Barack Obama...awards Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk! Gay Activist & others recognized as "agents of change"...

Joe Medicine Crow (Plains Native Indian) receives Medal of Freedom

At a White House ceremony on August 12th, the President will bestow the Nation's highest honor - a Medal of Freedom - on citizens widely known for their good works in the fields of the arts, sciences, sports, politics, and social movements.

The underlying theme of the auspicious occasion figures prominently in the grand scheme of President Barack Obama.

After all, his honorees - gay activist Harvey Milk, for instance - are a a handful of high-profile individuals Barack Obama perceives as "Agents of Change".

When the list of Freedom of Medal receipients was first-released, a spokesperson duly noted for the record, that all of the celebrated nominees "blazed trails and broke down barriers."

In a statement issued to the press, Barack Obama used his own deft touch, to elaborate further.

"These outstanding men and women represent an incredible diversity of backgrounds. Yet they share one overriding trait: each has been an agent of change. Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way."

In addition to Milk, individuals singled out for the prestigious honor include:

Jack Kemp

Jack Kemp was primarily known as a U.S. Congressman who served his constituents (and country well) in more prosperous times (1971-1989).

But, he also wore a hat as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (1989/1993).

In 1996, he was a Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States.

Kemp was a professional football player (1957/1969) - who led the Buffalo Bills to U.S. Football League championships in 1964 & 1965 respectively - before entering public service.

In Congress and as a Cabinet Secretary, while actively engaging in his key political role(s) in Congress and as Cabinet Secretary, Kemp stumped tirelessly to encourage development in what was perceived then as "undeserved urban communities".

He often referred to himself as a "bleeding heart conservative" and the image stuck with American Voters.

In the private sector, in the years just prior to his death, Kemp selflessly put the spotlight on the difficult challenges faced by the impoverished , and worked across party lines to improve the quality of life for his fellow Americans and citizens of the world, in general.

Senator Edward Kennedy

Considered over the long haul to be one of the great lawmakers of our time, Kennedy has loyally served his country for approximately forty-six years.

Some of his accomplishments include reforming the public schools, strengthening civil rights laws, and supporting the U.S. worker.

In a nutshell, his epitaph might read as follows:

Senator Kennedy

A man for all seasons
who dedicated every fibre of his being
in the good fight for equal opportunity, fairness and justice
for all Americans

The Senator, a celebrated member of the Kennedy "clan", has worked tirelessly to ensure that every American has access to quality affordable health care, which is at issue in the corridors of power in Washington just now.

"Health care reform is the "cause of his life," he has asserted to all within earshot.

With that, the charismatic politician chose to dive into the fray - and over the long term - managed to champion every health care bill enacted by Congress over the course of the last five decades.

The "Lion of the Senate" is not only widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his commitment to progress, but also his keen ability to legislate wisely without fault.

The Senator is brother to former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy.

Both were felled by murderous hands while serving their country.

Reverend Joseph Lowery

Reverend Lowery is a recognized leader in significant activist causes and has been known as a front-runner in the U.S. civil rights movement since the early 1950s.

Lowery helped organize the City of Montgomery bus boycott after Rosa Parks was denied a seat, and later co-founded a Civil Rights Organization (Southern Christian Leadership Conference)with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The respected and much-loved Reverend not only led the landmark march from Selma to Montgomery - but since that fateful day in 1965 - has passionately continued (without wavering thereafter) to shed light in the dark corners of the world to effectively champion the cause of Civil Rights.

Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu is an Anglican Archbishop emeritus.

Tutu is "South Africa's moral conscience," according to some.

Tutu was a leading anti-apartheid activist in South Africa, then later served as General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) in the years 1978 through 1985.

A formidable crusader, he has always endeavoured to bring about justice and racial reconciliation in South Africa.

Obama's nominee for the "Medal of Freedom" on these shores, was previously honored with a Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts with SACC (1984).

In 1986, Tutu was elected Archbishop of Cape Town.

When the role of Chair of the South Africa Truth and Reconciliation Commission presented itself in 1995, he graciously accepted the post.

Although Tutu retired as Archbishop, today - in his capacity as an Elder - he commands widespread respect in a symbolic role he does not take lightly.

Billie Jean King

Billie Jean King was a professional tennis player (1960/1970).

King wisely traded off her moment in the spotlight to champion gender equality issues in the once male-dominated field of sports.

On a whimsical note, Billie Jean King roundly beat out Bobby Riggs in a "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, which became the most-watched tennis ratings-getter in television history.

In 1981, King became one of the first openly-lesbian sports figures of major note in America.

When she hung up the tennis rackets for good, King became the first woman commissioner in professional sports when she co-founded and led the World Team Tennis (WTT) League.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

The first woman to warm the bench on the U. S. Supreme Court (retired 2006).

President Reagan was a chief supporter who nominated her for the post in 1981.

In earlier career pursuits in Arizona, O’Connor served as a state trial jurist, appellate court judge, and a member of the Arizona state senate (where she dazzled keen observers daily after she broke the glass ceiling to become the first woman in the U.S. to ever lead a state senate as Senate Majority Leader).

O’Connor graduated Stanford Law School (3rd in Class standing) during an era when those of the female persuasion were inclined to toil away in low-level menial task jobs and rarely entertain lofty notions about aspirations in the legal profession.

For a brief stint, the former Chief Justice served on the Stanford Law Review.

Later, O'Connor was elected to the "Order of the Coif".

Although retired, feisty O’Connor was not inclined to go out to pasture peacefully, without kicking up a bit of new turf, first.

Since 2006, the "gracious lady" has served as Chancellor of the College of William and Mary, become actively involved hands-on with the Board of Trustees of the National Constitution Center, and boldly sauntered into International terrain when she joined the Iraq Study Group.

Today, O'Connor appears to be content lecturing on public service.

Chita Revera

By many standards, Chita Rivera is an accomplished and versatile actress, singer, and dancer, with two Tony Awards under her belt.

Reflect on the lively out-going star's long distinguished show-biz career in the performing arts for just a second, and it becomes evident that Revera no doubt inspired a generation of young Hollywood hopefuls to follow in her footsteps.

