's stab at respectability with the mainstream movie-going audience perchance?

At the Iron Man II opening night celebrations his style was right on tap.

What happened, Mickey?

Though, there were a few awkward moments into the gab fest at first, Jay - the comfortaable old shoe that he is - managed to soften up the tired worn leather nonetheless.

If ever there was a role model for what can go wrong with plastic surgery, Mr. Rourke gets first shake at the title, for sure.

The Interview?

Memorable, troubling, revealing.

Which way he's going in his personal life - up, down, sideways - is anyone's guess!

His career, well, it's going gangbusters!

Ironic, that!

Death...releases the spirit! But, the footprints remain...

Out-of-the-blue, now and then, a screwball comment glides into my e-mail box which causes me to scratch my head in disbelief.

Some folks are so ignorant about subtle Noble truths and glaring realities on this mortal plain of existence, that it boggles the sensibilities.

Yes, life is like a box of chocolates, rife with both treacherous land mines and awesome treasures.
.
The nerve of a pushy handfull is downright disconcerting, though.

For instance, over the weekend, two individuals (unknown to me 'til now) zipped off e-mails urging me to delete a post which contained negative comments about a pal of theirs who met an untimely death in a traffic accident recently.

One of the blustery characters tried a bit of psychology to bully me into zapping the offending post into oblivion on the grounds that "allowing" negative comments about a person - in this instant case, quite a despicable one - was disrespecful to the dead.

In a nutshell, the publication of the disparaging post was initially triggered because of shocking abusive conduct levelled at me during the course of a local film festival (all to my damage).

I was attending festival circuit screenings in my capacity as a Film Critic in the Los Angeles area, and in the nerve-wracking midst of zipping off upbeat posts for publication on the Tattler (from a make-shift Press Room hastily thrown together by the organizers at a local Mall), when the wiry little know-it-all strode up and chastized me for allegedly "hogging" a laptop.

What a heapload of BS!

Instead of being grateful for the thouands of dollars of free publicity - and flattering posts which triggered quite a few ticket sales at the box office - the demented gal continued to gun for me thereafter.

At every turn, she pestered and annoyed me whenever possible, in fact.

At this juncture, her snotty unprofessional conduct - and a gross lack  of organization at the Festival - inspired the idea for an expose on the film festival circuit.

For example, I tossed  the glare of the spotlight on disturbing behind the scenes screw-ups, a lack of organization on the red carpet which caused film honchos to groan and mumble, and the shoddy way festival officials and inexperienced "could-care-less" volunteers dealt with crowd control, celebrity guests, and so forth and so on.

The neurotic little whiff of a thing must have been sitting on her computer to catch my posts fresh off the laptop - because seconds after the article was published on line - she bolted  through the press room doors and made a bee-line for me, crouched down, and hissed:

"I want you to leave right now!"

"Okie Dokie," I mumbled, or something to that effect.

As I started to exif, she suddenly screamed at me in a nails-on-the-blackboard tone of voice:

"Why would you do that (post the nasty article)," she angrily demanded, as festival-goers lolling about nearby snapped to attention all ears.

"Because you're an asshole," I retorted.

She glared at me in shock and - for once  - was totally speechess.

"And," I quipped - almost as an afterthought - "You know what? I never used to think a woman could be an asshole. But, you are definitely an exception to the rule, obviously."

In a sincere effort to avoid any further altercations, I plucked up my briefcase, and headed toward the glass doors for a quick exit.

Just as I was about to step through the opening that beckoned, the looney co-ordinator suddenly grabbed the handle, and tried to slam the door in my face.

As I was about half-way through the exit, the screwball loser grabbed my body, and tried to physically prevent me from going my way.

Gosh!

One moment, the dizzy broad was demanding I leave the festival grounds - in the next - she was trying to prevent me from departing the press room in one piece.

As I dashed down the walk to get as far away as possible from the mentally-disturbed young lady, she proceeded to scream out at the top of her lungs:

"Security! Stop that man."

