Giorgio Armani...Men's casual chic springs forward this season!

For spring/summer 2009, Armani is pushing a casual chic for men with the pannache to pull the look off.

Some of the offerings hail from the past - because oldies are golden goodies - after all.

Like the guru shirt - a mainstay that has made the rounds from generation to generation unscathed - save for an updated flourish or two to weather fashion's fickle trends.

Team it up with a pricey pair of designer jeans, quality loafers (sans socks), and a slouchy hat with distinct personality.

Cardigans - once sported by Dad to tool around the house - are now being worn flush against naked flesh and open at the neck and chest to reveal buffed torsos.

If you've got it, why not flaunt it with style?

A dress slack with pleats or cuffs , paired with well-crafted high-end shoes, round out the ubiquitous man-about-town appeal.

Bomber style leather jackets - with snaps and zippers (or not) - are making an entrance again this spring in slick, glossy fabrics, that add a splash of excitement to the outerwear.

Daring dudes will team it up with white linen pants, a raging pink silk dress shirt, and just maybe slip into one-of-a-kind cowboy boots!

In spite of these peacock rages venting themselves near and far, there will still be a big focus on elegant understated quality suits sparked up with classy accessories (such as designer ties, gold cuff-links on french cuffs, well-crafted signature belts, and even puffed-up pocket handkerchiefs hanging just so).

Life's not a dress rehearsal, 'ya know.

Get with it, Dude!

Jacumba...Nature's healing spirit caresses! Mystical forces uplift...

Nature's majesty in Jacumba pass

As I crept up a steep incline to the crest of the mountain - Jacumba (a quaint little town) - sprang into view.

Without much thought, I jumped at the chance to stride into the warm glow of the snack shop that beckoned from beyond, since my stomach had been growling for nourishment for about an hour or two.

Inside, a pretty little waitress built a sub for me on Honey Oat bread and packed it high with American cheese, lettuce and tomato - and all the trimmings - pickles, onions, green peppers, salt & pepper, and a dollop of honey mustard.

As I gobbled down the scrumptious sandwich in the front seat of my vehicle, I couldn't help but think that life was sweet!

Minutes later, I was trundling down the canyon, when I suddenly realized it was full of glorious surprises, too.

As dusk started to fall all around me - the once-vivid blue sky was now not only awash and tinged with passionate strokes of deep purple - but also infused with inky-black trouble spots which ultimately transformed the sky into a moving canvas of such intensity and fury!

Suddenly - and without warning - an eerie luminous light (awesome to gaze upon) - swirled within a storm of billowing clouds that proceeded to transform the canopy into a breathtaking scene brimming with all of Nature's spectacular majesty.

The landscape was breathing - alive! - and speaking volumes to me.

Earlier in the day, I also experienced another odd phenomenon, after a near-accident on the highway.

About ten o'clock in the morning I was cruising along - when, for some inexplicable reason - I must have dozed off at the wheel!

Suddenly, as the two outer wheels of my SUV hit the loose rubble on the shoulder, I jolted back to consciousness and was able to take control of the vehicle before it rolled over into the ditch.

At this juncture, I hazarded a guess that an exhausting ten days of non-stop activity, must have taken their toll at long last.

Undoubtedly, the troubling incident was a surefire indication that I needed a cat nap before venturing on.

So, I sped up the road to the nearest rest area and proceeded to take a much-needed break.

About two hours later, intermittent rain cascaded down, splashed the window near my bowed head, and awakened me from my deep slumber.

When I stepped outside on the pavement to stretch my legs a little, I was taken aback when I noticed that it had rained on just one side of my vehicle, in addition to the front windshield.

As I tried to fathom the odd occurrence, I couldn't help but notice that the other vehicles parked at the turnoff were completely dry!

Was this a sign from the heavens beyond?

Needless to say, a surge of overwhelming peace swept over my entire being.

God appears to be watching over me!

So, what are his plans for my future, I wonder.

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you."

Amen!