In 2002, the unwitting survivor, became the first Hispanic recipient of the highly-prized Kennedy Center Honor.

Who could ever forget her electric portrayal of "Anita" (a signature role) in the original premiere of the classic Broadway hit musical "West Side Story"?

Rivera continued to hit the boards after that first auspicious splashy entrance many moons ago on Tin Pan Alley.

The highlights include dazzling stage performances Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, and Jerry’s Girls.

In - "The Dancer’s Life" - Chita Revera took a risk (and bared her soul) in a well-received autobiographical musical, which celebrated life in the theatre.

Stephen Hawkins

Hawking is an internationally-recognized theoretical physicist who holds a prestigious post as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University.

To many, the good-natured genius is easily in league with Isaac Newton, a previous post-holder (1669).

Although Hawkins is best-known for his pioneering academic research in mathematics and physics, the gifted numbers-pusher has been also penned three popular science books.

"A Brief History of Time" was a best-seller read across literary circles.

The reason for this phenomenon was obvious!

Hawking believes that non-academics should be able to access his work just as physicists are, and hence, wrote a tome that accomplished that task, admirably.

Mary Robinson

Robinson was the first female President of Ireland (1990 – 1997).

A former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997 /2002), the ever-ambitious (competent) politician has also admirably served as a member of the Irish Senate.

Currently, the former Irish Prez, wears two hats.

In addition to her high-profile role as Honorary President of Oxfam International, she also Chairs the Board of Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI Alliance).

Robinson founded - "Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative" - an organization she presides over as President at the organization's base of operations in New York City.

In a nutshell, the main purpose of the initiative is to ensure that human rights are the prevailing compass bearings which chart the course for a globalization on this mortal coil (as Shakespeare might coin it) that is fair, just and of benefit to all.

Nancy Goodman Brinker

The founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure which is the world’s leading breast cancer grass roots organization.

Brinker established the organization in memory of her sister, who passed away from breast cancer in 1980.

Through innovative events like Race for the Cure, the organization has given and invested over $1.3 billion for research, health services and education services since its founding in 1982 and developed a worldwide network of breast cancer survivors and activists who are working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find cures.

Brinker served in government as U.S. Ambassador to Hungary (2001 – 2003), Chief of Protocol of the U.S. (2007 – 2009), and Chair of the President’s Cancer Panel (1990).

In May, Nancy Goodman Brinker was named the first-ever World Health Organization's Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control.

Dr. Pedro Jose Greer Jr.

Greer is a physician and the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at the Florida International University School of Medicine, where he doubles as Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society.

The selfless good doctor is the founder of Camillus Health Concern, an agency that provides medical care to over 10,000 homeless patients a year in the city of Miami.

He is also the founder and medical director of the St. John Bosco Clinic which provides basic primary medical care to disadvantaged children and adults in the Little Havana community.

Understandably, the great humanitarian has also been singled out with three Papal Medals as well as the prestigious MacArthur "genius grant".

Joe Medicine Crow (High Bird)

Dr. Joe Medicine Crow, the sole surviving Plains Indian War Chief, is author to a legacy of seminal literary works in Native American history and culture

According to historians of note, Medicine Crow is the last person alive to have received direct oral testimony from a participant in the Battle of the Little Bighorn - his grandfather - who was a scout for General George Armstrong Custer.

While on active duty in World War II, Medicine Crow fulfilled four tasks required to become a "war chief" -one of which - included stealing fifty Nazi SS horses from a German camp.

Medicine Crow was the first member of his tribe to attend college and secure a well-earned Master’s degree in anthropology (1939).

During his lifetime, Dr. Crow has always endeavoured to make significant contributions to the preservation of the culture and history of his ancestors, the first Americans on these shores.

Consequently, his importance as a role model to young Native Americans across the country, is unflinching.

Today, the legendary bigger-than-life War Chief, continues to lecture at universities and notable institutions such as the United Nations.

Sidney Poitier

Poitier is one of the most celebrated Afro-American actors here and abroad.

The charismatic leading man landed his first break in show biz when Daryl F. Zanick cast him in the feature film, "No Way Out".

Poitier's performance as a doctor treating a white bigot got him plenty of notice from critics and the press alike, which propelled him into meatier roles in higher-quality productions in the mainstream cinema.

These auspicious beginnings set the stage for his lofty climb to greater heights on the American filmmaking scene which was rapidly transforming at the time.

The end result being - that Sidney Poitier became the first black actor to win a coveted Oscar for his magnetic performance in the charming celluloid offering - "Lillie's of the Field".

On the heels of this triumph, Poitier became the undisputed role model for Afro-Americans seeking to grasp a brass ring, previously beyond their reach in an industry-town that dealt with stale unrealistic stereo-types (especially in respect to race).

For the record, young Hollywood hopefuls may want to take note for future reference, that Poitier began his acting career - in spite of the fact he was without any training or on-camera or stage experience - by auditioning at the American Negro Theatre with just a hope and a prayer.

Trivial buffs and die-hard fans point out that Poitier was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1974).

Unlike an "honorary knighthood", it is actually a substantive knighthood, since the actor Poitier is a citizen of the Bahamas.

Because his homeland was a Commonwealth realm at the time of his appointment, Poitier is recognized under the British Honours System.

Hence, the dignified Poitier is entitled to be addressed as "Sir Sidney Poitier".

Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk became the first openly gay elected official from a major city in the United States when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (1977).

Not without a fight, though, as best depicted in Gus Vant Sant's well-lauded screen bio "MILK" (which garnered a coveted Best Actor Oscar for a riveting portrayal fleshed out on screen by talented Sean Penn).

Although the slightly naive Milk was a likable street-wise activist with an infectious personality, he was the target of much hate when he first set up camp in the Castro District - a mixed neighborhood in those heady days - because he encouraged lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens to live openly about their sexuality.

Coming out was the only way they could change society and achieve social equality, according to impassioned politician, who was an "agent of change" in this regard.

In spite of the headway gay activists were making in the Bay area, both Milk & San Francisco Mayor George Moscones were viciously shot down (1978) by a disgruntled employee (former city supervisor Dan White) who felt threatened personally, professionally, and spiritually by the in-roads Milk & Moscone were making in respect to the "gay cause" in San Francisco social and political circles.

