Accident...horrific on Sunset Blvd! Blocks traffic mid-afternoon...

Just a few minutes ago, Firemen and Police arrived on the scene of a horrific accident on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood to check the injured and haul away the debris.

Spectators on the street were shocked by the dramatic upset mid-afternoon in the middle of a busy work day.

Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival...Shannon Lee, Bai Ling & Julia Ling dazzle filmgoers on red carpet!

Julia Ling a doll on red carpet!

Shannon Lee chatted up the paparazzi about a Tribute to her action-hero father (Bruce Lee), exotic Bai Ling did what she does best (posed for phtographers amid a frenzy of blinding flashbulbs), and pretty Julia Ling enchanted excited fans who pined for her on the sidelines.

Once again, the Asian Pacific Film Festival kicked off its annual week-long event at the DGA (featuring several smart venues around town and in the heart of West Hollywood) with a lot of fanfare.

The red carpet was teaming with a roster of artists which included such notables as - Susan Hirasuna (Fox 11 News), Elizabeth Bond (Bones), Dir. Chris Tashima (of the Oscar-winning "Visas and Virtues"), Amy Hill (Glee), and Dir. Arvin Chen (Au Revoir Taipei) -  to name a few.

In fact, if a journalist was to scan the list of talent provided by David Magdael (PR) and peruse their credits, it would be obvious that Asian-American performers have broken free of old show-biz myths and stale stereotypes..

Today, casting directors tend to be color blind (race is no longer a criteria unless called for specifically in a script for plot reasons) and more imaginative in their casting choices.

For example - when a role is being cast for a Nurse, a Policeman, and so forth and so on - it is no longer a prerequisite (according to old Hollywood standards) that the actor be a "male" or a "female".

Likewise, the door is wide open in respect to race, as well.

For the aforementioned reasons, and due to the efforts of Film Festivals such as the Asian Pacific, actors have been able to break that stifling mold.

As part of the opening night festivities, film buffs were treated to a world premiere screening of Alvin Chen's feature "Au Revoir Taipei".

I penned a review on the flick shortly after I caught a private screening last week.

Movie Review / Au Revoir Taipei

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2010/04/asian-pacific-film-festivalau-revoir.html

An informative Q & A followed with the director, the editor, and one of the actors.

When that session wrapped, excited guests dashed out into the lobby for the After-party to let off a bit of steam.

A dynamite DJ elevated the mood continually throughout the night with an electic mix of 80's hits and a far reaching selection of music that spanned over the decades right up to the current trends.

This year, the Festival offered up delectable desserts from a handful of local caterers (cupcakes from "Yummy Couture" were tasty ) and a trendy selection of alchoholic beverages (imported beer pour moi!) provided by the sponsors.

The buzz in the room became deafening as die-hard fans of the Asian Pacific Cinema partied boisterously into the festive night.

A good time was had by all!

The gala opening was quite the blow out, in fact.

I managed to capture a number of exciting entrances on the red carpet with my HD Video camera and expect to post a few of them on my site @ YouTube in the next couple of days.

Check it out, eh?

Screenings to catch the upcoming week include:
*The People I've Slept with
*Clash
*The Actresses
*The Mikado Project
*Bodyguards and Assasins

Nightmare on Elm Street...Box office candy dripping with blood! Starts today...

Just when folks thought it was safe to stroll down Elm Street once again, a cold shiver is inclined to run up-and-down the spine, instead.

No wonder!

"Nightmare on Elm Street" opens around the country today after laying low since 1994.

Jackie Earle Haley stars as "Freddy Kreuger" this time out and has yet to prove himself in the fright night world of Horror Genre classics.

Even still, the film is expected to rack up big bucks, first weekend out of the gate.

In view of the fact New Line pumped $35 million into the production, filmgoers - mostly young straight men - can expect a high dose of slasher thrills pushed to the max by virtue of  state-of-the-art special effects.

For die-hard fans, the studio has just released the original horror classic on Blu-Ray.

See 'ya there!

Richard Chamberlain...back on mainland in Hollywood! Tribute @ Aero Theatre!

Dr. Kildare is back on the mainland and ready to take your pulse - or send it soaring!

Handsome matinee idol, Richard Chamberlain, played the part of the good (sexy) doctor on the old boob tube a few decades ago - if you recall - when I was a mere lad not even on the fringes of show business.

Ultimately, the part was a bit of fluff, but turned out to be the vehicle that launched the talented actor  to superstar status.

Chamberlain - who has been residing in his permanent digs in exotic Hawaii for the past twenty years - has taken up residence once again in his West Hollywood apartment.

The likeable actor with the infectious grin is also receving a career tribute this weekend at the Aero Theatre.

Peter Weir's thriller - "The Last Wave" - is scheduled to screen on Friday (the plot that twists turn on an aboriginal murder).

In addition, Playwright/director - Neil LaBute - will discuss Chamberlain's career one-on-one on Saturday afternoon.

Richard's fans will have the opportunity to catch two additional films that day - Petulia (1968) - and "The Music Lovers" (1970).

According to the profile, Chamberlain is also slated to hit the boards live in a stage production in the near future.