Dallas...Cancer Plaza: A tribute of hope! Richard & Annette Bloch Angels of light...

After AFI Dallas wrapped, I wiled away a few days checking out the local tourist hot-spots downtown.

At Pegasus Square (Main & Akard) a picturesque little park with fresh-water brooks tumbling over whimsical water sculptures - bore an inscription on a rock face which was inspiring.

"Where the hoof of Pegasus hits the ground a well springs forth and the muses come to dance and sing."

But, I was just as touched by a well-manicured patch of greenery a few city blocks away, that I stumbled on later that afternoon amid the seemingly endless hustle and bustle of the downtown core.

The park - Cancer Plaza - was donated by two kind-hearted souls - Richard & Annette Bloch - in a bold-faced effort to raise the consciousness about the killer disease.

With that in mind, the Blochs set informative plaques about the aesthetically-pleasing square, to enlighten passers-by about a course of action to take in order to save the lives of those stricken.

In addition, a couple of sculptures have been installed, to better educate the affliced and their families.

For example, a five-hundred pound granite ball rotates continually in a fountain base at one end of the square.

The Blochs explain that the granite "object" is not unlike a "mass" of cancer cells that are constantly "on the move" in the human body.

Across the way, a striking sculpture consisting of five figures and a maze-like structure, commands attention.

The artist explained the concept.

"Five figures represent cancer patients and their supporters preparing for treatment (represented by the maze) . For this reason, there are expressions of fear, determination and hope on their faces."

"In contrast, three figures at the front of the art piece are joyous, because treatment has been successful."

Here and there about the tranquil setting - in support of the "Tribute to Hope" - the Blochs have not only provided up-to-the-minute facts on "cancer", but also a raft of helpful tips on how to combat cancer on levels beyond physical therapy with drugs.

For instance, it is noted that patients should consider meditation - with the ultimate aim of calming their nerves and reducing anxiety - since a progression of cancer may be triggered by stress-related conditions that adversely affect the immune system.

A regimen of good health, in tandem with a healthy diet, is also urged.

For those who may be overwhelmed, or at a loss to muster up self-help programs on their own to experiment with, the Blochs have provided a 24-hour 800 number to call for assistance.

Homeland Security...Highway 8 perilous for drug lords, illegal immigrants & fruit smugglers! High alert on April 11th...

The Border Patrol were busy little bees yesterday at the height of an elevated alert in the San Diego region!

Rather than cruise along the same highways I facilitated about ten days ago to attend the AFI Fest (Dallas) , I threw caution to the wind and let an adventurous spirit lead the way.

Well, my guide must have been a surly confidant of Uncle Sam!

The trek along highways 30, 20, and 10 were uneventful enough - but when I headed down the last leg of my journey homeward bound on Highway 8 (west to San Diego) - I got more than I bargained for.

Sure, some of the landscape was picturesque (more on that in a follow-up post) but had I known the Border Patrol would be buzzin' up my a** throughout the day, I would have taken another less burdensome route.

For example, about twenty minutes after I crossed the California border, a white vehicle with a green emblem on the side panel sped up behind me out-of-the-blue.

At first, I thought it was a Military vehicle.

As it raced on by to official business elsewhere, I spied the name of the Government agency out-of-the-corner of my eye.

Border Patrol.

I'd heard a lot about the all-powerful (overzealous?) elite force run by Homeland Security, but - like many Americans - managed to steer clear of 'em.

I guess my number was up.

About ten miles up the road, a flashing neon sign forewarned that there may be a stop ahead, and that drivers should be ready for a vehicle inspection.

As I inched closer, and my heart beat faster (next to my Green Card in a wallet inside my chest pocket), I noticed a couple of cars parked at the side of the road.

A handful of diligent officers were sifting through a lot of dirty laundry, camping equipment, left-over lunch, and what-have-you.

In addition, a couple of passengers in the car in front of me were being questioned quite vigorously, by a young lady in a green field jacket and spiffy pantaloons.

Gosh, the babe was packing a gun!

