Bang Bang...wins Best 1st Feature Award @ LA Asian Pacific Film Fest!

At the dazzling closing night gala for the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival last night it was announced that the flick "BANG BANG" (directed by Byron Q) got the nod for the Best First Feature by the Jury Awards Committee..

Frankly, the news came as no surprise to me!

As soon as the flick splashed across the screen earlier in the week at the trendy CGV Theatre complex in Hollywood, it was evident to me from the get-go that Byron Q possessed a rare gift - and a lot of raw talent - sure to catapult him into dizzying heights in the film business in the not-too-distant future.

If he keeps his nose to the creative grindstone, that is!

Although the low-budget project (which focuses a searing lens on an Asian street gang) was a bit ragged around the edges now-and-then - there were moments of brilliance which ultimately saved the film from disintegrating into mediocre bill-of-fare right before the filmgoers' eyes.

Needless to say, Mr. Q won this tough movie critique over, in a heartbeat.

For starters, there was an effective use of the RED camera, which set a dynamic overall tone which lent itself well to the gritty plot unfolding on the silver screen.

The unique way the 1st-time-out director weaved classical music into the sound track also bowled me over.

Sheer genius!

The haunting strains of strings strategically weaved in at an emotional arc in the storyline - at one point - resonated so sweetly that it caused a few members of the audience to weep.

Ah, powerful filmmaking that touches, resonates - and ultimately - heals!

"I love all music. That's why I tried to use hip-hop, rock, and classical in the mix," Byron Q responded to my query in the upbeat  Q &A  a few minutes after the curtain fell down.

His locales for the shoot were very natural, too.

"I was also the location manager," he fessed up.

"I scouted down locations (in San Diego) where I could shoot for free," he chuckled.

"One of the houses featured in the film is where I stayed when I was in town working on he project Bang Bang."

Uh-huh!

When a film director has a low-budget, he or she often ends up becoming chief cook-and-bottle-washer in the grand scheme of things.

The acting throughout the street-wise drama was first rate; in fact, a couple of the new faces on screen turned in performances which may launch their film careers, I expect.

Although the subject matter has been mined in the past by more-experienced directors - here - the director manages to rise above the obvious pitfalls and potential cliches to make his own distinctive cinematic mark.

I was particularly taken with the dialogue which was well-written and believable.

Not stilted or phony, in the least bit!

When one audience member asked Byron Q how he accomplished that, he joked that the production team enlisted the aid of a sort-of "gang-speak" expert to ensure authenticity.

A bit of levity always goes a long way.

And, I expect that Byron Q will too.

Kudos!

Two PR folks on staff at the Asian Pacific Film Festival (Eseel Borasa and Abraham Ferrer) would be wise to take a cue from Byron Q when it comes to manners and effectively reaching out to filmgoers.

Their standoffish (aloof) manner tends to turn-off white folks - who can't help but feel that they are crashing the Asian Community's private party each year - whenever they attend the annual Festival in Los Angeles each year in Los Angeles.

Lighten up, eh?

Sorry, just an observation which may be worth looking into, David Magdeal (co-director).

LA Asian Pacific Film Festival...Heartthrob Leehom Wang & "Love in Disguise" gala a blow-out! BANG BANG best first feature!

The atmosphere was electrically-charged at the CGV Theatre complex on Thursday evening as excited fans of Taiwan hearthrob Leehom Wang descended on the tony envrions at 1 Wilshire in Hollywood to catch the premiere of the his new romantic comedy-feature "Love in Disguise".

As the buzz in the lobby escalated to a fever pitch, Festival Officials scrambled to put the finishes touches on the glittering closing night Gala party in the spacious courtyard below as a local DJ began to spin sizzling hot upbeat platters sure to get the crowd hopping.

The 2011 Edition of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival had been a huge success!

During the course of the week-long annual fest, excited film buffs stormed the venues and packed the houses, anxious to take in an eclectic program of flicks - short, experimental, highly original, feature-length, and documentary in style and nature.

Once the opening night kicked off with a premiere of "FAST FIV"E (which has since zoomed to a No. 1 spot at box offices around the country) there was no looking back.

Justin Lin, the director of the franchise film series - by the way - is an alumni of the LAAPFF.

One of his first celluloid offerings was unveiled at the fest about nine years ago.

As I noted in my feature on the Opening Night Celebrations, this year - according to Co-Director David Magdael - the LAAPFF was "bursting at the seams".

"In the first two days the opening and closing night galas were sold out," he beamed.

Indeed, on both occasions, I had to elbow my way through the swarms of excited ticket-holders in a bold-faced effort to snatch up a seat, and muzzle my way into the 'open bar" to secure thirst-quenching exotic cocktails on the house!

Last night, at the closing gala, thrilled upscale guests chatted each other up - as they nibbled on mouth-watering chicken wings and gobbled up delectable sweet treats that were simply divine.

Though normally a tea-totler, I jumped in with gay abandon, and tossed back a few potent drinkie-poohs.

By the end of the night, my head was swimming, and I was ready to boogie with all the other filmgoers hot-to-trot and at-the-ready to end this year's celebrated fest with a resounding BANG!

Meanwhile, earlier in the evening, the Fest Directors announced the winners of the coveted LAAPFF awards.

Fast Five...dazzling premiere at Asian Pacific Film Festival! Sung Kang & Sandra Oh hit red carpet!

Sandra Oh trots red carpet at Asian Pacific Film Fest!

Sung Kang

I'm in the Mood for Love

When Sung Kang strolled down the red carpet last night for the premiere of "Fast Five" at the Director's Guild of America, he was definitely the man of the hour!