Today, in addition to being credited for introducing the infamous "pooper scooper" City Ordinance (enforcing mandatory street clean-up etiquette on pet owners around the city), Milk is revered nationally and globally as a pioneer of the LGBT civil rights movement for his exceptional leadership and dedication to equal rights.

Dr. Janet Davidson Rowley

An American human geneticist, Rowley is the Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics at The University of Chicago.

The brilliant scientist (and tireless humanitarian) was the first to identify a chromosomal translocation as the cause of leukemia and other cancers.

High-profile Rowley is internationally renowned for her studies of chromosome abnormalities in human leukemia and lymphoma, which have led to dramatically improved survival rates for previously incurable cancers and the development of targeted therapies.

The Nation's highest scientific honor was bestowed on her in 1999 when President Clinton awarded her with the much-deserved National Medal of Science.

Muhammad Yumus

Yunus is a global leader in respect to anti-poverty efforts and is widely-known (and respected) for pioneering the use of "micro-loans" to poor "non-credit-worthy" individuals without collateral.

A trained economist, Dr. Yunus founded the Grameen Bank in his native Bangladesh, to realize his dream (considered lofty and beyond reach to critics here and abroad at the time) to provide small low-interest loans to the poor - with the ultimate aim - of bettering the quality of life for the needy (1983).

Decades later, Grameen Bank has not only managed to remain sustainable (despite low interest rates), but spread its financial wings.

The Grameen Bank (and Yanus philosophy) is a role model emulated throughout the world today.

Yanus was subsequently singled out for a Nobel Peace Prize in view of his altruistic efforts and self-less humanitarian acts, which hastened the financial wherewithal for povert-stricken.

Obama, first-rate choices, all!

West Hollywood Sheriff...has sh** for brains! Needlessly harasses resident abiding by the letter of law...

You'd think that with all the brouhaha raging in recent days over the racist incident which stirred up a Hornet's nest of trouble back east (even forcing the Prez to eat crow with the best of 'em) that Law Enforcement would sit up and take notice - even lay low a tad for a few scant weeks - until the pig stink passed over.

Nope!

Yesterday morning a friend of mine pulled into a local coffee shop, and was barely inside ordering up a steaming cup of Java, when one of West Hollywood's dumbest officers was all over his vehicle like a fly on sh**.

The jar heads just don't get it, do they?

Turns out the copper in question (who harassed my pal needlessly at the crack of dawn at 5 in the a.m.) must have been a rookie - either that - or he was just a low-life wannabee who scammed his way onto the force by having some wise-guy take the GED on the sly on his behalf so he could meet the general requirements for gainful grunt employment at the WeHo Sheriff's Department.

Judging by his inappropriate conduct, the low-level law enforcement officer obviously doesn't have any reasoning powers to speak of.

In the final analysis - quite frankly - he has sh** for brains.

For example, as my friend waited for his morning pick-me-up at the take-out counter, he half-turned and spied the officer stop on a dime in front of his relatively-new vehicle - and quite literally - shake his head from side-to-side as he gazed at the front end.

Duh!

Was he on drugs, my pal wondered to himself.

Or, maybe he was suffering from a severe case of sugar hangover after scoffing down a-dozen-or-so doughnuts with sprinkles on top, as he twiddled his thumbs on "fag" duty on La Jolla Avenue the night before in ever-cruisy WeHo?

After all, my friend's newly-purchased SUV was street legal, and shouldn't have aroused any suspicion.

A second later, the pudgy dough boy gave my buddy a quizzical grin - then pointedly directed a question in his direction.

"Have you ever been stopped for not displaying a second plate upfront?"

Duh!

If the dim-witted lug head possessed a modicum of intelligence - or been on-the-ball at least - maybe he would have been inclined to scan the windshield for at least one little clue before barging into the doughnut shop and making an utter fool of himself in front of a half-a-dozen-or so witnesses wired up on their morning caffeine!

Elementary, dear Watson.

Moreover, if the "temporary registration" posted in plain view on the windshield (legally-required by the DMV) was not enough to jar his grey matter - perchance - a stroll to the rear of the vehicle and a subsequent visual check for a dealer's plate on the bumper (lo & behold) may have brought his exhausting full-scale investigation of the "Case of the Missing Plate" to a swift and logical conclusion.

Unfortunately, the little fascist pig was such a lazy son-of-a-gun - quick to point an accusing finger - that his shortcomings (speaking of which - I trust for his sake - that his di** is bigger than his brain) got the best of him.

When my friend casually informed him about the recent purchase of the vehicle, and noted there was a dealer's plate attached at the rear end, it was evident from the way his jaw dropped and his eyes glazed over, that he was painfully aware that he overeached legally - and subsequently - screwed up.

The overzealous little bastard stepped in doo-doo big time!

Yup!

"There are none so blind as those who will not see."

Werner Herzog...to sign "Conquest" offering @ Book Soup! Saturday August 1st...

If you ever catch wind of a Q & A session slated to be paired with a screening of a film by respected director - Werner Herzog - jump at the golden opportunity to rub shoulders - and interact, if possible - with the visionary filmmaker.

A few months ago, die-hard fans (myself included) were treated to a delightful evening of off-the-cuff musings on the making of a recent project starring quirky Nicholas Cage (Bad Lieutenant) - for example - at the ever-popular New Beverly Cinema (West Hollywood).

After his documentary - "Encounters at the end of the World" - screened to a wildly enthusiastic audience that memorable night, the intelligent articulate auteur was inclined to offer up a handful of filmmaking tips to aspiring young directors, too.

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2008/09/werner-herzogattends-screening-of.html

The generous outgoing Herzog is slated to appear at Book Soup (8818 W. Sunset Blvd) on Saturday August 1st (@ 5 p.m.) to sign his heartfelt (no doubt greatly amusing) recollections of his topsy-turvy (at times hand-wrenching) filmmaking experience on the set of the landmark project "Fitzcarraldo".

Titled - "Conquest of the Useless Recollections From the Making of "Fitzcarraldo" - the entertaining page-turner puts the spotlight on - among other things - Herzog's forced (unpleasant?) creative partnership with volatile actor Klaus Kinski (who replaced Jason Robards last-minute when an illness felled the award-winning actor unexpectedly) during the course of the troublesome shoot.