Unforunately, the publicity still didn't do Mr. Chamberlain any justice.

Personally, I'd string the dude - who snapped the pic - up by the ba**s!

The photographer set the popular star against a basic plain backdrop, in the center of portrait-style frame, staring straight into camera with arms crossed in a boring fashion at the waist.

Talk about unflattering!

Mr. Chamberlain looked all skin and-bones-and like death warmed-over.

If I had undertaken the shoot, I would have asked the respected actor to laze back in a comfortable arm chair in a cosy den or an inviting living-room setting (with soft light filtering in from a nearby window, a coffee table stacked with obects d' art such as art tomes, asian artifacts, and the like) with his distinctive face turned slightly into camera.

The details, folks, that's what matters if you want to get it right!

In the informative interview, Chamberlain poignantly recalled fond memories of working with Kate Hepburn (who he starred opposite in "The Madwoman from Chaillot").

For example, the demanding perfectionist requested that the Thornbirds star meet her in person first,  before she would give the green light for casting.

The actor, who came "out" years ago, appears to be comfortable in his skin, even if the LA TIMES had difficulty fleshing it out.

I expect you'll spy Mr. Chamberlain around the neighborhood as he plucks up a few groceries now and then, or turns heads when he pops up at the local laundry with a handful of soiled linen dress shirts to be cleaned and pressed.

Happy Hunting if you're into celebrity sightings!

Habana Eva...Director Fina Torres & actress Prakriti Maduro @ glittering screening!

Torres @ the helm!

By 7 o'clock in the evening - a long line of filmgoers had formed in front of the Majestic Crest Theatre - anxious to catch the Fina Torres flick "Habana Eva"

Once inside the historical Art Deco theatre on Westwood, film buffs  were treated to Wine & and a delectable assortment of tasty cheeses, and the opportunity to mingle with the Ms. Torres and pretty actress Prakriti Maduro.

Torres and Maduro did not disappoint!

The Director of "Woman on Top" (starring Penlope Cruz) was a whirlwind of energy - meeting and greeting fans graciously - and posing for frenzied potographers anxious to land some publicity stills for posterity.

Actress Prakriti Maduro was stunning in a elegant cocktail dress in an eye-catching shade of red that accented her delicate features.

An hour afer the doors originally swung open to the press and celebrated guests, other VIP's were still straining to get into the lobby to bask in the glow of the high-profile event.

I spied a smattering of local celebrities decked out in their heavy artillery (jewels & dazzling gowns), in addition to Yeni Alvarez (PR), and close friends of the Director and film crew there for support.

In some cases, I crossed paths with a couple of actresses, who brought me up to date on this 'n that.

Lorielle New, who I met last year at the start of a project she was just commencing at that time, informed me that her horror (remake)  flick - "The Pit and the Pendalum" - was released just a few weeks ago and is doing well in DVD sales.

"Unfortunately, the economy bottomed-out, and the producers didn't have enough money to toss a premiere party. But, friends back East told me that fans have been snapping up DVD's on the Internet."

I laughed heartily when she noted that her DVD was actually being boot-legged.

Very flattering, in an odd sort-of-way!

The buzz in the air was deafening - right up until curtain was called - and all the excited guests finally plunked down in their seats to relax into the foreign film with subtitles.

Sold out!

Ms. Torres is a competent director with her own individual style.

In particular, her set-ups" (master shots, two-shots, close-ups) appealed  to my own artistic sensibilities.

Also, I was swept away by her keen ability to know - when and where - to lay in a potent soundtrack, whimsical piece of music, or danceable tune to get the filmgoers juices flowing.

Torres demonstrated that it is not always necessary to cram a film with stimulating melodious sounds and slick visuals to entertain or slyly manipulate the audience.

Silence on occasion is golden.

Unfortunately, I personally found the film too long.

When you're close to a project - and it is a labor of love (as was the case here) - it is obviously difficult to take a hard-line approach from a commercial standpoint.

Ms. Torres (a romantic) strays too far to one end of the spectrum in favor of artistic license, when she should have been going the other way if she is sincerely interested in landing distribution in the mainstream in the U.S. (and abroad).

A bit of judicious editing (pruning) would satisfy that need without hurting the integrity of the movie.

Torres was bang-on in the casting end, by the way.

Prakriti Maduro - a charmer - turns in a enchanting performance.

If I was forced to compare her to an American actress, Julia Roberts would come to mind, immediately.

Like Ms. Roberts, Maduro is capable of stepping into a plain-Jane role (sans make-up), and captivating movie audiences with a naturalness and innocence that is hard to top.

Juan Carlos Garia - in the romantic lead - proved to be charismatic and ripe with promise for stardom on these shores.

Yuliet Cruz almost stole the show out from everyone!

Although the Latino hooker with a heart-of-gold is a bit of a cliche characterization, this young lady's comedic timing, flare for the ridiculous, and basic talent can't help but bowl audiences over.

Other minor cast members turned in quality performances as well.

If the film comes to a theatre near you, catch it, it certainly is worth the price of admision.

Lindsay Lohan...@ Millions of Milkshakes! Paparazzi frenzy means $$$...