The handsome actor who stars in the just-released "Fast Five" (the sequel to "Fast & Loose) was literally mobbed with well-wishers at the annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

When a local interviewer (Jocelyn Wang @ 8 Asians) asked Mr. Kang what film made him cry, he was quick with an answer that was a surprise.

"Pippi Longstalking," he beamed.

"That's you're only question," he wondered aloud.

Uh-huh!

When I cornered the charismatic star, he noted he was pretty much content with his career.

In response to my own question about what kind of flick he would like to sign on for in the future, he was quick on the uptake.

"A comedy," he grinned ear-to-ear.

Meanwhile, the wine flowed, the tony guests snacked on delicious finger food, and a posse of up-and-coming stars mingled and chatted each other up to a fever pitch 'til the witching hour when the curtain finally fell on the first night of the Asian Pacific Fest.

Dapper PR man - David Magdael (sporting a well-tailored dark suit with an orchid in the lapel) - excitedly noted that this year's film outing was "bursting at the seams".

"Within two days, both the opening night and closing night galas sold out."

A big draw this year turned out to be the "Fast Five" (starring Paul Walker & Vin Diesel) screening - a flick that was directed by an alumni of the festival - Justin Lin.

"Justin premiered a film nine here years ago," Magdael pointed out for the record.

"We called him up and asked if he would like to premiere "FAST FIVE". He jumped at the opportunity. He has never forgotten his roots."

Mr. Lin recently launched a Short Film Competition which has been well-received also.

The popular web site - "You Offend me You Offend my Family - was set up to launch that altruistic effort.

http://www.YOMYOMF.com
Actually, it was quite a night for the Asian Film Community.

Danny Pudi (NBC's "Community") - who acted one of the MC's at the glittering gala (alongside Parvesh Cheena of NBC's "Outsourced") - gushed that the opening night launch was just "fabulous".

"The Asian community is so together. It has been such a rewarding experience for me to attend," he excitedly blurted out as he greeted a posse of fans in the DGA lobby after the screening.

Obviously, Danny was floating on a cloud, judging by his animated presence as he courted attendees at the glittering celebration.

There was quite a stellar turn-out  - which not only sparked the night - but set the tone of glamour for the week-long event.

The arrival of Archie Kao (CSI) on the red carpet triggered screams from adoring women.

Yes, he's single, ladies!

Archie whispered in my ear that he will be featured in a big-budget feature later in the year.

Kelvin Han Yee was beaming with pride over the fact he helped raise 1.6 million dollars at a fundraiser for victims of the Japan disaster.

Mr. Yee is starring in an episode of "Hawaii 5-0" (he plays a Police Chief) which will broadcast on May 16th.

Karin Anna Cheung who I interviewed last year when she appeared in "People I've Slept With" looked stunning in a chic understated red cocktail dress.

I also spied (and said hello to) Director Quentin Lee - quite a character in his own right - who flitted among the guests quipping jokes and having a gay old time.

Randall Park - on his way to stardom - is currently appearing in "Supah Ninjahs" on cable.

When I quizzed the outgoing down-to-earth actor about future plans, he confided he was open to meatier roles.

"I would like to be the first Asian romantic leading man."

A tall order to fill, but he has what it takes - the looks, the talent, the "it" quality - to achieve that goal in my estimation.

Parvesh Cheena (who co-hosted the event's premiere) was excited about a voice-over role in an upcoming "Transformer" project.

Gillian Jacobs (NBC "Community") caused quite a stir when she posed for the paparazzi on the electric red carpet, too.

Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy)  - was fashionably late (she was the last star to trot in and dash off to catch Fast Five in the packed DGA Theatre) - but no one seemed to be miffed.

Shooting late on set, perhaps?

One of the actresses that stood out was Monique Cumen.

Ms. Curnen (Fast & Furious & The Dark Knight) was effervescent and glowed in her tasteful black cocktail dress.

Actually, it was quite the night for fashion statements all round.

Gowns ran the gamut from floor-length (and body-hugging) to short short - and more-often-than-not - were awash with pretty floral motifs or dazzling mood-uplifting pastels.

The men - a few Asian males actually sported orange "do's" (which jelled well with their trendy hip street-wear) - were sharply turned-out, too.

Some wore black dress slacks or jeans, teamed with ubiquitous t's etched with a smattering of designer logos and off-beat stylish etched prints on their face.

Fedoras and Berets added a European flair to the aura of the night's festivities.

I also was blessed with the opportunity to meet up-and-coming talent which is always a plus for me.

The Director of  - "I'm in the Mood for Love"  (who was in attendance last night) - chatted me up.

Jason Karman's short film - a gay love story - screens on Monday May 2nd at the Festival.

The young actor playing one of the leads is certainly "on the rise" in respect to his eventful career.

Kyle Toy has a charismatic appeal that is sure to take him far in the biz!

A synopsis of the film?

A singing telegram worker meets his ex-boyfriend while having hot pot and learns to embrace his new found bachelorhood through popular song

Catch it if you can, especially in view of the fact it is slated to screen in Toronto in the near future, and has also garnered several awards that single it out as quality film that deserves a following!

By the way, what a blast last night's premiere proved to be!

The Disc Jockey spun danceable upbeat tunes that rocked from the get-go.

I ecstatically blurted out to Mr. Magdael that he really outdid himself this year!

Indeed, tony guests packed the local venue - and lit up the prestigious home for the local chapter of the Director's Guild - as the "faces" of legendary stars peered down from the walls (such as Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Jack Lemmon, Orson Welles, to name-a-few).

Well-heeled waiters in elegant uniforms floated through the crowd offering up a glut of treats - such as delectable chocolate sweets- yummy cream-filled-cake, delicious finger food, and exotic cocktails provided by a host of sponsors (KeKel Vodka, for one).

In particular, a handful of merchants sprinkled around the charged keyed-up foyer, satiated any-and-all pangs of hunger by virtue of mouth-watering offerings that were gulped down in one full swoop.