Known primarily as an Academy award-winning Film Director(German) associated with the renowned German New Wave "movement", Hertzog's celluloid musings generally tend to focus an insightful (often searing) lens on the impassionated psyche of his subjects - adventurers, heroes, hapless stalwarts fighting against the odds - you name it.

In respect to the "Fitzcarraldo" controversy - and Herzog's unique ubiquitous cinematic style that daily impacts the cult classic scene - Wikipedia astutely noted in their biography on the respected director as follows:

"Herzog's films have received considerable critical acclaim and achieved popularity on the art house circuit. They have also been the subject of controversy in regard to their themes and messages, especially the circumstances surrounding their creation. A notable example is Fitzcarraldo,in which the obsessiveness of the central character was mirrored by the director during the making of the film, as shown in Burden of Dreams, a documentary filmed during the making of Fitzcarraldo. His treatment of subjects has been characterized as Wagnerian in its scope, as Fitzcarraldo and his later film Invincible (2001) are directly inspired by opera, or operatic themes."

"He is proud of never using storyboards and often improvising large parts of the script, as he explains on the commentary track to Aguirre, The Wrath of God."

A charming storyteller - and an equally warm, outgoing and engaging human being - the evening at Book Soup (no doubt) promises to be a glowing tribute to his craft and a stand-out must-see event worth attending.

See 'ya there, duckies!

Justin Timberlake...to rustle up dollars with scents! "Play Intense" seductive Givenchy tribute to star...

Trusting that their instincts about the seductive allure of Justin Timberlake are right on, Givenchy signed the pop sensation to tout two scents under their prestigious perfumery label.

"We were looking for a man who's recognized all over the world, someone new to the world of perfumery, and with great seductive potential," noted Pamela Baxter, the President and CEO of LVMH Perfumes (who also wears a second hat as President & CEO of Christian Dior, Inc.).

More succinctly, she gushed:

"Most importantly we needed to find a man who could embody the modern elegance specific to the Givenchy brand as well as all the facets of "Play".

"Play" and "Play Intense" (foreplay & "in like Flynn"?) have all the overtones of an erotic sexual adventure - with a little bit of kink tossed in - if you ask moi.

To think I've been splashing down with a cheap cologne on a rustic woodsy end of the spectrum.

But, I was on the right smell track, though.

According to Alain Lorenzo, wood (preferably a stiff one!) is the key.

"We told the perfumers to take the Caribbean amyris wood note and make one scent, which is more polarizing (!) and one which is more accessible ("in like Flynn", told 'ya so), " he noted matter-of-fact without batting-an-eye or smirking just once.

At least Americans were spared the humiliation of being guinea pigs when the "play intense" perfume experiment revved up.

"Because the U.S. is one of our largest markets , we wanted to work out any kinks in "Play" before bringing it to the U.S."

Well, Givenchy can start with Timberlake's hair, if they're truly sincere about snatching up any potential problems by the short-and-curlies come fall when the splashy advertising campaign (shot by Tom Munro) will break into September magazines around the country.

"Play" will land in select retail outlets wrapped-to-perfection in aestheticaly-pleasing white outer-foil, while "Play Intense" will make a seductive entrance in black (symbolic of the dark side of man's nature, get it?) .

Since "Play Intense" sold twenty percent above plan in the U.K., Givenchy is expecting the much-anticipated scent to sky-rocket on these shores when it hits the shelves at retail outlets such as Macy's, Nordstrom's, Dillard's, and Sephora when autumn leaves fall.

Executives were sly when it came to predicting sales, but hinted that industry analysts in-the-know have been forecasting $15 million in sales over the counter the 1st year.

That's a lot of nose candy, eh?

Heck, I'm in the wrong business.

Tell 'ya a funny story.

I was in an elevator one day, when a classy well-heeled woman turned in my direction, and quizzed me about the cologne I was wearing.

"Obsession?" she slyly winked.

Gosh, it hit me like a lightning bolt.

I didn't spritz on anything that day before I dashed out the door for an intense (there's that word again) work-out at the gym.

"Eau de Julian," I quickly reslponded, with barely a straight face.

Heck, I could bottle my body scent, and a make a bloody fortune on eBay.

Folks, ready for some foreplay - or should we just go for the main course - straight away?

Givenchy, watch your sexy back!

GQ...bows to great wall of China! Conde Nast to spread fashion wings...

Chinese fashion-savvy dudes ready to turn the page for GQ?

Where bejewelled greats once strode the Wall of China under a golden sun in exquisite embroidered silks steeped in exotic perfumes, high priests from the jungles of Fashion Avenue in NYC now dare to tread without foreboding.

Conde Nast whirling style dervishes caught unsuspecting big apple fashionistas by surprise recently when they announced with little fanfare that GQ - the trend-setting style bible of 7th Avenue - intends to spread their wings and venture into the far East and set up shop.

Jonathan Newhouse - the Chairman for the publisher - noted that the slick glossy mag will commence with its first issue in October (2009).

Their exciting new entry onto foreign soil was struck by virtue of a delicious copyright cooperation agreement with the all-powerful China News Service.

"GQ is a flagship title for Conde Nast. We believe the magazine will be a success in the Chinese market," a spokesperson for the Executive Board excitedly gushed to media hounds at a press conference in NYC.

Some tongues are panting, understandably!

The Menswear market appears to be ripe for the picking, fer sure.

For instance, visionary Conde Nast astutely took stock of the landscape before green-lighting the foreign arm, and the figures were staggering.

For starters, the Chinese population peaks right now at 1.3 billion.

Notwithstanding, the abundance of male-only children born after the country implemented its family planning policies of the seventies, underscores the potential for big dollar returns (profit) for the savvy fashion mavens at GQ headquarters.

"The wealthier city-dwelling young men are often referred to by the market research firms as "Little Emperors" with a voracious appetite for luxury goods and designer brands," analysts in the field advised on the heels of the Conde Nast announcement.

But, some pooh-pooh GQ (a late-comer?) for not being ballsier sooner.

Vogue, Self, and Modern Bride entered the Chinese market with confidence moons ago.