Huh?

I continued on in a bold-faced effort to escape her bizarre clutches.

However, as I started to trot across the parking lot, she came from the rear (spunky little spitfire!) and  yelled at shoppers in the Mall parking lot to detain me.

When I spied security about to cross my path, I came to a stop out-of-breath, and asked for his kind assistance.

"Some wacho festival employee is trying to hold me against my will," I managed to utter.

Almost on cue, she dashed up to the security guard, and demanded that he prevent me from driving off until her boss arrived on-the-scene.

The security guard, an intelligent thoughtful man, scolded her.

"Miss, you can't physically hold this man against his will. He hasn't done anything."

So, with a nod from the Mall employee, I headed off to my car.

That was the last night I ever saw Miss goody two-shoes alive!

Then, as aforementioned herein above, I learned a couple of days ago that the power-hungry festival nut lost her life during the course of a traffic accident recently.

For this reason, and "out of respect for her", a couple of friends asked that I delete the original post.

On the contrary, it shall remain in its published state on the world wide web, until the sorry day the Internet falls down and goes boom all around us.

For the record, I take the position that while death "releases" the spirit from this mortal coil, the footsteps of the individual (DNA, too) remain etched in space and mark their place in time (whether good, bad or indifferent).

The notion that the young woman's untimely demise should be worthy cause to delete the post - which reported on her shocking abusive conduct -  is sheer lunacy.

When Hitler died, was there a cry for an expungement of all documents and papers and things Hitler, and his gang of murderous thugs?

No, of course not!

If I am not mistaken, while obit authors handle the "dead" with kid gloves generally, it is not beyond History buffs to give a brief run-down on scandals and/or associations which may have plagued their sorry individual lives, which resulted in a fall from Grace, and so forth and so on.

The attainment of " Death" does not bestow great honors on the dearly departed.

So, why should life's chroniclers take a stab at polishing up flawed personalities on the world stage, after the last gasp has finally sealed their fate?

* 75 % of the locations must be shootable in Nevada
* Script must be industry-standard for a full-length feature
* Open to unsold writers only

Judd Apatow...to produce PEE WEE HERMAN big-budget feature!

Judd Apatow announced through his handlers that he has committed to produce a wide screen version of Paul Reuben’s celebrated pop culture character “Pee Wee Herman”.

According to a publicist, Reubens is expected to co-write the script with Apatow.

The project is a boost for the Pee Wee Herman star, especially when you consider that Apatow’s prior films - "Knocked up" and the "40-year old Virgin" - were smash money-making hits at the box office.

After a much-publicized scandal over a conviction on lewd-conduct charges, which initially negatively-impacted and stalled his career, Reubens has struggled to regain his former status in the show-biz arena.

A break-through arrived last year in the guise of a stage production based on the Pee Wee character.

The hit comedy is slated for 48 performances on Broadway to rev up in October.

Looks like the big adventure is not over yet for Paul Ruebens.

Tom Cruise..."Knight & Day" sparks debate! Lead horse to water, at least...

Motorcycle publicity still better poster choice?

Shortly after I posted my review of "Knight and Day" - the Tom Cruise spy thriller - the hits went through the stratosphere at the Tattler.

In my caption, I shouted - "Tom Cruise...He's back!" - which must have triggered an emotion or two judging by the response.

Post:  06/27/10

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2010/06/tom-cruisehes-back-knight-day-quirky.html

Industry honchos, media pundits (and fans) appeared to have written the action-adventure off as a "bomb" based on a slow start at the box-office and negative buzz on the Internet.

In fact, I penned an article on the issue wherein I wondered aloud if "Tom" was still suffering from lingering image problems due to a bizarre couch-jumping incident, his involvement with the flakey Ron L. Hubbard's Scientology "outfit", and a controversial stint on Matt Lauer's hot seat in which he came off as a total pig-headed a**.