Hot Stuff Cafe's finger foods were sensational (to say the least).

"The Candy Chef" was on hand to treat the film fans with hard candy, delightful Asian sweets, and chewy snacks that really hit the spot.

I was asked to inform folks that their specialty is Candy Arrangements.

Check them out!

http://www.TheCandyChef.com

I also got hooked on a coconut ball (on a stick) which was - well - just yummy.

Kudos to THE SWEETER THINGS

http://www.TSTCHOCOLAT.com
I didn't even wake up with a hang-over this morning - in spite of the fact I also caught the Royal Wedding - and did not tuck in until I actually heard a rooster crow in Hollywood at about 5 a.m. (

No kidding, folks!

Tonight, I expect to trot down to the DGA to catch The Wedding Palace (feature) and Saigon Electric.

See 'ya there!

LA Asian Pacific Film Festival...award-winning THE LULU SESSIONS premieres!

Film buffs are buzzing about - THE LULU SESSIONS - which is slated to premiere at the DGA under the auspices of the Asian Pacific Film Festival in Los Angeles on April 30th.

The film by S. Casper Wong has been nominated for a Grand Jury Award.

THE LULU SESSIONS is a raw and deeply personal documentary with a larger-than-life protagonist. It wrestles with everyone’s biggest fear about how to face the end of life," the filmmaker's handlers noted in a press release this past week.

In a nutshell, the insightful filmmaker focuse his lens on LuLu (Louise ), a potty-mouthed chain-smoking no-holds barred researcher, who is forced to grapple with the meaning of life when breast cancer strikes.

Mr. Wong documents Lulu's last fifteen months alive - and an adventure that rattles her assumptions - values and self-image (even tests the limits of the bond between LuLu and the filmmaker who happens to be her best friend).

THE LULU SESSIONS is a film that offers us insight not only into a deeply connected relationship - but the beginning of an intimacy between two women that outgrows our understanding of friendship and partnership – and maybe even life.

"Dying becomes a process of shedding long-held but stale presumptions, obligations and relationships and forging new ones."

In essence, Th Lulu Sessions is a powerful stark testimonial about our capacity for love, friendship, forgiveness - and life itself - in the face of impending mortality. It prods us to wonder what our own final adventure will look like. And with whom will we be sharing this last ride.

S. Casper Wong is no stranger to the film industry.

Her "Shirts & Skins", a narrative short, was broadcast nationally by the Independent Film Channel and is in the Tribeca Film Institute’s curated Reframe Collection.

"OO 1", a narrative feature screenplay, received the Alfred P. Sloan Foundations Grant for Screenwriting and Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay at Urbanworld Film Festival (and was awarded screenwriting grants).

Wong is currently working on "Staying Well" - a feature documentary and television mini-series in collaboration with UCLA about integrative East-West medicine - and "Becoming" (a longitudinal documentary chronicling Chinese adoptees growing up in American families).

See 'ya at the Los Angeles premiere!

Fast Five to premiere @ Asian Pacific Festival!

One of the classiest cutting-edge film presentations in the country - the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival - kicks off  at the end of the month at the Directors Guild of America on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood (CA) April 28th – May 7th.

PR Rep - David Magdael - excitedly informed me over the weekend that this years's offerings will feature World Premieres, Sneak Previews, a James Wong Howe Retrospective, a C3 Digital Conference, thought-provoking Documentaries, and Narratives focusing on the voices of Asian Americans and Asian Peoples from around the globe.

For instance, JUSTIN LIN’s Newest Action-Thriller  - "FAST FIVE” (starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang and Dwayne Johnson - premieres on opening night at the ten-day festival.

“LOVE IN DISGUISE” - directed by Mando-Pop Star Leehom Wang (who also stars opposite respected actress Joan Chen) will premiere at the lavish closing night Gala.

In addition to the Director's Guild - other venues include - Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theatres and the CGV Cinemas (situated in culturally-rich Koreatown in downtown Los Angeles).

The prestigeous LAAPFF is also slated to launch the Asian Pacific Heritage Month  Festival which unveils and celebrates 180 films from both Asian Pacific American and Asian International Directors from over 20 countries.

“We are excited and proud to present the Los Angeles premiere of FAST FIVE as our Opening Night film,” enthused David Magdael (Film Festival Co-Director).

“Justin has been a part of our festival family since he was making short films back in his UCLA days. We remember when we premiered "BETTER LUCK TOMORROW" nine historic years ago and now to have his newest Hollywood action-thriller open the Fest is only fitting."

"Under Justin’s helm, 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise continues to make film history, as he continues to create some of the most ethnically diverse Hollywood blockbusters. This night will be a celebration of Justin as one of our directors who continues to excel through the industry and one who remains a true inspiration for our aspiring filmmakers.”

Lin and fellow bloggers from the web site - “You Offend Me You Offend My Family” - launched a film initiative (2010) to support aspiring Asian American filmmakers entitled “Interpretations".

“You Offend Me You Offend My Family” is the Fest's opening night community presenter.

INFO:

www.YOMYOMF.COM

Targeting the burgeoning online community of API filmmakers, “Interpretations” was designed to encourage and support this emerging talent pool, and give these artists a chance to share their unique perspectives and have their work seen by industry experts.

The response was phenomenal.

In fact, hundreds of films were submitted for consideration, of which - a handful were selected - for screening.

For opening night -YOMYOMF.com - will screen the premiere of “CAR TALK 2” (on a double-bill with FAST FIVE) which is a short film starring Sung Kang and R & B singing sensation Tyrese.

Danny Pudi, star of the hit NBC TV comedy - COMMUNITY - will host the opening night gala after the screenings.