When I pulled up, she jawned, and waved me through.

Yeah, no one's interested in wrinkly old white dudes.

Just ask Paris Hilton!

Just as I started to pick up speed and managed to tick off a few miles to compensate for lost time, there was another lull in traffic as vehicles were instructed to slow down - and if necessary - stop for an Officer.

As luck would have it, the man in front of me must have looked suspicious, because he got flagged right off-the-bat.

I sat in my own SUV and waited for the interrogation to end as I twiddled my thumbs.

At one juncture, a hefty middle-aged woman in baggy shorts and matching vest - wearing an official-looking badge emblazoned on the front of her "butch" uniform (Lesbo?) - strode to the back of the pick-up, hauled herself over the back gate of the truck bed, and proceeded to inspect a cooler inside.

Satisfied there was nothing untoward in there, she hopped out.

Now, with a nervous hand, the driver handed over a couple of oranges he plucked out of the glove compartment out of harm's way 'til now.

The meticulous gal gave them a once over, plunked 'em down on her makeshift table at the side of the road, then proceeded to jot down his license plate number.

I guess if they decide to bust the disreputable fellow for smuggling, they'll lock him up in a holding cell where they detain all the "fruits" incarcerated in the prison population.

Once again, I was waved through with little fuss.

I thought the rude interruptions had all dried up at about the witching hour.

No, sir!

Next up?

A search for drugs!

When the vehicle in front pulled up to a line marked on the pavement at the check point, a police dog was inclined to jump up from his snug perch by the Guard's station, then trot up to driver's side of the vehicle to sniff a little.

Nada!

Now, the dog handler turned in my direction with a slightly bemused look on his face.

Was I the culprit who piqued the dog's curiosity?

I inched forward, then stopped, so the dog and I were in line with each other.

Then, without any qualms, I stared directly into the animal's eyes and gave him a look as if to say:

"I'm not in the mood for your nonesense, so don't get any ideas, Bowser!"

He moved on.

If you can believe it, I also encountered another "border check" in an out-of-the-way pass on the way in to the San Diego area just about midnight.

A ubiquitous sign was posted on the gate for the tired and the humbled masses to peruse as they awaited their fate.

It read - "Homeland Security using tax dollars to protect Americans against the threat of Terrorism" - or something to that effect.

Again, travellers in vehicles ahead of me were stopped and questioned, but I was waved through.

I guess it was because I was driving a Ford, do 'ya think?

AFI Dallas...Adrien Brody, Lou Gossett Jr., Janine Turner, Jeremy Renner lit up red carpet! Glittering Fest a smash hit...

Some say film festivals are all about the movies.

True, they are.

However, were it not for high-profile stars trotting down the red carpet, there wouldn't be much glitz or glamor.

Moreover, festival organizers would have to rely on promos focused on a particular demographic to get filmgoers in the door.

AFI Dallas was not wanting for celebs to tease the audiences!

Here is a sampling of a few of the charismatic show biz personalities who lit up the red carpet and sparked a meaningful dialogue about film and the state of the art today in Dallas this week.

Joaquim De Almeida - a co-star of Che (often seen portraying nasty pieces of work like Drug Lords from South America) is one of my favorite character actors who stars in the soon-to-be-released drama "A Burning Plain".

At the screening, gossip mongers were tattling that De Almeida and co-star Kim Bassinger, would be steaming up the silver screen with a smattering of sexy love scenes.

"Yes. We have some intimate moments together," the handsome thespian chuckled.

"In fact, the day before the shoot started, we talked extensively on the telephone about what our approach would be."

In the final analysis, both agreed they were professionals, and that they would just "do it".

"We started with a simple scene which consisted of just a kiss. Then, over the next week, Kim and I built up to the intense moments."

Lou Gossett Jr. appeared on the red carpet to tout his new project premiering at the AFI Dallas, wearing a T-Shirt emblazoned with the word "eracism" on the front in keeping with the plot line of the film.