In retrospect, GQ executives were inclined to lurk on the sidelines and allow the competition to "test the waters" first.

Now, they're hungry for a slice of the style pie.

Will Conde Nast power-brokers want that plain, heated, or with a dollop of rich cream and maraschino cherry on top?

News at 11!

Sharon Tate...macabre tribute to Charles Manson victim! Icon Exhibit August 8th...

Bizarre, yes!

In good taste?

You decide!

On August 8th, there will be an opening of a multi-media Art & Fashion tribute to celebrated beauty Sharon Tate (titled "ICON") at High Profile Productions in Culver City.

The intriguing exhibit is being held to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the murder of the talented actress (who was married to director Roman Polanski when the shocking event took place in the Hollywood Hills at the hands of Charles Manson and his gang of demented followers).

Hosted by sister Deborah Tate (does that make it okay, somehow?), ICON will spotlight an exquisite selection of fashion flourishes by Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Ossie Clark and Thea Porter.

Artist Jeremy Corbell - inspired by the musings of the aforementioned designers - will unveil a collection of his original art pieces which include satin prints, mixed media canvases and a Polaroid installation of original photos and negatives from a previous Sharon Tate shoot.

Undoubedly, Roman Polanski - a fugitive in this country arising from rape charges - will not attend.

Barack Obama..."taking it up a**! Gates controversy inspires LA Times editorial!

I penned a postover the weekened in which I derided Obama's decision to wimp out - and essentially roll over and take it up the a** - from the Cambridge Police Department in respect to the controversy which arose last week in the wake of the foolhardy handcuffing and subsequent arrest of Professor Gates on charges of disorderly conduct.

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2009/07/barack-obamabeer-bust-politics-poorly.html

An LA TIMES editorial in the morning daily (July 28th Edition) is obviously a response to my put-down of the Prez for wimping-out!

In a nutshell, writer Jonahan Zimmerman takes the position that because the conduct of Police in other Nations is much worse than here, that Americans should look the other way in respect to wrongdoing on the part of Law Enforcement on these Democratic shores.

For starters, Zimmerman proceeds to note that Transparency International (which surveyed 70,000 people in 69 countries for its Global Corruption Barometer in 2009) reported that 24% of the respondents confessed to paying bribes to police (and/or Officials) in the past last year.

According to the eye-brow-raising expose - citizens from around the world routinely identified the police as a "force" that was the most corrupt institution in their societies - ahead of the judiciary, collection agencies (!), and so forth and so on.

However, in addition to being corrupt - taking bribes, extorting money, that sort-of-thing - police officers routinely abused or murdered civilians with impunity in other foreign countries, without exception.

An Amnesty International country-by-country report noted that the abuses included brutalities such as - assaults with truncheons (Armenia), electric shocks (Bahrain), cigarette burns (Mauritania), sexual assaults (Pakistan), and suspension by the wrist and ankles (Yemen).

Based on these statistics, the Los Angeles Times concluded that while our system is not perfect, miscarriages of justice - including police corruption and brutality - happen every day.

Does that mean we should trivialize them or sweep the nasty business under the rug and out-of harm's way?

The editorial staff did concede, however, that any reasonable person would not deny that some police officers unfairly target racial minorities, especially minority males.

Although admitting that in view of the foregoing arguments, the Gates incident amounted to a high-charged one, they took a wild leap and - in the final analysis - concluded that from an International perspective the Gates fiasco was but a mere tempest in a teapot!

"Nobody got shot or assaulted. No money changed hands . And, whatever indignities Gates might have incurred, they paled next to the abuse that so many people in other nations receive at the hands of their own police."

What a cynical misguided jaundiced view of things!

It is because shocking incidents like the Gates matter are on the rise and there is a growing trend towards corruption in the Law Enforcement sector in the U.S. that we - as a polite Society in a just civilized Nation - must be ever-vigilante to ensure that the kind of fascist Police States that prevail elsewhere around the Globe do not have the opportunity to gain a foothold here.

The Gates' controversy has sounded a warning bell.

And, for whom does it toll?

For you and me, big brother!

Pavillions...Grand opening dazzles! Queer Eye Chef appears today for wine sampling (July 26th/4-7 pm)

Wow!

Pavilions newly-renovated store in West Hollywood (under construction for the past year) opened with a big splash over the weekend!

If you recall, I penned a post a couple of days ago about the upcoming unveiling (which has been much-anticipated by residents in neighborhoods with access nearby).

What a great reader response!

To tout the grand opening, there have been a handful of chi-chi wine-tasting signings over the weekend to the delight of the locals.

A highlight event is obviously the one featuring the "Queer Eye Chef" tonight (July 26th) between the hours of 4-7 pm.

Wine turned out in the Russian River area of California is being toasted.

The "new" outlet @ Robertson and Santa Monica Boulevard is obviously the gem in Safeway's crown.

When I popped in to the grocery store this morning, Shoppers appeared to be walking on air in a dream-like state, as they gazed starry-eyed at the smorgasbord of tempting delights on display all around them in the beautifully-lit aesthetically-pleasing store.

The extensive collection of quality liquor is now housed in well-crafted mahogany showcases.

And, there is a walk-in cooler featuring chilled wines with labels that sing out from around the globe.

At the Sushi Bar, the staff were splicing and dicing and wrapping (and what-have-you) as curious lookie-loos gazed on in wonder at their precision hand skills.

A Galeto bar looked tempting, too.

In the produce section, discriminating chefs will obviously be thrilled with the wide selection of vegetables and fruits not often available around town in less-stocked grocery stores.

When I stumbled across the bakery at the back of Pavilions, I was knocked out by the wide variety of bread and rolls on display, set in a quaint homespun environment that appeals to the senses.

Although this outlet always maintained one of the best selections of fresh flowers and exotic plants in the lower mainland, the greenery has expanded none-the-less.

Judging by the response from shoppers swarming into the store this morning - and all the ooh's-and-aah's being uttered around me - Pavilions' entrance into an upper niche in the grocery realm is going to be a big success.

See 'ya there!

The premiere for Paris Hilton's documentary - "Paris, Not France" - attracted a posse of hungry paparazzi in search of prey.