When Lindsay Lohan strode into "Millions of Milkshakes" (the local Celebrity hang-out) in WeHo the other evening - paparazzi, as usual - were in hot pursuit.

A media frenzy errupted in gay gulch @ Santa Monica & San Vicente as celebrity stalkers jockeyed for position.

One naive young dude shook his head, later.

"I don't get it, Crazy. Why do they stand outside the window taking her picture?"

I laughed.

Obviously, the kid was not in the topsy-turvy business.

I noted that Lindsay was the center of a media storm - right now - partly because of her unexpected witching-hour antics.

"She just got canned from a movie project. Is apparently in debt. And, some say, on the edge of a mental and emotional breakdown."

Also, because of Linday's tendency to fall down and go boom, the paparazzi wants to be there to catch it on film and reap the rewards.

"Huh," he stuttered.

"Well, recently she fell into a cactus bush. The photographer who caught that quirky moment on camera  probably nabbed some big bucks for the shot if it was the best "capture" any of the paparazzi submitted to the news agencies," I added.

"They're probably hoping she'll trip and spill a goey celebrity milkshake all over her cocktail dress."

"Oh," he chuckled.

"Or," I mused, "Spill one on her to get the shot."

Then, was it my imagination, or did it appear that a light bulb went off inside the dude's calculating little brain?

Uh-huh, just betcha, he's going to dash out and buy a camera.

Next week, I expect I'll spy him shoving his way into the pack of wolves for a lion's share of the profits.

Millions of Milkshakes has become quite the hot spot, in WeHo, anyway.

Inside, the atmosphere is quite upbeat and visually stimulating.

Throughout the day, clips of celebrities concocting their own shakes on the premises, are featured on  wide screens dotted about the ice-cream outlet.

There is even a Celebrity GPS tracker to follow the where-abouts of  high-profile stars!

Of course, die-hard fans can also plunk down a few hard-earned bucks, to sip on one of their favorite milkshakes, too.

See 'ya there!

Pssst!

Pam Anderson can oft be spotted at Millions of Shakes on Santa Monica.
Her vegan Milkshake is on tap, so give it a whirl!

Dave Letterman...gets MoJo juicing with record label! Runner Runner first pop-punk band on roster...

When some old dudes start to feel  a bit past their prime - and mid-life crisis sets in - they may be inclined to plop down a fistful of big bucks for a top-of-the-line sports car.

Yeah, a Ferrari seems like such a waste, with a balding silver-haired Lothario behind the wheel, eh?

Letterman, on the other hand, has found another way to get his MoJo juicing.

Worldwide Pants, Inc. - Dave's show-biz entity - has just rustled up a recording partnership with Clear Entertainment/C.E. Music

Runner Runner is the first pop-punk band to sign with the music label.

The Huntington Beach-based group will debut a roster of tunes in a few months.

In the meantime, music-lovers who want to get a jump on this scintillating new entry into the rock world, may catch their lively single "So Obvious" at their my space web site.

Nazis? Janice Hahn a stupid cu** on City Council! Clueless in LA LA LAND...

When they invented the term "stupid cu**, they must have been thinking of Janice Hahn on City Council in Los Angeles.

No wonder!

In the morning daily it was reported that Janice Hahn has been opening up her big yap over Arizona Senator Brewer's decision to sign landmark Immigration Reform into law.

In particular, the bill stipulates that - when stopped by law enforcement on legitimate grounds - the individual is required to produce documents establishing their identity and legal status in the U.S.

In response to that reasonable request, Ms. Hahn has flown off the handle (must be that time of the month) and wildly accused Brewer of introducing Nazi-style measures which she alleges are in direct violaton of Civil rights.

Bullsh**!

Just on its face, the bizarre (misguided) notion by Hahn doesn't make sense, when you think about it for two seconds.

For example, when a motorist gets pulled over for a traffic violation in "anywhere USA" - and a police officer  asks for identification - are they within their rights (based on Hahn's wild theory) to refuse to hand over their "papers"?

Maybe they should call the cop a "Nazi" -  drive off angrily - and leave him in a cloud of dust at the side of the road!

Notwithstanding, Ms. Hahn's comments show her complete lack of sensitivity to the feelings of the youth of Germany, today.

Indeed, why should they be continually forced to wear a badge of guilt and shame - the outrageous conduct of their ancestors - which took place long before they were born into this world?

The past is the past, Ms. Hahn.

It's high time people like you (and the Jews) let it go.

As to the proposed boycott of Arizona, well, think again Ms. Hahn.

If  you (and six other council members) are under the impression that ou have the best interests of the people at heart - well - think again.

In recent polls, 70% of Americans noted that they supported Governor Brewer's Immigration Reform Bill.

And, just betcha, other states will be falling into line with similar legislation.

Try for the boycott, and you'll find your sorry a**es out on the street next election.

Your vision is "backward" not forward.

It's because of folks like you that Los Angeles has become a third world city.

Travel with Gannon and Wyatt...young adventurers boast show on Discover!

As I half-turned to check out a couple of booths at the Los Angeles Festival of Books over the weekend, I suddenly spied two young boys - all suited up in western-style garb - and leather de rigueur cowboy hats.