Another LAAPFF alum -  filmmaker Bertha Bay-Sa Pan (FACE) - offers up her latest hit romantic comedy (ALMOST PERFECT) as a Centerpiece Presentation (Saturday April 30 at the DGA).

Director Pan-and her cast - Kelly Hu, Ivan Shaw, Edison Chen, Christina Chang and Kristy Wu - are expected to be in tow (schedules permitting).

“Bertha Bay-Sa Pan is a great example of the auteur who can write and direct and tell meaningful stories,” according to Abraham Ferrer, Festival Co-director.

“Her first feature - FACE - had its Los Angeles premiere with us after her Sundance breakthrough in 2002. She has since gone on to direct, write and produce features and at the same time establish her own production shingle – Slew Pictures," Ferrer noted fo the record.

"As our centerpiece film, we celebrate Bertha’s vision and her amazing talent.”

The Festival turns a spotlight on filmmakers - Wesley Chan, Ted Fu and Philip Wang (aka Wong Fu Productions) - and their own curated festival program.

WONG FU PRESENTS FAST FORWARD on Saturday April 30 at the DGA.

These filmmakers have been making viral videos since 2003 before You Tube existed.

Through the constant embracing of new methods of creating and distributing their work, these innovative artists have created their own path outside Hollywood's traditional means.

Earlier this year, I caught the screening of the "Taqwacores" at  the Asian Pacific Film Festival.

There was such a buzz about the film, that the artistic director was unable to accommodate all the fillm buffs who turned out at the Director's Guild to catch it.

The visually-stunning flick sold out!

Readers at the Tattler may recall the glowing movie review it received at this site.

Asian Pacific Film Festival...ends on sour note! Asian actors put down Industry! Volunteers rude to press! Magdael ignores guests...

Justin Chon slams casting office!

Asian Actors scoffed at the Industry's perception of their community at a panel discussion, volunteers were rude to the press, and PR rep David Magdael snubbed invited guests.

For obvious reason, the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival came to a close on a sour note!

The expectations were high during the week - when ticket sales soared, upscale guests toasted each other at glittering parties, and a handful of glowing press clips boosted the status of the 26th annual event which kicked off  at the DGA in Hollywood on April 29th.

Over the past couple of years - and at a panel dicussion today - Asian actors and filmmakers belly-ached that the mainstream Hollywood dream factory didn't  take them seriously (which I found ironic).

In spite of the fact individuals like myself in the press have attempted to put a spotlight on the festival - with the ultimate aim of lending some credibility and relevance to their annual event - the Asian community has continued to remain insulated.

In fact, at a couple of the Q & A sessions, a handful of Asian organizers persisted with their theory that in the Asian community - unlike in others - there was only one degree of separation.

On this bold assumption, they took a leap, and asserted that their ties were closer-knit with their own kind than those of other races.

Subsequently, attitude reared its ugly head!

Indeed, when white folks - or members of other races attended the Festival events - they were often treated like "outsiders".

In a nutshell, the Asian Community has brought its woes upon itself.

Slaps at the mainstream Industry today - that Asian artists struggle so desperately to be a part of - didn't help matters much.

One actor snidely remarked to a full house at the Independent Theatre - that before auditions - Actors had to practice their Asian accents in order to land the job.

Ouch!

Another young Hollywood hopeful - who boasted a role in Twilight (Justin Chon) - accused the Jackass casting directors of shutting Asians out.

"I was willing to take even a small part in the film, but they told me they were going all white," he lamented in so many words.

From where I stood, the wild notion appeared preposterous, on its face alone.

In the past I have not only been a casting director, but a theatrical agent, too.

I've never witnessed that kind of alleged discrimination ever.

Type-casting - on the other hand - yes!

One naive dancer claimed that when she attended an audition, each race - African-American, Asian, Latino - was separated into groups.

Then, a candidate or two was selected from each.

I've been in the business for over thirty years, and attended hundreds of auditions, and I have never encountered that kind of casting process based on race.

Sounded like a tall tale to me.

Drama Queen!

When she quipped a moment later - that she felt like a piece of meat - it was obvious to me the gal was an inexperienced wannabee totally clueless about the nature of the beast.

Alfred Hitchcock said it best:

"Actors are just cattle."

Move along, little doggie.

One member of the Press stepped out of a movie line for one second to snatch up a treat, and ended up being rudely pulled out of his spot when he returned a second later, because a stupid ill-mannered volunteer wasn't paying attention.

Anyone can make a silly mistake, but it was the way the inexperienced loser handled the matter, which was outrageous.

Did he apologize?

No, of course not.

A organizer at an event should treat each individual with dignity and respect.

For a Festival that claims to be sophisticated and classy, the Asian Pacific stooped to an all-time low!

On Thursday night, David Magdael (normally congenial) snubbed red carpet attendees.

This afternoon, he ignored invited guests, too.

Guess he figured he made it through the gate and there was no need to hold up the plastic mask with the sardonicus smile to the thronging festival-goers any longer.

Wrong!

The words to a Beatle's song ring out loud and clear:

"I'm looking through you, where did you go?"

Director Ang Lee managed to crack U.S. market!

The Taqwacores nabs Jury Prize...Bodyguards & Assassins red carpet premiere sizzles...

Taqwacores nabs Grand Jury Prize!

At the closing gala for the 26th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival last night, attendees roared their approval when it was announced that "The Taqwacores" - a film about Punk Muslims - won the coveted Grand Jury prize.

I penned a review of the compelling narrative earlier this week which won multiple awards.

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2010/05/taqwacorespunk-muslims-depicted-in.html

In addition to the Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding Fiction Film, the rivetting feature nabbed honors for Best Director, Best Acting for an "Ensemble Cast" and the "Audience Award" for Favorite Film.