When I asked him why he chose "The Least Among You", he noted the reason was twofold.

"First, because of my faith. Second, because of the subject matter."

The low-budget short was about the 1st African American to attend a Religious College.

Although Mr. Gossett's acting was excellent as usual, I found the project to be amateurish and poorly-written.

Before he moved on to another reporter, he quipped:

"Our children are our future, not oil."

Cheryl Ladd's daughter - a pretty petite young lady with a glow about her - noted that she talked with the director Paul Solet on the telephone for about four hours before jumping on board.

"Grace was described as a kind-of "Rosemary's Baby," she beamed.

Unfortunately, the talented young actress could not save the project which - by most accounts - bombed miserably at the AFI Dallas Fest.

Patton Oswalt - the perennial funny man - was a little more reserved when he chatted up the media to promote his film, "The Big Fan".

"It's similar to great films of the 70's like Marvin Gardens and Electra Glide in Blue," he noted to a crush of press types jockeying for pictures.

Janine Turner (Friday Nights) appeared on the red carpet on a couple of occasions during the AFI Fest; once, at a screening of Monroe's "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds"; then, later at the end of the week at Texas Film Day when Governor Perry also put in a much-ballyhooed appearance to boast about the State's contribution to the film industry.

Turner was gracious, elegantly dressed, and accessible to fans.

The pretty lady gave me a calling card with a striking photo etched on the front.

Sorry, dudes, I'm not sharing!

The producer - and most of the cast of "Pearl" - sauntered into the press room the night of the premiere for their biography on a Chickasaw Aviator inspired by known-flyer Wiley Post.

The director informed that the production was financed by the Chickasaw nation.

The head of the tribe was a bit taken aback by the high price tag, but paid up, nonetheless.

"The Chief thought it was important to produce this project to put the focus on the Chickasaw people."

I pointed out that in Miss Navajo (a film I took in last year at the Los Angeles Film Festival which featured a Q & A with the director) Native American Indians expressed their concerns that if a language and culture were not kept up in the modern day they would disappear in the next twenty years.

He agreed.

Jeremy Renner - a screen heart-throb to reckon with - was a tad serious when he ran the gauntlet to discuss "Hurt Locker".

"It was a challenging role," he confessed. "Film buffs will have to take in a screening to figure it out."
And, who could forget the big splash that Adrien Brody made on opening night when he strode down the carpet for the premiere of Brothers Bloom?

Judging by the frenzied attention he nabbed that night, Brody is no doubt a Hollywood megastar to contend with, in every sense of the word!

Dallas...police are pigs who harass tourists!

Downtown Dallas is sprinkled with fine museums, chic upscale restaurants to take brunch in, and a bevy of trendy boutiques so you can shop-til-you-drop.

But, just try to plunk down on a knoll of grass for a moment (if you can find one; downtown Dallas is all concrete, after all) and the city's finest will ride out-of-the-blue on a rickety old bike and rudely bark out:

"Get along little doggie."

For example, today I spied a tourist stretch out on a mound of grass to take a respite from it all under a glorious mid-day sun, when he was urged to move on by a couple of law enforcement officers.

When the upscale gentleman in town on business noted he want to take a breather in the parkk for a second or two, one overzealous copper was inclined to snidely remark:

"They don't like that here."

They?

You'd think with the economy failing the way it has been, Dallas and its residents, would be welcoming visitors (and the influx of ready cash) with open arms.

In addition to being thick around the waist and butt, these two losers appeared to be thick in the head as well.

I wanted to point out that one of the last sacred rights an individual has in this great nation is the one that provides that citizens be able to walk the streets freely (and sit in a park openly) without the threat of harassment or a violation of their rights.

But, I expect "they" would have hauled me away and silenced my voice much like they did to another advocate of basic rights and freedoms way back in Dallas in 1963

Dallas, get rid of your "pigs".

After all, they're a detriment to your image!

Nasher Sculpture Garden...a Dallas gem! Inspirational Arts District wows tourists...