Somehow, the image they projected smacked of the Indiana Jones character featured in Steven Spielberg's successful action-adventure series.

The two brothers - Gannon & Wyatt - gazed out from behind a counter in a picturesque tent - where eye-catching publicity shots of their mugs (in captivating locales in the wilds) were inclined to catch the attention of passers-by.

In fact, a few excited teen-age girls were anxious to have one slick poster - beautifully-crafted - autographed by the young male cuties.

When I queried the intriguing duo about their booth, they explained that they had a web site, where they logged day-to-day events of their travels to local, exotic, and foreign lands.

The site is a well-designed entertaining entry into the blogosphere!

Once you land on their web site, a twin-prop airplane, roars across the screen.

Then, an introduction springs to life, with information on the two eager adventurers.

In the tradition of Lewis & Clark, Dr. David Livingstone &  Captain James Cook - "Travels with Gannon and Wyatt" - offers up the Wheeler's detailed journals for interested web cruisers to feast upon.

From Africa to the South Pacific, these twin brothers have traveled to all corners of the globe, their bio goes on to report.

The journals, photographs and videos compiled on those expeditions provide the foundation for an action-packed - fun - educational series they noted would probably be appearing on the Discover Channel in the fall.

Take a gander!

Boys in the Band...West Hollywood Coast Playhouse production! Runs thru May 16th...

In the heart of WeHo - at the Coach Playhouse - a troupe of actors is taking a stab at a live stage production of Mart Crowley's acid-tongued comedy "The Boys in the Band".

In a nutshell, the plot centers around a circle of gay friends, who gather to celebrate the birthday of one of their "own".

Referred to as - the frankest depiction of Homosexuality ever to hit the stage - the well-written play has become a classic over the years.

Although Crowley's cast of characters tend to be stereotypical, and often trot the boards in over-the-top cliche scenarios, it is a foray into the "gay" world worth catching.

The material was adapted for the screen and faired well in major U.S. cities where there were larger concentrations of "gay" audiences to appeal to.

For the most part, the reviews were stinging.

Among major reviewers, Pauline Kael stridently reported, that there was absolutely nothing redeeming about it.

Her critics accused that the nasty review was triggered by the fact she hated William Friedkin (who directed).

Variety said it "dragged" but had a "perverse interest."

Time Magazine described it as a "humane and moving picture."

Although The LA Times praised it as "unquestionably a milestone" - the puritanical powers-that-were (at the time) - refused to run the studio's ads in the daily.

Musings out of the gay ghetto in San Francisco (at the Chronicle) were harsh.

After labeling the project - "Uncle Tomism" - one reviewer asserted that "Boys" belonged in another time in view of the attitudes of its characters and their self-lacerating vision of themselves.

You be the judge!

Los Angeles...Latino shopowners on Olvera Steet hold back rent! Little Mexico under siege...

For the first time in years, I hopped on the red line and zoomed downtown (a scant few months ago), to spend a carefree day on Olvera Street in a part of town affectionately known as "Little Mexico".

Over the decades the popular tourist attraction has blossomed into quite a picturesque respite from the cement ravines bordering the precious little strip of property on all sides.

In fact, I was so captivated by the decorative tooling on the facades of Mexican-style restaurants - and a handful of historic buildings dating back two hundred years or so - that I was inclined to capture some footage on HD Video which I posted to YouTube.

Quaint Olvera Street Restaurant (Little Mexico)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC8U3ybdwLw&feature=player_embedded

Olvera Street Sign (Cart)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfzNgGCTWRw&feature=player_embedded

Sun Dial (Olvera Street)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZT70ruP84I&feature=player_embedded

Curiously, later in the week, a local newspaper reported that city council was holding meetings behind closed-doors with the aim of raising the rents in the festive little oasis (cut off from the rest of the city when the highway and bridge over-hangs were installed years ago) because they were too low.

It suddenly dawned on Council members that the valuable strip of property - a potential hefty earnings-getter - was being rented out for a song with virtually no profit flowing into the Los Angeles City coffers.

So, in January of this year - after a market value study of the property was completed - Council decided that the rents would be raised to be on par with other properties owned by the City and its tax-paying citizens.

Moreover, the extra funds were needed to balance the budget.

For example, the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument Society - charged with the upkeep of a memorial in the historic square - required an $800,000.00 subsidy from the city's general fund to balance its budget in recent years.

Increasing rents now is the best way to prevent subsidies from depleting city funds in coming years.

The report recommended that retail shopkeepers pay $2 - $6.50 per square foot.

The city controller's office has confirmed that most tenants on Olvera have been paying a paltry $1.35  per foot until the new rates were calculated and put into effect a few weeks ago.

Owners of kiosk-style spaces on the strip, on the other hand, have been paying an average of $300.00 a month.

Olvera shopkeepers should be charged $950 - $1350 monthly depending on the location.

El Pueblo officials have tried to push for rental increases over the years, but confided to the media in confidence, that a powerful politically-connected group has been thwarting their efforts.

Who could be more powerful than City Council or the California State Government?