The lonely vigil can be nerve-wracking, but when a celeb ripe for their searing lens trots down the red carpet, they spring into action and land the precious stills editors are pining for at press time.

Paris did not disappoint!

The sensuous beauty made a grand entrance in an elegant designer gown sparked with a tasteful piece of eye-catching jewellery or two.

The Way Capitalism Is Supposed To Function

The private sector (non corporate) has savings
The corporate sector (due to growth) has debt as it grows to hire
The government sector (from all approaches) has a surplus in good times from tax receipts, and is neutral overall, and spends to stimulate in bad times and runs a deficit.
This has been turned upside down since 1980 and Reagan. And you may chart the dow or s&p 500 but now our society looks like this:
private sector no savings, rotten credit and no improvement in income for years
government spending, on useless items such as wars, homeland security etc is enormously negative (add the SS IOU to the "official" deficit, tack on muni debt and agency and off budget and we are insovlent)
corporate balance sheets show low debt and tons of cash. This is so as they farmed out work to China, etc, and have been held unaccountable for anything. Banking sector different....debt and huge amounts of it, from OTC derivatives selling of credit derivatives gone bad with swaps adding to the nonsense. This, however, GAAP has now said does not exist (as it is a game after all) and my defaulted loan is worth 100% of value at the mark to imagination now used vs reality.
So how did we get this out of focus position, and when and how to reverse it. Nowhere does the "socialist" ideal of welfare and health care borne by the individual and not the corporation in any way mess up what should be. Savings in Germany, France, Canada, Japan etc still high even knowing they have no cracks to fall through.
How did corporate america take the cash? China one way yes, and 70% of all s&p 500 companies pay no tax another. the final crap was supply side economics applied to people.
As people are the government.
corporations can move, to Brazil to anywhere. ....and hang on to their money. But they do no spend it to hire US people, so the consumer is dead here. And they do not pay it in tax. They have been investing it (as Japan with a similar situation) away from their home. Yes, the Indian help center service has your SS number and info, and B of A sent them all your info, but not Microsoft's.
And until we regain the balance of the individual being paid more, with health and wlefare equal to other countries, and the corporations not running a joke of a bipartisan show of force (which we own and will pay on as they can all flee the country, legislator and corporation...) and have ony two not a dozen parties. ...and find the individual paid more (not the supply sider's less) and with savings and no federal or state deficits (stolen by the Ross Perot sucking sound) we are in trouble.
I see no help on the horizon nor any intelligence by the voters who can not see that tax is no different than paying more for those not able to bear (due to pre existing or any reason....health care costs or welfare) and the money is taken from them in higher costs not only there but to foster China's growth (and there by Iran's and North Korea among others) this is too screwed up by nonsense lies and misinformation to see from the normal citizens view. Lincoln was wrong, you can fool all the people all the time, and now, for once, a chance to see and act clearly and bring health and welfare to all and the scare tactics of the liars works again. And it is on the brink of failure. I am at a border with passport waiting. I will leave should nothing pass. As I will be sorry to see the USA fall I will survive.

Barack Obama...beer bust politics! Poorly chosen words...

In a few short succinct words, Barack Obama levelled a criticism at a Law Enforcement Officer earlier in the week which triggered an uproar across the Nation that is still playing out.

The furor first erupted when the Prez - rightly so - scolded a Police Officer for handcuffing and subsequently charging an Afro-American Professor for disorderly conduct at his home.

In a nutshell, Obama called the racist cop "stupid" - at which point - Police Brass went on the warpath.

In a news conference, the arrogant law enforcement low-life's complained to all within ear shot that the assessment was not only harsh, but uncalled for.

"Without a full picture of what happened, Obama should have stayed out of the picture," one angry Police Official asserted for the record.

And, when the President took a leap - and expressed his view that the incident smacked of racial profiling - the outcry was swift and severe.

Whoa Nellie.

For a moment, it appeared a lynching may be in the offing

"The supervisors and the patrol officers of the Cambridge Police Department deeply resent the implication and reject any suggestions that in this case or any other case they have allowed race to direct their activities," Sgt. Dennis O'Connor (President of the Cambridge Police Superior Officers Association) hissed.

Now, in the midst of the controversy, the Prez has backed down.

What a wimp!

Is Obama going to roll over for these pigs in Cambridge and take it up the a**?

Surely, he doesn't honestly expect for one deluded second that "beer bust" maneuvers (the Prez invited the dualing parties over to chat up the issues over a brewski) will actually win-out in the White House?
If so, he has more suds in his head that I originally thought!

Frankly, I think that Barack should turn in those "Mom Jeans" he wore when he threw the 1st pitch at a recent baseball match back east, and trade 'em in for a snazzy pair of "No Excuses".

For starters, Barack was not "off the mark" - nor did he speak improperly - when he simply called a "spade a spade."

Like or not, the Police force has - and will probably continue to engage in racial profiling - until the department is purged of rogue cops who wantonly and illegally engage in racist conduct.

In fact, when I was on holiday in Las Vegas a few months ago, I personally witnessed an arrest going down on the strip which smacked of racial profiling from the get-go.

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2009/05/las-vegasracial-profiling-continues-on.html

But, there is a bigger picture that Barack Obama and Law Enforcements Officials have to keep their eyes focused on.

"Abuse of Power" under the Color of Authority.

The near-riot in MacArthur Park last year is a perfect example.

In spite of the fact thousands of witnesses stepped forward to provide testimony to establish the truth about the shocking conduct of Officers that railed throughout that fateful day, the Police Chief continued to manipulate the facts and evidence behind-the-scenes with the ultimate aim of bolstering the image of the LAPD at the expense of the victims.

Denial! Denial! Denial!

In another shocking incident a few weeks ago, which I penned a post on, the LAPD Vice Squad engaged in conduct that was not only questionable but downright criminal in nature.

In that post I noted that a middle-aged man was falsely accused of committing a crime, unlawfully detained, handcuffed, and subjected to various humilities in front of strangers on the street.

At one point - with the deceitful aim of turning in a neat and tidy package to a superior (a police report and collar) one corrupt rookie cop intimidated the witness (a criminal offense) and tried to coerce the alleged suspect into admitting to a crime (he did commit) to avoid prosecution (of a Felony).