Post:  06/26/10

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2010/06/tom-cruisehes-back-knight-day-quirky.html

So, what gives?

Essentially, the Knight and Day fiasco all boils down to marketing (misguided) and the way "Knight and Day" was promoted.

In the morning LA Times, Patrick Goldstein pointed out that the poster - which featured a stunning graphic of the two stars - was part 'n parcel of the problem.

He argued that the failure of the studio brass to feature the identifiable faces of the two stars - Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz - may have been a fatal lack of judgment in the total scheme of things which negatively impacted the project (and perceptions of it).

In response, Tony Sella (co-President of marketing at Fox) scoffed at Goldsmith's wild idea that the studio was hiding the faces of the two stars because their appeal was lacking in a demographic they were striving to lure into theatres come opening day.

"I was doing an homage to fabled title designer Saul Bass," Sella fessed up.

"It was a way for us to signal that this was a different kind of adult movie. The whole campaign was designed to evoke a film like "North by Northwest (a Hitchcock classic)."

Because I attended film school, and have a background in the film industry in a myriad of capacities, I understood that.

If anything, the concept intrigued me - hence - my decision to screen it in spite of a bevy of biting press clips (and stinky rumors denouncing it).

I agree with Sella that the commercial spots - in which Cruise appeared to be a wacko dude kidnapping a woman - may have fallen short  in getting the film's essential storyine across.

If the studio noted - in a nutshell - that this was a spy thriller (and that Cruise character's was on a ultra-secret mission) Cruise fans and spy-thriller enthusiasts would have flocked to the theatres from the get-go when theatre doors swung open.

It appears, in retrospect, that filmgoers took a - "let's wait and see" - attitude.

Movie dollars only stretch so far these days, after all.

Call me sophisticated, if you will, but the quirky "promo" didn't phase me.

Frankly, I tire of "trailers" that reveal so much of the plot, that you end up saying to yourself:

"Why bother going to see the film now?

The studio's big sin was they didn't give enough "tease" - and as a result - left filmgoers and fans in the proverbial dark.

Fox brass  didn't even lead the horse to water!

How do you expect them to drink?

Tom Cruise..."Knight and Day" slow out-of-gate! Top gun losin' it?

A role in the feature film - TAPS - was his first big break.

And, in an interview with Charlie Rose, the handsome actor poignantly recalled that it was a dizzying whirlwind turning-point in his career.

When he flew into town - Sean Penn (co-star) - not only picked up the aspiring wannabee at the airport - but also invited him to stay in a cottage on his property.

Do you suppose any hanky-panky went down?

Ah, so that's where those gay rumors started up!

As to the work itself, Cruise executes all his own stunts.

Frankly, I find that practise DUMB!

An actor's body is his "instrument' - a tool - which he facilitates to flesh out a character.

Without it, an actor is pretty much up a creek without a paddle.

Leave the tricky stunts to the professionals, Tom.
In the heady day of the eighties and nineties, Cruise was a megastar savoring all the trappings of a spoiled A-list performer.

The pint-sized performer actor could do no wrong.

Today, however, the fact that Mr. Cruise is a practising scientologist often gets the odd-ball mamma's boy into trouble.

But, nothing can hold a candle to the couch-jumping incident on Oprah or the fiery chat with Matt Lauer on the subject of psychiatry.

When those scary moments unfolded unexpectedy across the old boob-tube, the public's perceptions of the  diminutive star  flew all over the map.

Although Oprah's fave guest has managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in the past few months - the talented "Interview with a Vampire" star - is facing other dilemmas.

Ticket sales have been dismal for "Knight and Day", for instance.

How would Tom  describe what Catheron Diaz (co-star) was like in four words?

"Bright, fun, generous, and talented," he smiled, after reflecting for a moment or two.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the film raked in a paltry $3.8 million opening day.

In contrast, Tim Allen's new release - "Toy story 3 - rustled up 13 million Ka-chings.

Studio brass weren't totally in the dark about the bumpy ride ahead, though.