Bobby Naderi (the star of the film) and director Eyad Zahra trotted the red carpet at a star-studded premiere of Teddy Chan's - "Bodyguards and Assassins" - just shortly after they received the exiting  news.

Needless to say, both were ecstatic.

In a day or so, video footage of a couple of their impromptu interviews with the paparazzi on the red carpet will be posted on my YouTube web site.

For those of you who missed "The Taqwacores" first-time out (the premiere screening sold out and disappointed filmgoers were turned away) there will be an opportunity to catch the award-winning flick this week-end at the Downtown Independent Theatre (a festival venue).

In fact, the orgaizers extended the festival two days (to May 8th), so that film buffs have the opportunity to take in the films that won coveted prizes at this year's 26th Annual event.

Screening dates and times are posted on the Festival's website.

http://asianfilmfestla.org/2010/films-events/schedule/

Best Screenplay Award went to Writer/Director Raul Jocson for SF STORIES.

Daniel Park received the Best First Feature Award for his webisode - KTOWN COWBOYS - which was a poplular favorite with fans @ the  festival and sold out long before the screening date.

In the documentary Jury competition - LAST TRAIN HOME (Director Lixin Fan) - received two awards which included the Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding Documentary Feature and one for Best Cinematography.

Documentarian Deann Borshay Liem won The Festival's "Best Director Award" for her personal film titled "IN THE MATTER OF CHA JUNG HEE".

The editor - VIVIEN HILLGROVE - received the Best Editing honors for the same doc.

S. Leo Chiang’s film - A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES - received the CALL TO ACTION prize and the "Audience Award" for Favorite Documentary

136 shorts were screened at the festival this year (2010).

I'll be posting reviews on a handful of the best shorts offered up.

Keep you eye out!

In the past, organizers have noted that oftentimes it is a short-film entry at the Festival that springboards an artist into the feature-length film arena.

BICYCLE (Dean Yamada) was the recipient of the Golden Reel Award.

TELEVISNU (directed by Prithi Gowda) snatched up  the Linda Mabalot New Directors/New Visions Award.

The gala attracted a throng of excited filmgoers, who initially flocked in to catch the much-anticipated premiere of  "Bodyguards & Assassins" (a review to follow) - then later - stayed on to sip exotic cocktails and nibble on scrumptious finger food at the high-profile after-party under a breathtaking night-sky in picturesque Japan Town until the witching hour.

If  'ya missed the glittering soiree, there's always next year, eh?

See 'ya at the Festival this week-end.

Best bets?

Toyota Presents Cinema Musica...Videos rev up packed Independent Theatre! Asian Pacific Film Festival...

Downtown, admidst a cultural landscape that has emerged in a tony environ in the inner city of Los Angeles, Toyota (a sponsor of the Asian Paciflic Film Festival) launched a night of festive entertainment for Festival attendees with a big focus on up-and-coming talent and the Music Video industry.

The Independent Theatre, a mainstay venue for the annual event, was not begging for ticket sales.

An hour or so before the doors were to slated to swing open, music enthusiasts were braving a crush of ticket-holders in the street, with the hope of nabbing a plush seat at the much-anticipated presentation.

I have to admit, this years roster of videos were a little more traditional (in a basic two-minute format rife with a smorgasbord of slick visuals designed to bolster up the potential pop hits being promoted).

Unforunately, most of the  videos, were run-of-the-mill.

Kids, get with it!

Lead singers hip-hopping in the mean city streets, mugging into camera - and a lot of superficial attitude - does't cut it anymore in the competitive world of pop stardom!

A large   percentage of clips that flew across the wide screen were hum-drum, mediocre, boring!

With the exception of "Valentine" and the "11th Dimension".

Actually, I happened to be standing in line next to the director of the "Valentine" piece, so I snatched up the opportunity to pick his brains a tad.

In his novel video, frames of a cartoon were affixed to DVD cases, and set on a warehouse floor in a domino-style mode (with a pop singer strumming her guitar in the background).

When the frames started to fall - a cartoon was ceremoniously set into motion - at which point the audience was transfixed by romantic images of a lovestruck dude crafting a heart and presenting it to the object of his desire.

Enchanting!

Ross Ching noted that he landed the project after he published a video sample of his work on YouTube.

During a Q & A - getting the artists to chat about their work and the creative process - was like pulling teeth.

When I asked the group what their influences were - the response was pretty much - huh?

Mr. Ching came back with - what was the question?

The young talent appeared to be better at fathoming up their visions, than discussing the creative process behind it.

I re-phrased the question.

"What motivates you?"

That did the trick.

Suddenly, the young filmmakers were babbling at the mouth.

"The fact that music is a Universal language. It is a medium I can work in that touches everyone," one sincere young man uttered up quite eloquently.

Another chimed up that it was the collaborative effort in video-making that inspired him.

In another instant case, a video artist's asserted that his ideas were altruistic and flowed from endeavours with community appeal.

At least one humanitarian in the crowd, eh?

Mr. Ching had no qualms about discussing his prime motivation first and foremost.

"The money!"

The rapt audience roared in approval.

The entertaining evening was topped off with a night-cap on the roof of the Independent Theatre with a sweeping breathtaking view of the Los Angeles.

By the way, at the end of the week, film buffs may want to catch two foreign films that are creating a lot of buzz at the Asian Pacific Film Festival this year.

See 'ya there!

The People I've Slept With...Archie Kao stars in gay-themed comedy! Raunchy sex & underlying potent message...

Throngs of excited fans of the comedy genre braved a long queue on Saturday afternoon that snaked out the front door of the DGA (and beyond) to the curb at the old Virgin Records headquarters.

Light-hearted director, Quentin Lee, was screening his much-anticipated quirky sex romp, aptly titled:  "The People I've Slept With".