It appears there may be an "invisible black hand" behind-the-scenes orchestrating control of the land.

If so, there must be a full investigation, to determine who the players are.

And, likewise, there must be swift severe action to nip the nefarious forces in the bud.

Surely, Citizens of Los Angeles don't hanker to the idea of corruption and violence breaking out in the streets downtown, true drug-cartel Latino-style!

In spite of the fact industry analysts have noted that the increases aforementioned are at a low end of the scale (tenants are still gettting a great deal) Olvera street tenants are rebelling.

A number of businessman, for instance, have held back rent money - and in some cases - checks were returned from the bank unpaid marked "stop pay" at the direction of digruntled merchants.

Imagine that!

Vivien Bonzo, President of the Olvera Street Merchants Association, is one of the flakes (who allegedly owes $5,095.00 in back rent).

Shouldn't Miss Bonzo (bozo?) be holding herself up as role model to her business neighbors?

Other tenants substantially behind include - Myrosa Enterprises (which is operated by Mike Marsical) - which currently owes in excess of $4,324.00 in back rent.

When a reporter from a weekly paper called Marsical's office to verify the facts, he hung up the phone angrily.

I expect that rude tantrum translates to:  no comment!

Will the defaulting rent-payers be given legal three-day notices to "pay or quit"?

Let's hope so!

After all,  if any - White, Afro-American, or Asian tenant refused to pay their rent - they'd be tossed into the street on their despicable deadbeat a**es.

In closing, it appears that Latino tenants have chosen the wrong time to fudge on their responsibilities.

The Governor in Arizona was recently forced to pass a landmark Immigration Reform Bill to resolve the issue of illegal immigrants crossing the border, and subsequently, draining vital State resources.

Now, their refusal to pay rent in California, underscores that Latino Immigrants are pparently a bunch of free-loaders who don't like to pay their way, bent on sapping America dry.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the next time Americans catch site of a Latino marching in U.S. Streets waving a Mexican flag, that they'll finally put their foot down and issue an ultimatum.

"Get out!"

Hopefully, the city will stand tough on the eviction notices, and other states will follow with similar immigration reform bills, to purge the nation of the illegal immigrant nightmare

Iron Man 2...premiere! Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson & Sylvester Stallone wow!

The crew were taping down the last edge of the red carpet (to ensure there weren't any nasty spills once the night's glam festivities commenced), fans were gathering in a frenzy at the packed curb on the famed strip, and all mayhem broke loose when Mickey Rourke alighted from a limo.

"Mickey! Over here," the ecstatic fans (who were crushing me at every nerve ending from all sides) cried out.

"Sign," they pleaded (as they flapped publicity stills excitedly in his direction).

The Oscar-nominated star of  - "The Wrestler" - obliged to their great delight.

He swaggered over in dress slacks, a trendy dinner jacket (with alligator lapels?), a white "t", and ubiquitous shades which lent an air of mystery to the largely misunderstood Hollywood persona.

As the film buffs stuck out photographs, he signed 'em with a distinctive flourish, which caused quite a sensation on the street.

In fact, as he approached me, a crush of enthusiastic fans thrust forward unexpectedly, and I nearly ended up tumbling on top of the studly star!

Boy, wouldn't that be something to write home about!

I managed to utter - "Great to see you, Mickey" - before he was led off down the red carpet to the ravenous paparazzi waiting to devour the star in front of the Chinese Theatre.

Instead of perching in the press corps tonight, I staked out a spot at Orange and Hollywood Blvd.

It turned out to be a primo location to catch the interactions between the stars - and the most important guests of the evening - the fans!

And, the nervy throng, didn't waste the golden opportunity.

When Scarlett Johansson was spied exiting her sleek ride the crowd went wild.

Boy, the actress was quite a knock-out!

The thoughtful beauty strode over to sign autographs and floated by me at one point this-close.

Her gown was a sheer whimsical fantasy sculpted out of fabric and fitted to her sexy svelte frame.

The hair was swept off the face - which was a good look for the pretty actress - with dazzling porcelain skin.

The Diamond studs which sparkled in the light - when she turned this way 'n that - were an understated elegant touch.

Sam Rockwell strode over and signed autographs, and was all business, in a tasteful well-tailored suit.

I almost missed Sylvester Stallone who breezed out of his luxury vehicle and straight onto the red carpet.

Damn those well-trained handlers!

In contrast, Hollywood's finest - the men in blue - were quite respectful to the lookie-loo's.

Well, to a point.

One anxious out-of-towner asked a tall handsome cop if he could get Robert Downey Jr. to sign his poster.

"No, sorry. That would be unprofessional," he noted politely.

True!

But, it doesn't hurt to try to twist an arm now and then, though.

One Gwyneth Paltrow fan (a pretty blond female from Australia) went gaga when she spied the statuseque  beauty stroll down the carpet.

"Gwyneth," she hollered.

"Over here!"

Andrian Brody - with slicked back "do" and squeezed into an expensive leather jacket and jeans - smiled in the direction of shouting fans (but kept walking).

"Heh, it's the snoz," one onlooker joked.

For the most part, the stars were chauffeured up in sleek Audi SUV's, which was mighty impressive.