I half-expected cowboy towns in Texas to be devoid of any cultural sights to track down.

Not true of Dallas!

A case in point, the Nasher Sculpture Center in the Arts District.

Amid reflecting pools and the soothing sounds of water trickling down from artfully crafted fountains, an impressive array of stragecially-placed sculptures dot the well-manicured gardens.

The collection is not only a knock-out, but an important sampling of work by a handful of the most celebrated sculptors of the the past century.

Open since October 20 (2003), the Nasher Sculpture Center is one of the few institutions in the world devoted to the exhibition, study, and preservation of modern sculpture.

Conceived as a serene urban retreat for the enjoyment of modern art, the Sculpture Center cost $70 million, is 54,000-square feet in size, and was designed by Renso Piano.

Raymond D. Nasher, founder, was one of Dallas’ most influential civic leaders and a patron of the arts.

His passion for modern and contemporary sculpture - and tireless commitment to establish Dallas/Fort Worth as one of the finest cultural desinations in the world - was well-known.

In the final analysis, the philanthropist left a priceless legacy for art lovers to savor for generations to come.

Nasher, according to most accounts, was a down-to-earth man who reached out to all.

One day, a project Manager at the AFI Headquarters lounge remembered the day he drove up to the Nasher residence (designed by celebrated architect M.I. Pei) to set up some equipment for an on-camera interview.

To his astonishment, he encountered a Henry Moore Sculpture at the front door of the Nasher home.

Shortly after the maid admitted him inside, Nasher entered the living-room unannounced, and proceeded to politely ask the blue-collar worker if he'd care for a soft drink.

"Nasher was unaffected by the trappings of his great wealth," he recalled fondly.

There are a couple of outstanding sculptures in the museum that caught my eye when I toured the stunning grounds over the weekend.

Joan Miro (Caress of a Bird) 1967

Here Miro has incorporated common objects into a whimsical totem which depicts a unique female sexuality.

Henry Moore (Vertebrae) 1968

In this remarkable piece, Moore has crafted an appealing arrangement of abstract organic forms from a pair of inter-locking flint rocks that he salvaged from the countryside near his home in England.

Pablo Picasso (Head of Woman) 1958

Picasso's first monumental piece of sculpture facilitated an innovative engraving technique known as Betograve widely-used today in creative circles.

George Segal (Rush Hour) 1983

An intriguing piece that captures a scene from everyday life.

Six commuters trudge along a city street mindlessly and slightly weary of the apparent rat race.

Jonathan Borofsky (Walking to the Sky) 2004

Seven life-size figures briskly walk up a pole as three others lag behind.

A whimsical piece of sculpture which was inspired by a childhood story his father triggered his imagination with.

This sculpture is often used by city dwellers and tourists alike as a visaul "signpost" to locate the Nasher in downtown Dallas.

Dallas AFI...Morenita a cautionary tale about corruption, drug-running & the sacred image of the Virgin Mary!

Alan Jonsson Gavica
(left)

Morenita is a small film in some respects (not grand or sweeping at all) but, in the framework chosen by skilled director Alan Jonsson Gavica, resonates with a certain truth.

In a nutshell, the foreign film is about a Mexican laborer down-on-his luck, who agrees to act as a runner for a drug dealer (his brother) to make ends meet.

When the nefarious activities go awry, the desperate young man - soon-to-be a father - uses a contact to commit an unthinkable crime.

What follows is a Nation's grieving and a no holds-barred struggle between good and evil to restore the nature order of things.

Mr. Gavica is an engaging man who flew in from Mexico to participate in a Q & A at the premiere of his action/adventure piece at AFI Dallas the end of last week.

As we chatted each other up on the shuttle bus to the venue in the West Village (the Magnolia Theatre) where the low-budget independent was being unveiled, it was evident that the articulate auteur was quite knowledgeable about the art of filmmaking.

He confessed that on occasion, in order to get the footage he needed, it was necessary to tell a "white lie" or two.