Post:
http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2009/07/lapdvice-squad-threatens-intimidates.html

Of course - the incidents of racial profiling, unlawful arrest, rights violations, and abuse of power under the color of authority - go on and on.

Until Police Chiefs around the country fess up, Barack Obama - in particular - should not let up.

If investigations and paper trails aren't going to get to the truth and result in charges being brought against offending Officers, then the fascist pigs must be tried in the public court of opinion - humiliated, exposed, defamed under the glare of the spotlight - if that is what it takes to turn the tide.

I say, go get 'em Tiger!

In closing, I part with a quiz.

Q: "What is a synonym for a Police Officer?"

A: A Professional Liar!

Los Angeles...mean streets rampant with thugs! Blow 'em away...

Last night at the "Emergency" room at Olympic Medical Center, a couple of young men in their mid-twenties or so escorted a friend to the facility for treatment after he was assaulted.

Allegedly, a gang of youths attending a "house party" in Brentwood, started a fiery ruckus around midnight which ended up disturbing the next-door neighbors.

When a couple of the residents turned up at the party digs with a request that the noise level be squelched a tad, one defiant teenager (about 16 or 17) proceeded to angrily shove the local resident from behind into an empty cement pool.

Unfortunately, he hit his head on the concrete and suffered a short "black-out".

On the heels of this senseless act of violence, concerned friends bundled their pal up and whisked him off to the nearest local hospital .

At this juncture, the culprits ran down the street and disappeared into the darkness.

Cowards!

I shook my head in disgust as I listened to the violent tale!

One man in the waiting room expressed his shock about what went down this way.

"In Brentwood! Can you believe it?"

About two days ago, I also crossed paths with a "victim" involved in a separate incident, which confirmed my suspicions that there is a growing hostility - leading to violence - escalating in the mean streets of Los Angeles.

For example, a Latino man around thirty years of age was apparently eating a snack at a fast-food take-out at Highland and Santa Monica Boulevard late one evening this past week, when an Afro-American man with half of a broken bottle in his hand demanded he fork over his earphones and CD player.

After complying with the request, the low-life reached over and tried to snatch up his wallet, too.
In response, the "victim" put up his arm to prevent the thief from making off with his personal effects.

At this point, the attacker slashed the humble Mexican man across the face of his hand with the jagged edge of the bottle, which resulted in a serious would which required hospitalization.

Ironically, about one hour earlier, I casually assured a New York woman that the neighborhood she had taken lodging in was pretty "safe".

In retrospect?

I was obviously wrong.

Notwithstanding, a couple of nasty confrontations I have experienced first-hand in trendy West Hollywood and Beverly Hills in recent days, have caused me to re-think the neighborhoods I venture into after-hours, the mode of travel I'll use to go back and forth, and so forth and so on.

Like Barack Obama, I normally engage in long walks, which I have found are the perfect leisure activity to collect my thoughts, piece together rough drafts for my blog, rustle up a bit of much-needed exercise, and simply catch a breath of fresh air.

So, if I have a chore to do (and time permits) I usually keep the car parked and walk around the neighborhood, instead.

In view of the outbreak of violence in the streets lately, I am rethinking that scenario.

In addition, I am seriously considering abandoning commutes on the Metro, because of a couple of incidents of late which shook me up.

Last week, for instance, I boarded a bus and ended up plunking myself down opposite a young male and his female companion.

As the bus roared along a main street through tony Beverly Hills and then beyond into West Hollywood, I started to organize my schedule for the next day.

As my stop approached, I signaled to the bus driver my intention to exit.

Just as I was nearing the rear door, the young African-American male (who originally sat across from me) suddenly appeared from the back of the bus and started to hurl wild allegations at me.

"I should beat your a** for listening to my conversation. Don't you ever do that."

I stared at him incredulous for a second, then uttered a reply.

"What are you talking about? I never did any such thing."

The truth of the matter is, I was so caught up in my own thoughts, that I didn't even notice when he stood up and moved to a seat at the back of the bus.

Even still, he continued to rant!

Then, he threatened me.

"If you get off this bus, I'm going to come after you and kick your bu**," he hissed.

Well, I'd had enough of his nonsense!

So, I boldly stepped off the bus into the street.

After I firmly planted my feet on the sidewalk, I have-turned and gave a suggestive glance his way

"Come on."

Suddenly, a ripple of fear crossed his face.

Then, he hesitated.

Uh-huh.

His menacing posturing - and in-your-face intimidation tactics - were nothing but empty bravado meant for show.

Because I called his bluff, he was at a loss to fathom how to save face in front of the busload of passengers who were now on the edge of their seats hanging onto every moment of the intense drama that was unfolding before them.

Fortunately, his girlfriend dashed forward and urged him not to pursue the issue further.

"It's not worth it," she cried out.

He shrugged, and tried to give off the impression that he was going to be generous, and "let it go" this time.

Out of the goodness of his heart?

Bullsh**.

In spite of the timely intervention by his friend - which saved his sorry black a** - it was evident when the bus lurched forward on its route once again that he didn't learn anything from the nasty encounter.

Once the bus doors were closed, and he was safely ensconced inside, he pointed an angry finger at me in a threatening manner and yelled through a crack in the door:

"I'll get you next time."

Right!

I won't hold my breath, kiddo.

Another incident last night, was the final straw, though.

I was strolling up a street in Hollywood proper, when I happened to glance up from the sidewalk for about one second to get my bearings.

As my eyes left the cement walkway, a scruffy-looking low-life happened to be in my eye line, and we ended up glancing at each other for a split-second or two by accident.

"What are you looking at?" he snarled at me.

With lightning speed, the wheels of my mind turned quickly, and a solution to the problem was offered up from the lower reaches of my psyche.

"Ignore the a**hole. Keep walking," my inner voice commanded me.

As I strode past him, he shouted at me:

"Fag!"

At this point, I was inclined to retort back.

"Sorry. I am not into ugly-looking men like you."

But, common sense prevailed, and I simply moved on.

Gandhi would have been proud.