Occasionally, a classy black (or white) Rolls Royce would purr up to the drop-off-point, causing heads to twist-and-turn in anticipation of a star arrival.

Samuel L. Jackson was pretty cool, with signature cap twisted correctly on his skull, underscoring his keen fashion sense.

Hugh Heffner put in an appearance, too, with a bevy of bodacious blond babes in tow.

How does he keep it up - um - keep up?

I understand he'll be celebrating his 80th birthday (just did?).

Gary Shandling looked a bit stuffy, but glad to be invited to the big top.

Was that James Spader I saw kibitzing with fellow actors on the edge of the runway?

At one point, there were so many luminaries in the business zooming up, that it was hard to keep up (or on track)

Occasionally, a stretch limo squealed to a halt, and a pack of thirty-something men would fall into line to  run the gaunlet.

"Who are they?" curious onlookers quizzed.

"Oh, probably the studio execs, agents, public relations staff," I joked.

The hanger's on, I was guffawing to myself.

One of the employees for the studio gave out souvenirs for Iron Man II.

My partners in crime on the strip were envious of the green mechanical man I was gifted with.

I'll prop him up in the windshielf of my SUV - a fond memory of a glittery night on the Hollywood Walk of Fame rubbing shoulders with the little people - who oil the dream factory in the final analysis.

They snap up the tickets, after all!

Dating...pick-up lines that get you in-like Flynn! Only the lonely...

On one of the local morning talk shows, DJ’s were discussing the best pick-up lines to land a date with the fair sex.

It was agreed, without hesitation, that moving in too quickly on the prey was a bad idea.

Looking too desperate (or horny) was not such a great way to start off a relationship apparently (according to the polls, anyway).

Pu**y savvy Don Juans were hip to the fact that surveying the dating terrain from afar for a moment or two was the best approach for dudes anxious to score.

Timing was important, after all.

It wouldn’t hurt for a horn dog to pay attention to an "open letter" to males that recently appeared in a slick monthly magazine.

In that hilarious piece, women revealed what they found attractive in men.

A guy who drinks scotch is sexy, most tarted-up ladies fessed up.

"He shouldn't drink anything sweet or frothy,” the  expert noted.

An un-manly cocktail like that might land you a date with her young brother, instead.

A caller this morning was asked to show his stuff by way of a little amusing play-acting on the live broadcast.

As a laid-back Lothario, he wasn’t half bad.

“Heh, the weekend’s coming up. What are you up to?"

The “heh” softened the approach, I guess.

A way to sort-of slide into home base.

The smooth disc jockey suggested the date-master utilize the fact  actress Jo-Lo’s latest feature film - The  Back-up Plan - was currently screening to maneuver a cozy rendez-vous at the local movie house.

The suggestion caused the dude’s pulse rate to rev up right away.

“The sweat’s breaking already,” he joked.

There’s an old saying which goes something like this.

“A fair maiden was never won by a faint heart.”

When interviewed - a bevy of  pretty gals (and handsome guys) - admitted they were lonely.

“Most people think we’ll be too selective because of our looks.”

Nope.

Time and time again I have noticed a knock-out sitting at a bar sipping on a cocktail alone, because potential dates in the lounge were too intimidated to make a play for their affection (and feared rejection).

Then, some average-looking person was bold enough to walk up, and say hi.

Guess what?

A large percentage of the time, the twosomes departed together, at which point the other folks in the room started kicking themselves.

Want a line that I have used over the years that never fails?

“So, are you into guys with big dicks?”

Works like a charm every time!

Stephen Hawking...mathematician's notions on Aliens preposterous! Human knee-jerk reaction...

The opinions of Stephen Hawking - the genius mathematician - triggered a few shock waves on the Internet over the weekend when a couple of his theories on the subject of alien life forms were published on a myriad of websites.

From a mathematical standpoint, Mr. Hawking was inclined to take a bold stand, and assert that there was a strong likelihood that humans were not alone in the Universe.

While I agree with that assumption, I found fault with his notion that aliens should be avoided, because they would probably be hostile.

On the contrary, last year - I received a message (which I penned a post on) - in which I was informed that alien life forms often travel through our corner of the galaxy with nary a thought about conquering the human race (or even nodding a polite hello).

In that post, I also published a map of the night sky, where the intelligent beings hail from.

Because Mr. Hawking is a respected scientist, with a brilliant mind (and proven track record), folks flock to his lectures and give a lot of credence to his theories.

In this instant case, for the most part, it appears that Hawking has been screening too many Hollywood features on space invaders.

Also, his bizarre idea that aliens might be squiggly monster-like beings, are totally wild in nature.

Senility must be setting in!

It appears that Mr. Hawking can’t differentiate between what is real and what is sheer fantasy.

Rest assured, the human race does not have to fear a threat of attack from outer space.

I have it on high authority!

Now, I think I’ll go rent a copy of Ed Wood's - Plan 9 From Out Space - and have a good laugh!

Fairfax Theater...future in jeopardy! Art Deco Society up in arms!