For example, the image of the Virgin Mary at the Basilica, was an integral part of the plot line for "Morenita".

However, the priests at the Holy site rarely ever permitted filmmakers - even tourists - to photograph the revered image of the Virgin Mary.

So, Mr. Gavica and his producer quickly conjured up a tall tale, to appease the powers-that-be.

"We're shooting a documentary on the Virgin Mary and the Catholic Faith," he earnestly asserted to Church Officials.

On this false premise, Gavica was able to gain access to a location needed to wrap the project.

Would he burn in hell for pulling the fast one?

"They'll probably find out," he grinned sheepishly.

"You betcha! 'Cause I'm going to report it in my post on the film," I laughed maniacally.

In the final analysis, though, Gravica doubted they'd denounce him or "Morenita" publicly.

"They don't want to give us the publicity."

As to the film itself - personally - I found Gravica's occasional "light touch" at the helm refreshing.

For instance, subtle flourishes here and there resonated strongly with my artistic sensibilities on occasion, when least expected.

And, likewise, I was jolted emotionally when Gavica switched into high gear and splattered the screen with gritty realism essential to plot twists that happened along unexpectedly about half-way through.

A main story line which focused on police corruption in Mexico also rang true in view of recent news reports filtering out of that troubled nation in recent days about the widespread graft.

While not Oscar material, "Morenita" is entertaining bill-of-fare offered up in Spanish with English sub-titles.

Although Morenita will definitely cash in below the border, film buffs may find the feature worth taking a gander at, too, on U.S. soil.

AFI Dallas...The Cove, The Burning Plain, Valentino & Pearl are films to keep eye on! Festival a rousing success...

The Cove, an informative tale on wild-life preservation from a TV producer turned activist, is one of a handful of films I missed at AFI Dallas due to scheduling conflicts.

Many film buffs faced the same dilemma as they struggled over festival choices and ended up - like moi - tossing a coin!

All kidding aside, of the 180 or so AFI offerings this year, there were a few stand-outs worth catching at the local movie house or renting at the DVD outlet nearest you when they're released sometime in the near future.

Here is a run-down (and a synopsis) of a few of 'em.

The Burning Plain

In this intense drama, director Guillermo Arriago explores the past and present and the curious way both affect several people separated by time and space.

"It's all about a journey to redemption," according to the producers.

Starring Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron.

Valentino: The Last Emperor

An intimate peak into the scintillating world of legendary fashion designer Valentino.

The filmmaker insightfully pulls back the veil and artfully spotlights the icon and a celebrated career that spanned the decades - and in the process - impacted the rag trade immeasurably.

Tattooed Under Fire

Director Nancy Schiesari was passionate about her project when I spoke to her one day on-the-fly in the AFI lounge at Victory Park.

"Tattooed" is an in-depth look at military personnel and their penchant for body art.

"The tattoo is a language that soldiers use to bond and communicate with each other."

Ultimately, the life-changing filmmaking foray, amounts to a provocative, poignant, and highly personal look at the human and cultural cost of war, she alleges in the final analysis.

Pearl

The inspiring tale of a young Chickasaw woman with a passion for flying and mentor Wiley Post who helped the young dreamer accomplish her lofty goal to become an aviator.

Directed by King Hollis (The Accident)

Whatever it Takes

Director Christopher Wong focused his revealing lens on a remarkable man who runs a center for Science and Mathematics for underprivileged black youths in the Bronx.
(Documentary)

Push Button House

A delightful peak at an environmental wonder crafted by creative genius Adam Kalkin.

With a visionary eye towards the future, a packing crate is transformed into a sleek, modern pre-fabricated home.

Directed by Ryan Silbert & Robert Profusek

The Cove

Director Lois Psihoyos throws the spotlight on Richard O'Barry, the creator of the original "Flipper" TV Series.

In this riveting expose, the activist uncovers the ills that befall animals held in captivity against their will.

Zombie Girl: The Movie

A 12-year-old's journey into the topsy-turvy world of film production not only entertains, but ends up being instructive to young filmmakers in the throes of crafting their first project .