During moments like these, themes in vigilante movies like those that recently featured Jody Foster in the lead role - or morality tales Charles Bronson starred in a couple of decades ago which touted taking the law into your hands - seem to make a lot of sense.

Yup!

The next time some piece of ghetto sh** strides up and insults you?

Solve the problem pronto.

Pull out a gun and blow him away.

Society will thank you for it, just betcha.

Mysteries of the Heart...a love poem!

Between the bows of social grace

I gaze in quiet wonder

as a chorus of elusive emotions

subtly rise and fall
beneath the surface
of
flawless alabaster skin
And, breathe life into a loveless crystal face

Then, in one fleeting moment
Speaks volumes
About the mysteries of the heart
before vanishing into the ether
without trace
or regret

Paris Hilton (Premiere Video)...Paris aloof with photogs! Parents beam next to her!

In this video - which was shot on the red carpet tonight - Paris appeared to be a bit shy when she posed with her parents in front of the Majestic Theatre (Westwood).

In contrast, whenever the charismatic actress drifted in my direction, she was outgoing and at ease.

Why?

Maybe it's because one or two of the photographers rudely barked out orders and treated the young heiress like a "Show Horse" to be led around by the nose.

Contrary To Current Thinking

I charted the highs and lows on the DJIA from 1900 up until today. With or without log paper, it looks extremely dangerous. Technically, a good case (should the market halt between here and 10000 and turn back down (looking REALLY long term here) it would appear a case could be made for ending up between 2000 and 3500. Fundamentally I could see this happening IF HEALTH CARE IS NOT PASSED. I believe if done properly, it would make us competitive again with all those who have health care (public) and without it we can not compete, the costs borne by coporations now as an effective tax increasing dramatically each year, and worse, if corporations drop their care to forcing the individual to bear the cost (and only 9% of all private health care is individual today) that weight would add further woes to the credit devastated consumer (together with the lower home prices and stock prices). And of course given only the deficits left us from Bush and prior administrations plus the social security coming deficit (rarely spoken of) taxes on both individual and corportations must rise dramatically to continue. This leaves, again, as my 1970 GDP vs 2008 GDP charts show a further loss of growth vs the rest of the world and would devastate our economy over the next 10 years. So 3500 on the dow or less hardly impossible. Yes, I could have used a better indicator. I was lazy. The reason being I continue to believe sell all that is US. The dollar, stocks, bonds, notes and buy only money market funds (yes low rates today, going much higher soon) and move the bulk of money to South America, esp. Brazil and Chile Mexico, Argentina...etc and Canada. While Asia is where it is popping, the fallout of Iran, North Korea and China with China's unfair trade policies make me nervous about soverign risk. Also with India (though would take a small shot there) vs the Pakistan problems.
And the curve should steepen here from 2 yr out. But would avoid messing with anything shorter should the dollar fall off a cliff. Hence my reason for liking money markets.....as the Treasury and Fed (if the SDR's are demanded) would certainly have to raise short term rates big time (a la Volcker)to protect its value and sell the debt.

Mercedes Benz...luxury auto flawed!

Every day you learn something new!

This morning, a friend of mine needed a jump-start after leaving his parking lights on all night, and running his battery down.

Sounds a lot like his personal life!

After dragging out the cables, and lifting up the hood so it could be seen in plain view by motorists driving by, he innocently batted his eyes as he prayed inside that a good Samaritan would careen to a halt and lend a helping hand.

"Do you always depend on the kindness of strangers," I quizzed him jokingly.

"That's how I ended up tying the knot with most of my lovers!"

Yeah, I'm familiar with all the boy-toys he's hauled into the sack.

The lusty love affairs usually started off with a bang, then whimpered away a few weeks later in the dark good night!

Uh-huh.

I'm cynical when it comes to matters of the heart.

But, back to the WeHo Lothario.

After a scant few minutes, a pretty young woman (a smattering of 'em feel safe among gays) sashayed down the quiet side street with her adorable Chihuahua in tow.

When she laid her soft brown eyes on the sorry son-of-a-gun, she was quick to enter the fray.

"Everything okay?" she softly purred.

So, he started up with his tawdry tale.

The generous gal offered to jump - er - give him a boost.

So, he was in like Flynn!

Imagine that, the down-to-earth sweetie was tooling around town in a top-of-the-line spanking new 2009 Mercedes Benz.

Now, his experiences with all the old junk piles he cruised around the neighborhood over the years (that he actually called cars), would come in handy.

For starters, the good Samaritan couldn't fathom how to open the hood of the spiffy roadster!

But, fate was not with my brewskie buddy, after he popped the latch.

After scanning the engine for the location of the battery for a nano second or two, he threw up his hands in disgust.

Nada.

"I'll call the dealership and ask where the it's located," she smiled sweetly.

But, shortly after a snippet of conversation went down between her and the salesman at the lot, her mood noticeably shifted.

"Something is up. And, it doesn't sound kosher," my intuitive pal was inclined to surmise.

"A no-go?" he overheard her mutter under her breath.

As it turns out, a Mercedes - in particular, her jazzy model - does not have the capacity to jump-start another ailing auto down on its luck by the side of the road.

Nope, her Mercedes is not the - "little engine that could" - by any stretch of the imagination.

So, what is the moral of the story?

Always flag down a robust all-American car - preferably made by Ford - to ensure you get the jump-start you need when your battery needs charging up.

In closing?

As Peter Falk would say:

"Just one more thing".

Did you know when a number of school children were recently showed a peace sign in class, a large percentage of the students thought it was the logo for Mercedes Benz?

The "Status Generation".

That's what I call 'em.

And, what of the inner image, that peered out from behind a mask - that ultimately - shieled the true "Michael Jackson" from the heady (sometimes ugly) glare of the searing spotlight?

Paris Hilton...the paparazzi jockey for best shot on red carpet!

Once the celebrated heiress - Paris Hilton - strides down the red carpet, it is an immediate love affair with the press.

And, quite a sight to behold!

As the sensual beauty strikes a pose, frenzied photographers jump into action, anxious to secure a top-notch still sure to please their Editors (and, I gather, rack in a few of the big bucks).

Moi?

I stand on the sidelines amused.

Later, Ms. Hilton will gravitate towards my lens, like a moth to flame.

Natch!