A couple of weeks ago when I sauntered up to take a gander at the features running currently at the Fairfax Theatre, I was taken aback to encounter a hastily-written note informing theatre-goers that the movie house - a mainstay in the community for over eighty years - was shut down due to water damage.

Unfortunately, the owner was a sly devil, who wasn't being entirely on the up-and-up with the community at large.

The Property owner - Alex Gorby - announced recently that the Fairfax (which was being operated by Regency Theatres) would remain closed indefinitely after suffering major damage during rainstorms this year.

"The landlord did not want to make the necessary repairs, so we had to terminate the lease," said Andrew Golin (VP of Regency Theatres).

"We are saddened by the closure."

In fact, the owner had no intention of throwing open the Theater doors, at all.

Gorby has proposed a mixed-use retail and residential project that would include 71 living units and and  224 underground parking spaces.

He has attempted to smooth the waters by asserting that he intends to maintain the theater's qaint historic Art Deco facade.

"The design is absolutely exquisite," his slick spokesman assured the media recently.

To some, that is not good enough.

John Thomas, of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles, said vigorous efforts underfoot to save the  Fairfax are not just about architecture.

The Fairfax Theatre is woven into the fabric of the community, after all.

"We view the Fairfax not only as a historic treasure, but as a social and cultural treasure, given the role it has played in the Fairfax District for the past 80 years," said Hillsman Wright (who is the co-founder of the Los Angeles Historical Theatre Foundation).

Inside the classic revival movie house, there are exquisite Art Deco flourishes in all three theaters, that reflect the ture elegance and style of the era.

"It's much more than a physical structure," Wright added.

I suffer from insomnia, so I often took in screenings at the Insomniac Cinema.

The wild fun raucous events - packed to the rafters - are some of my most memorable moments in the neighborhood over the years.

Here's a sampling of a handful of posts on the midnight screenings at the witching hour.

Dazed & Confused to screen at Insomniac Cinema

Post:  03/05/08

http://fraudphishing-financialmisdees.blogspot.com/2008/03/insomniac-cinemadazed-and-confused.html

One of my foster mothers (who gave me shelter in her perch on Point Grey in Vancouver when I was a teenage run-a-way) actually took in screenings there (and munched on popcorn) when she was a toddler.

Jeannie Kamins resided on Kings Road with her parents (her father was a respected doctor in the Los Angeles area) in the heart of picturesque West Hollywood at the basin of the Hollywood Hills long before I discovered the gay mecca in the seventies and before it was an Incorported gay city.

Jeannie actually played in the street in front of the famous Shindler house (which still stands today amid a tony configuration of upscale condos).

She'll be devastated to hear the news!

Neighbors joined preservationists and community activists in recent weeks to collect petition signatures and to celebrate the cinema's 80th birthday.

During World War II, the theater served as a rallying point for information, and fundraising for the district's thriving Jewish community.

It was often used for religious services and political and social events.

"It's in many ways part of the heart and soul of that neighborhood," one neighbour poignantly noted to a reporter.

"We came here as children. We had our first dates here. We courted our spouses here. We brought our children and grandchildren here," said Cliff Cheng (head of the West of Fairfax Neighbors Society).

The Fairfax has been nominated to become a Los Angeles historic-cultural monument.

Until then, the landlord's ambitious plans are on hold.

Stay tuned!

Los Angeles Times Festival of Books...Omar J. Dorsey's vulgar language upsets parents! John Heard mesmerizing...

What's the big deal?
(Cederling Fox candid moment)

John Heard mesmerizing!

A "Word Theatre" presentation started off light and innocent enough on the - etc. stage - late this afternoon at the Los Angeles Festival of Books on the UCLA campus.

For example, Tess Harper read a delightful piece of literature about a relationship between a mother and son, which was well-received by the rapt audience.

But, the live stage performance turned ugly when actor Omar J. Dorsey (Blind Side) stood before the mic, and suddenly began hurling shocking expletives in all their vulgar capacity into the theatre space.

The reaction from some parents was swift and severe.

"There are children here, you mother****er!

Instead of taking a moment to admit the inappropriateness of the material - or apolgoize - Mr. Dorsey proceeded to exhibit a disturbing lack of sensitivity.

What was his angry response?

"Forget about it!

He plunged on unphased.

I was stunned, frankly.

When Cederly Fox, the Artistic Director for "Word Theatre" returned to the stage at the end of the actor's reading, I was on the edge of my seat.

Would she ignore the incident?

"Sorry about the expletives," she grimmaced.

Then, without skipping-a-beat, she uttered up a comment that put the spotlight on her lack of professionalism.

"But, it's an adult show," she shrugged in defense.

What an arrogant bit**!

Her flimsy excuse, in view of the circumstances, was total bullsh**.

For example, the show was presented on a main stage at the entrance to the UCLA campus.
four in the afternoon, the questionable material was being broadcast over a handful of speakers, and falling on the ears of Festival guests (largely comprised of parents and children) a hundred-or-so feet in all directions (at a minimum).

Notwithstanding, it should be noted that there weren't any notices posted - warning parents that the "adult material" (as Fox described it) - might not be suitable for children.