Directed by Aaron Marshall, Justin Johson, and Erik Mauck.

Hollywood Beats

In the wake of the success of Slumdog Millionaire, a dreamer's musings - which unfold in an uplifting manner in Bollywood

In a nutshell, it is a tale about a down-on-his-luck dancer who sees his fortunes change due to a chance encounter.

A celebration of the indomitable human spirit.

Director/Screenwriter: Mehul Shaw
Executive Producer: Kathryn Taylor
(Patron of the Arts)

As they say at MGM:

That's all for now, folks!

AFI Dallas...Rock Slyde spoof on Film Noir genre sparks interest! Patrick Warburton & Andy Dick in top comedic form...

Andy Dick and Patrick Warburton appear on screen in top comedic form in the Independent feature, Rock Slyde, which premiered at the AFI Dallas Film Festival this past week.

The idea for the off-beat film was inspired by the handsome director's mother, Chris Dowling noted on the red carpet, with a sly smile on his face.

"Can't you make a movie that doesn't have any violence or gratuitous sex in it," she pointedly asked the talented screenwriter one day.

The Clark Kent look-a-like rose to the occasion by penning a script that hits the funny bone more often than not.

Patrick Warburton (private dick Rock Slyde) adeptly plays the role to the hilt - with a droll unaffected approach, mind you - that ultimately takes a poke at the film noir genre it sprang from.

Andy Dick - who sports a beard in this part - is hilarious in a zany role that is decidedly off-beat.

Part of the reason the cult figure the TV personality plays on screen succeeds so admirably is due to inpeccable timing on the part of Dick and his innate ability to create a character that resonates with its own truth within a specific context.

Unfortunately, Rock Slyde - the movie - lags at times.

Although Dowling is a competent writer with original ideas, the script should have been tightened a smidgen, to ensure lazy minds didn't wander a tad.

In fact, when I exchanged notes with a couple of other industry-types, they admitted they - too - started to snooze a little about three-quarters of the way through Slyde beneath the floodlights.

In its current incarnation, the full-length feature tends to lurch and burp a bit; then, roll over and die a second or two, before unexpecedly picking up again as it races to a hilarious finale.

In many respects the entertaining piece of fluff is uneven - but fixable - in my estimation.

For a low-budget feature (shot on an old soundstage at Sunset Blvd & Gower Street in the heart of Hollywood) that wrapped in a six short creatively-stuffed weeks, I found the production values to be surprisingly rich.

Warburton and Dick also manage to rise above the material and make it an inviting popcorn movie film buffs on the edge of the mainstream may be able to warm up to.

Teens may guffaw a lot, too, quite possibly transforming the little-movie-that-could into an unexpected hit come the lazy days of summer.

Of course, such a scenario is only within reach, if distribution is forthcoming, and a visionary studio backs Rock Slyde with eye-catching promos geared toward the market, of course!

1 thumb & 1 half-knuckle up!

AFI Dallas...Mike Tyson! A champ & chump as seen through eyes of LSD-tripping Director James Tobak!

"Tyson" is an explosive - mostly insightful - foray into the personal and professional life of the boxer as seen through the drug-induced eyes of director James Tobak (Exposed & Pick-up Artist).

Electricity ziz-zagged lthrough the air like a bolt of lightning whenever the larger-than-life Champion step into the ring.

In time, frenzied fans ended up riveted to the edge of their seats uncertain of the fighter's fate; after all, in view of Tyson's unpredictable conduct in the past, who knew what might next in the ring.

Although there were a number of knock-outs (thirteen of them in the 1st round) - on occasion - fights were brought to an abrupt halt due to Tyson's uncontrollable rage which often pushed him beyond the limits.

At one juncture, Toback highlights a title rematch with Evander Holyfield - and when he does - the experience is gut-wrenching as shocked fans witness the infamous ear-biting incident which shamed the former golden boy of yesteryear.