To bide the time, strangers actually chatted each other up on the street, as they kept their eye on the front door and continued to  check their watches in frustation.

A joke I offered up triggered a guffaw or two.

"Gosh," I chuckled, "If they were going to do a bio of my sex life, it would have to be a mini-series!"

The response was encouraging for a struggling stand-up comic.

A rarity in the mean streets of LA LA LAND.

Once inside, and comfortably ensconced in our plush seats, the campy hi-jinks commenced.

For instance, filmgoers were asked to locate the number on their seats, so they could determine if they were the big prize-winners for an impromptu raffle which featured sex toys and party favors from Pleasure Chest.

A posse of folks then proceeded to dash up to the mic - to promote an upcoming event or fundraising gala - which stretched the wait to epic proportions.

I guess we were all in for the long haul, like it or not!

Finally, the lights were extinguished and the bemused audience was suddenly face-to-face - "this-close" -  with a pretty young lady talking into camera.

From the gist of the dialogue, it became evident that the character was pregnant, and had come up with the novel idea of capturing some thoughts on video to share with her young one upon coming of age.

Within minutes - the audience was  treated to a bird's eye view of a smattering of provocative (and on occasion) risque raunchy sexual encounters - as the mother recalled  the careless behaviour that led to her dilemma (pregnancy out of wedlock).

At this point, the plot twists moved along quickly, as the main characters sauntered into the landcape.

Right-off-the-bat, Mr. Lee struck  a chord with his rapt audience,  and managed  to tickle their funny bone along the way.

The witty - at times insightful - quips triggered gales of laughter from the filmgoers throughout the course of the film, in fact.

There's never a dull moment in this low-budget, well-crafted,  gay-themed flick.

Uh-huh.

Cheung's best bud is a foot-loose and fancy-free - hot-to-trot - "out" gay male.

"The People I've Slept With" amounts to a porn cable version of the popular TV sitcom - "Will &  Grace".

Indeed!

On the red carpet Mr. Lee proudly beamed that the titillating film is slated to broadcast on Logo in the near future.

In spite of Mr. Lee's preoccupation with - "sex" "sex" "sex" - beneath the sensuous flesh of this slick celluloid offering lies a potent message.

When it comes to a commitment in a relationship, honesty is the key to laying a strong foundation for any loving couple.

Like most big-budget Hollywood romantic sex comedies, there is a happy ending, too.

As we have learned in recent months from the ongoing Federal court case dragging on in San Francisco - gays - like most  normal warm-blooded individuals - pine to ride off into the romantic sunset with Prince Charming.

Thumbs up for entertaining bill-of-fare with an R rating.

The Clash...a thrill a second! Action-thriller must-see for Martial Arts fans...

Normally, I am not inclined to snap up a ticket for a Martial Arts Film, especially not one with English subtitles that requires that I manipulate my motor skills at break-neck speed to ensure I don't miss any juicy detail.

The Buzz on "The Clash" was so persistent, though, that I actually hung out in line with all the regular folks to catch the flick.

The foreign film did not disappoint!

Within minutes, the intense action-thriller revved into high gear, hauling the captive audience along for a delicious heart-pounding wild ride.

The Martial Arts Masters didn't hold back - in fact - on one occasion the fight scenes were so realistic and gut-wrenching that filmgoers cried out unexpectedly in the dark below the footlights.

Ugh!

Movie buffs found it difficult to suppress their emotions (and raw responses) as the lead characters also chewed their way through a a dozen-or-two henchmen in about two seconds flat (in the eye-popping opening scenes) and spat 'em out without ruffling their chic designer threads.

When a bit of witty unexpected off-the-wall dialgoue interspersed with the high drama - the ambitious "Clash" - soared into Classic Film heaven.

Unlike some U.S. action-adventure features, the actors were able to keep the ticket-holders on the edge of their plush seats with - mind-boggling thrilling jabs, kicks, head-butts, and lethal spins - which were jarringly realistic.

The gang-leader (with the unlikely name of Phoenix) captivated fans with her strident, dangerous, sensual persona.

The male stud who played opposite her, turned in a remarkably gritty performance, that is bound to nab him International stature and rustle up a roster of film projects to keep his lithe powerful bod in action for a decade or so.

The soundtrack was phenomenal!

Frankly, I was so mesmerized, I didn't want the film to end!

I'll be there for the sequel, 'fer sure.

Now, if they could only sign on Angelina Jolie, to make way for a naughty Martial Arts three-way!

Kinky, I know!

The Taqwacores...punk Muslims depicted in powerful potent film! Asian Pacific Film Festival...

The Artistic Director at the Asian Pacific Film Festival - Abe Ferrer - noted to me in passing at the DGA yesterday that it was a frustrating experience manning  the door of the screening rooms during the week-long event.

“I had to turn forty-or-fifty people away last night because Taqwacores was sold out.”

Uh-huh!

I was one of the lucky filmgoers to get inside the door and catch the flick at a special screening.

When "The Taqwacores" lands distribution it’s going to do quite well at the Box Office at Art Film Houses around the country.

Earlier in the afternoon, I interviewed the director - Eyad Zahra - and two of the lead actors in the thought-provoking well-crafted narrative.

Taqwacores was lovingly adapted from the popular novel by the same name.

The lead character - Jusef - is an engineering student who takes up residency in Buffalo with a circle of Muslim punks.

Say what?

I know.

"Muslim Punk" seems like an oxymoron, or an incongruity of terms, eh?

Festival organizers describe the project with the tight intense script - written by talented Michael Muhammad Knight - as an up-close peek at young Muslims trying to come to grips with the complexities of practicing their faith in modern-day America.

Is there an ounce of truth to their yearnings?