The fact the dizzy broad thought that Dorsey's blue performance was acceptable (duh!) underscored that the inexperienced low-life has no common sense, all the intelligence of a worm, and a lack of discernment in respect to artistic license in a given setting.

I trust that the Los Angeles Times will review tomorrow's material, and weed out unacceptable language, to ensure young children and their parents are not subjected to this kind of filth again.
Obviously, the organizers of - "etc. stage" - aren't going to bother!

As a major sponsor, the daily newspaper owes that to the community, in my estimation.
In spite of the Dorsey shocker, the event ended on an upbeat note.

John Heard, one of my favorite actors, mesmerized the audience with his interpretation of a piece on "crows".

In contrast the other actors, Mr. Heard's style was natural and believable.

In fact, with great ease, he managed to give the impression that he was in a private conversation with each and every member of the audience.

His relaxed, easy-going approach to the hilarious literature, was certainly bang on.

Few actors - Richard Burton was one - are capable of accomplishing that in one fell swoop!

As to the rest of the Festival, well, it was a high point of my week.

I will be reporting on some of the events in a post later this evening.

For those of you planning to attend tomorrow (Sunday) I have some tips on where to purchase reasonably-priced snacks and drinks (lemonade on the main concourse goes for $5.00 pop!) for those on a budget.

There will be info on which booths are giving out free books.

And, a run-down on stage performances in the line-up tomorrow.

Los Angeles Opera (free!) anyone?

Later!

Omar's vulgar language incited anger at family outing.

Blogging...artist's multi-media-rich canvas! Art reflects times...

All of my life I have been an artist - so, of course - I have the temperament.

Whenever I create a painting or a piece of writing I do so with the intent of making a statement.

After all, art should reflect the times we are living in.

The role of the artist is to teach and enlighten and inspire.

With the advent of the internet and its subsequent popularity - and the development of nifty multi-media-rich blog sites - a new canvas sprang forth which was perfect for my own talents.

For example, my flair for - design, graphics, and color - could be applied to craft an eye-catching aesthetically-pleasing web site that exalted my own sense of style.

Unlike a book that may take a year or two to publish - there is an immediacy to blog posts, too - which has widespread appeal.

When it comes to social and political issues, a blog is a great way to get the word out fast, to the multitudes.

During the process, hopefully, a blogger will be able to raise the consciousness.

Initially, folks were up-in-arms and raged about the legitimacy of blogging.

To some, bloggers who penned articles on hard news - the election, profiles on public figures, social ills, etc. - were somehow not legit.

Journalists early on complained that bloggers didn't have the professional training - and that their lack of ethical standards - tended to throw a wild card into the mix.

Then, as newspaper sales plummeted - and bloggers started to rustle up some clout on the Internet - the dailies sat up and took notice.

Today, most journalists with major newspapers, have blogs that are universally accepted.

Bloggers have not only risen above the adversity in media circles, but are often quoted today, as reliable sources.

I have found that the lowly masses - at times - still shake their heads, though.

If a blogger writes an informative well-researched tell-all  piece - that happens to be controversial in nature - more often-than-not they get lambasted.

“Who do these bloggers think they are,” is the common lament heard across the land.

I pen my thoughts on the human condition - report on what I perceive all around me - and offer up a commentary on occasion.

I’m no different than a mainstream journalist who boasts a daily column in a high-profile publication.

When Andy Rooney spouts off on 60 minutes - no one questions his authority - or right to express his point of view.

Fox pundits hurl outrageous barbs (and half-truths) and no one bats an eye!

“Oh, that’s just Fox,” folks slyly wink.

Even the outlandish screaming headlines in the exploitative tabloids - grocery market fodder at the check-out line - are considered the norm (nothing to pooh pooh).

But, if a blogger does it?

The truth of the matter is that many get slammed.

I say, every forum has its merits and degrees of legitimacy.

So, I am no different than any other media outlet at the Tattler, in the final analysis.

I may take a pot shot at a store that rips people off, focus on a celebrity gaining notoriety, or toss a searing spotlight a news event that has taken the country by storm.

Or, simply muse on day-to-day events that touch people.

The Tattler's slogan is aptly titled:  A Slice of Life.

As far as I am concerned, that's my job, my lot in life (as an artist).

Just recently I was thrilled to hear a major film director point out to an interviewer that in film school, his professor hammered into his students, that every human being has a story worth telling.

It is an artist’s duty to makes sense of it - and tell it from their unique point of view - he noted in so many words.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Daily, my dramas and light-hearted adventures, unfold on my blog.

Judging by the numbers (hits) quite a few people are either educated, entertained , or downright intrigued by what I have to say.

As a mainstream alternative, I do pretty well!

And, what of the critics?

If I am not your cup of tea, then surf on to the next site.

Good riddance!

Ultimately, the Tattler is geared toward sophisticated intelligent individuals, who have a keen sense about Literature, and the role that the artist plays in the modern day.

Now,  if I could only get down to writing that Great Canadian Novel!

Carl Jung once said:

"Art is a kind of innate drive that seizes a human being and makes him its instrument. To perform this difficult office it is sometimes necessary for him to sacrifice happiness and everything that makes life worth living for the ordinary human being."