Sneak peaks at pre-release junkets determined that fans &  filmgoers in general weren't thrilled with the studio's quirky offering.

Roger Ebert gave the "comeback" film  three stars, though.

The NY Times called it "loud, seemingly interminable, and altogether incoherent."

"Hollywood has been buzzing the studio might drop 'MI4' - Mission Impossible 4 - if 'Knight' doesn't fair well at the box office," one insider whispered.

Like many a struggling actor, Tom can always fall back on waiting tables inbetween gigs.

Charlie Chaplin...Gold Rush to screen with SF Symphony! April 15th-17th...

The San Francisco Symphony will play the original score for the  classic film the "Gold Rush"  at a rare screening on the Davies Symphony Hall stage (April 15th-17th).

The comedy was written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin - who appears in a role that he made famous - the "Little Tramp" - during the silent film era.

The black & white feature also stars Georgia Hale, Mack Swainam, Tom Murray, Henry Bergman, and Malcolm Waite.

A scene where the "Little Tramp" is forced to eat his boot to satisfy his hunger is one of the  most memorable cinematic moments from Gold Rush that catapulted Chaplin to great fame and fortune.

Chaplin, who also directed, got the little gem in the can with a budget of $923,000.00.

The Gold Rush was originally 96 minutes long in an uncut version but edited to 82 minutes when originally distributed by United Artists in 1925.

The Cinematography was by Roland Totheroh.

Break.com...young male demographic revs up revenue! Oh, and sex! sex! sex!

Spring break!

Sophomoric humor is a big seller, just ask the founders of rising Break media!

By focusing their market strategies on the nasty essentials for dudes 18 to 34 - such as beer, lifestyle products, and movies - the top brass at break.com found themselves salivating over the profit margin as their web of sites geared towards hornie young men soared in popularity.

Curiously, that's my demographic (according to Alexa)!

Perez Hilton, eat your heart out.

A bevy of bodacious babes - a mainstay at the high-profile perch at the trendy gung-ho social hubs such as Chickipedia, Cage Potato, Mademan, and Holy Taco - have succeeded in rustling up an avalanche of hits, too.

Heck, boys just want to have fun!

The precise marketing campaign boosted the traffic thirty-five percent in 2009 to a staggering 27.9 million visitors in February.

Currently, Break.com is the 11th most-popular video network behind you-know-who.

Investors have not been shrinking violets, either.

Lionsgate invested about $23 million dollars in stock in 2009 which amounts to a 41 percent  stake.

Keith Richman (CEO & founder) chuckled in a recent interview that "break" is Comedy Central meets MTV's jackass meets America's Funniest Home videos meets Maxim magazine.

As the success of properties streak along at break-neck run-a-way speeds, Richman has turned the corner and expanded into gaming.

A Shanghai-based development studio is slated to introduce 5 new games in the near future with the break logo etched on the eye-catching packaging.

The success of their current offering - MMA FightPicker - paved the way.

Some may recall that break.com was formally bigboyz.com in its halcyon days.

Richman and his associates snapped up the potential money-maker with a paltry start-up nest egg of approximately 1.5 million dollars in 2004.

Unlike YouTube, break.com pays for video content, but getting the nod for broadcast from the powers-that-be is a tough nut to crack.

Most submissions (they pay flat fees of $400.00 to $2,000) don't have a lot of mass appeal, Richman sighed.

"The videos appeal to friends and contemporaries," he noted for the record.

The ideal "break" artist goes beyond content that consists primarily of prat falls, pranks, stunts, music video paradies, and stupid pet tricks (sorry - Dave Letterman - keep submitting).

At break, a young filmaker may land just that - a break into the business - according to the astute exec with a finger on the pulse of America's raging hormones.

Judging by the tone of his interviews with the media, the innovative visionary with an eye on the almighty buck, is proud to be a part of the lofty achievement beyond all the farting, gratuitous sex, fantasy gaming, and what-have-you.