To me, the potent message - that hit me smack dab in the forehead with all the impact of a sharp pick axe - appeared to be that religion across-the-board is fu**ed up (or capable of severely messing with your head).

One filmgoer's observation was also bang-on.

The twenty-something dude seemed to think that the characters were sincere about finding the answers, and in the final analysis, hopeful that they would be able to practice their faith in a manner that was acceptable to their philosophies, beliefs, and lifestyle.

The feature is stunning visually - in part due to the fact - Zahra facilitated the "red" camera.

The artsy-fartsy grainey "look" they caputured on celluloid suited the subject matter masterfully.

In fact, after having screened the potent narrative, I can't image any other approach that would have worked  so compellingly.

The director chose a novel way to cast the picture, too.

After one notable casting director in Hollywood wailed that "Taqwacores" was uncastable, he went in another direction to secure his roster of talent.

Zahra plummed the Internet and rustled up his actors online.

The film was well-received at Sundance last year, and this weekend at the DGA, where the Asian Pacific Film Festival in Los Angeles was holding court.

Vancouver actor, Bobby Nadari, turned in a remarkable natural performance in a challenging role that doesn’t come down the pike too often.

I was particularly drawn to the female lead's performance, too.

In spite of the fact the lead actress - Noureen DeWulf  - was forced to cover her face throughout the entire length of the movie according to the dictates of the Muslim tradition, she managed to captivate the audience by virtue of finely-honed acting techniques which managed to reach out in spite of the encumberances.

"I wanted to at least show my eyes," she noted in the interview session at the DGA (with Director Zahara and actor Naderi in tow) courtesy of the Asian Pacific Film Festival team.

The producers humored her, but said "no".

Those spell-binding peepers speak volumes, by the way.

The pretty petite lady also has a charismatic presence that suggests the river "runs deep".

The Taqwacores will be making the rounds of film festivals around the country in the near future.

Catch it if you can.

The Taqwacores is engrossing dazzling entertainment  capable of transforming filmgoers.

Alexander...exec offended by Colin Farrel's ba**s! Asian Pacific Film Festival panel...

This afternoon I slipped into (squeezed rather!) a panel discussion held for young filmmakers with a two-fold purpose:

*To provide instructions for the upcoming short film contest.
  (deadline to submit May 15th)

*To provide advice for filmmakers trying to get a foot-hold in the business.

In response to one question from a guest in the audience (who asked how  to establish ties and credibility in the film industry) an exec who worked under the producer for the feature film "Alexander" underscored that young hopefuls must be brave and take a stand with their employers.

He cited an example which demonstrted how little he knew about the in's-and'out's of the business (quite literally).

Apparently, the pompous  "quote" - industry-insider - "unquote" - was put off by a scene in which actor Colin Farrel exposed a little too much flesh (in his estimation).

"As a heterosexual  man, I objected to the fact he was showing so much of Farrel's ba**s," he actually said with a straight face.

I laughed out loud as the rest of the audience fell silent.

Obviously, he was clueless to the fact that his boss left the naugty scene in because it would rustle up a lot of gossip, titillation, and controversy - and hence - translate to a flurry of ticket sales at the box office.

In fact, all the filmgoers I was acquaintedf with at the time of the release, trotted of to catch the period flick on the wide screen (snicker) at the movie theatre for just that reason!

No wonder this hapless dude is handing out bad advice to novices in the industry at panel discussions; he doesn't appear to have much more to offer in the industry in my opinion.

A case of the bland leading the blind, eh?

The rest of the panel discussion was informative, enlightening, and worth taking in.

A post on the event will follow.

Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival...warped energy trips up events! Archie Kao appears with "People I've Slept With" cast on red carpet...

Throngs of film enthusiasts swarmed the DGA excitedly in chic designer threads with tickets in hand, the talented cast of “People I’ve slept with” strode the red carpet hyped-up and at-the-ready to discuss their much-anticipated sex comedy, and a rude unprofessional photographer cast a poll on the event long enough to raise a question or two in my mind.

Was it possible that some kind of warped energy swept through the DGA - and tarried just long enough - to throw a monkey wrench into an event that normally went off without a hitch on an upbeat note each year?

The Chinese have a saving worth pondering on occasions like these.

“May you live in interesting times."

Ultimately, will success spoil the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival?

3rd night into the festival, spirits were high, as the paparazzi started snapping away at a posse of well-heeled actors there to plug a movie they were in or one they were supporting on behalf of friends in the business.

On the red carpet, I was rustling up one-on-one interviews, contented as heck.

The cast of  - “People I’ve Slept with” -  were first up and were great subjects to work with by the way (the HD Video captures will be uploaded onto my YouTube site later today).

About two-thirds of the way through - a tall pushy photographer arrived late in the red carpet area - and began to barge his way through a line-up of press hounds who had staked out their perches an hour or so earlier.

At one point, he turned to me, and had the audacity to ask me to move to the other end of the roped-off VIP section so he could assume my spot.

Frankly,  he wasn't asking as much as he was demanding.

No way, Jose.

Not one to stab a person in the back (I prefer telling a person to their face what I think of them cause it helps me sleep nights) I proceeded to point out - in so many words - that he was an hour late for the red-carpet event, unprofessional, and insensitive to other people working the gig.

“You’re a selfish man who only thinks about himself,” I concluded before informing him I did not intend to budge an inch.

I should have broken into the show-stopping "Dream Girls" Broadway Stage hit.
“I tell you I'm going!”

In an angry retort, he yelled back at me.

“Ok. I apologize.”

But - because it was uttered up with such an acid tongue - it didn’t amount to a meaningful heartfelt one.

Was it just for show to appease the other photographers who were now gazing on - shocked - by his insulting conduct?

In addition to his inappropriate behavior, I couldn’t help but notice that he was obviously down on his heels a tad.

For instance, when he bent over at one point, I spotted a seam in the a** of his pants coming apart.

And, it was also obvious to me why folks were trying to avoid the man (who was constantly in everyone's  face) like the plague.

His breath was so wretched it turned the stomach.

Whew!

For the record, it should be noted that this loser has been turning up at events around town, like an old unwashed penny over the past year or so.

One day at the AFI Film Festival, I distinctly recall, that  he complained to me about the fact he often snapped three thousand shots for an event, but often found it difficult to make contacts with media outlets willing to publish (and pay for) the publicity stills.

My immediate thought?

Golly, if you can’t nab the image in two or three shots, give it up.

In my estimation, he’d be better off cleaning toilets somewhere.

At least in that line of employment, he wouldn’t have to fix the hole in his pants or purchase any mouth wash!

Then, at the screening of  - "People I’ve Slept with" -  director Quentin Lee revealed he must have had one too many drinks before the Q & A on stage.

Maybe he was on mind-altering drugs?

For instance, when asked how the “look” of the film - bolstered up with great lighting and a myriad of eye-catching colors which appealed to the artistic sensibilities - came about, he was quick on the uptake (but off the mark).

“Oh, the editor was responsible for that. We should get him up here,” Lee suggested almost as an afterthought.

When the affable dude strode up to the stage and joined the director, they proceeded to make silly remarks (which didn’t make any sense) about the editing process.

Was Mr. Lee Poking fun at the film buff who put forth a question that actually made sense (which ultimately flew over their heads?).

Fortunately, the female lead (Karin Anna Cheung) piped up after grasping the obvious.

“I think he was asking about the lighting, the choice of colors, and the “look” of the film.”

Ah, someone got it.

Duh!

As the director stood there like an idiot, Cheung  noted that there was a large female crew toiling away on the production on set - and that their influence amounted to a female touch.

Thank the Lord for feminine energy!

Quentin Lee didn’t have a clue!

A review of the raunchy sex comedy (riddled with stereotypes and clichés) will follow in a day or two.

At the after-party, it became evident that they should have aptly-named the film group - El Cheapo Productions, though - view of the stingy way they offered up the finger-food.

Before I dashed off to catch - "The Mikado Project" - I couldn’t help but notice that the waiter must have been having long breaks in the back room where the food was being prepared, or had been specifically instructed to drift through with the meager offerings every fifteen minutes or so (because there was so little of it to go around).

A low for the Asian Pacific Film Festival where the organizers are usually quite generous with their filmgoers and patrons.

Then, there was the issue of rude snippy volunteers and staff presiding over the prestigious Fest.

In the three years I’ve attended the festival, I have never encountered snotty workers on duty.

So, the two Asian women manning the door at the Atrium where Quentin’s after-party was being held, stood out like sore thumbs (or nasty bit**es, take your pick).

For instance, when guests attempted to depart the “Sleep" screening celebration, they often strode out of the Atrium with beer in hand for obvious reasons.

After all,  in the main lobby, a number of guests were sipping on bottled beer here and there so it didn’t appear there was any liquor consumption restriction.

The party-goers got a rude awakening when these two iron maidens sharply sniped at them to turn in their bottled beer before exiting the soiree.

Then, a second dilemma arose on the heels of that demand.

When a startled guest  attempted to sit the alcohol container down, there was no place to deposit it.

If the workers were professional, and had some smarts, they would have had a small side table available where guests could set the offending beer bottles down with little fuss.

Such a device would have also tipped off the guests that alcohol wasn’t allowed outside that perimeter.

Instead, the dizzy broads made guests go back into the Atrium, where they had to track down a table top or garbage to displose of it.

There were slim pickings in that regard!

As to “The Mikado Project”?

Well, for starters, a comment made in an intro before the screening just didn't fly.

A speaker at the podium asked filmgoers to look to their left and ask themselves one question.

Is that person next to me illegal?

Then, they were instructed to gaze in the other direction to the individual on the right side, and ponder the same question once again.

Everyone sat a little puzzled by the question.

Then, the off-the-wall host continued.

In the wake of the Arizona Immigration Law, the Asian-American people won't have to worry about being considered illegal.

Why?

He asserted that it was because of the preservation (and presentation) of films with a focus on the Asian-American community over the years, that the community had established around the country they were part of the fabric of the United States.

Hence, there was any chance that the Asian Community would be thought of as illegal.

Huh?

Frankly, I thought the comments were inapprorpiate.

Filmgoers were there to catch a flick, not be hammered over the head with the political agenda of the filmmakers or Festival organizers.

As to "The Mikado Project"?

A critical disaster!

The poorly-made feature was so shoddy and sloppy, it doesn’t even merit a bad review.

But, there were a few fun moments at the DGA Saturday eve.

At the after-party for the "People I’ve Slept With", for instance, ticket-holders who attended the screening were treated to free sex paddles (there are scenes in the film where a female character gets spanked with one) studded bondage neck collars, and other sex toys provided by the local WeHo Pleasure Chest.

A caterer by the name of  "First Street Cuisine" also  provided a number of delectable rice dishes (with chicken and the like) that were reasonable priced until they closed-up shop at about 7 p.m. in the lobby.

Fortunately, I snapped up a healthy-sized chicken & rice bowl before the festivities for the night commenced.

Otherwise, I would have starved to death, thanks to the stingy hosts!

But, today is a fresh day, and I expect that the energy will be renewed.

On the schedule?

Shannon Lee appears at the DGA in a panel discussion about her father Bruce Lee that is expected to attract a large audience of die-hard action-hero fans.

Later in the evening, I expect to take in a couple films.

The "Clash" and "Enemies of the People" (a doc on the "Killing Fields") look promising.

See 'ya there!