"I was in a rage. So mad, that I just had to hurt him," Tyson recalled in one intense reveal on the silver screen.

The fast-paced documentary proceeds to follow the troubled athlete from his days as a hoodlum on the mean streets at age fourteen to the current day as he ponders a return to the ring.

Yup, Tyson once held the world in the palm of his celebrated fist, but it all slipped away.

The phone would ring at four o'clock in the morning.

When Toback plucked it up - at first - there was an eerie pause.

"James?"

"Yeah, Mike. I'm here."

Then, the two pals would ramble on in a conversation that spanned topics from death, to murder and suicide, fame and money, and the state of the fight game.

From this venting, Tobak stumbled on the idea to craft a documentary on the life and times of the once-celebrated kid from the wrong side of the tracks who rose to the height of his game with dizzying success.

"When I heard him wheeze on the other end of the phone one night, I suddenly realized that Tyson had asthma."

Then, the underlying theme for the documentary evolved.

"That's the reason he went for a knock-out in the 1st round. Mike was afraid he'd run out of breath and that he'd better down his opponent as quickly as possible."

"My approach was psycho-analytical," Tobak noted to the rapt audience at the Magnolia Theatre the other night, where the much-anticipated film was being screened under the auspices of AFI Dallas.

For ten hours a day, over a five-day period, he interviewed Mike.

The reflections - Tysons's musings, his angst, what-have-you - were offered up by way of split screen images and in a montage that cleverly maneuvered a probing reveal.

In addition, old news clips and flashbacks were artfully juxtaposed, to spark the bio and move it along at an entertaining pace.

Early on, Tyson admitted that he owed his success to a mentor, who pushed him on unrelentingly.

"He'd always be saying - "You look good, Mike" - or "You're in great physical shape", things like that."

At first, Mike surmised his manager might be gay.

"I realized one day that he was just building my confidence. Making me believe in myself."

After following the trainer's advice explicitly in the ring, it did not escape Tyson's attention, that he won all the bouts in the wake of the man's precise hard-hitting boxing tips.

When he passed to spirit suddenly one day, Tyson was devastated.

"My whole world fell apart," he recalled sadly.

Shortly thereafter, fast-talking promoter - "Don King" - breezed into the arena.

Tyson didn't have any kind words for the high-profile fight-man who took advantage of Mike in more ways than one.

"That serpentine piece of trash stole from me," he hissed into camera.

The Robin Gibbons fiasco was also fleshed out, too, in spite of the fact, the territory has been well-mined.

In one funny scene, Mike & Robin are caught in a sit-down interview with Barbara Walters.

As Gibbons poured her heart out about Tyson's rages - and terrible mood swings - the camera panned to Tyson who - not once - offered up a word in edgewise.

No, he sat meek as a lamb.

At one point, Walters is captured glancing at Tyson with a look that seems to say:

"Are you going to take this sitting down, Mike?"

"I knew they wanted me to get upset and fly into a rage. It was a set-up. I wasn't going to fall for it," he lamented.

On the subject of sex and relationships, Mike noted for the record:

"I like to wound my prey. Then, dominate."

In fact, Tyson - in some respects - is kind of kinky.

Tobak giggled that the buffed boxer once slept totally naked with just his prize belt on.

Tyson is potent filmmaking in many respects - but overall - falls flat.

In the final analysis, outdated filmic techniques hinderTobak's ability to impact the medium, or strike gold with his subject.

During a Q & A that was terribly cerebral - and self-indulgent - audience members were inclined to shut down.

In fact, before Tobak had the opportunity to field questions from fans, they'd all slipped out of the theatre to seek more entertaining climbs elsewhere on the Festival grounds.

Maybe those LSD trips - which he admitted bummed him out so many years ago - have had a more lasting impact than he'll ever know.

It was evident to film buffs present, though, that Tobak's lost that magic touch!

AFI Dallas...Governor attends Texas Film day; Peter Bogdanovich reveals he's an arrogant son-of-a-bit**; Neiman Marcus gala closes out fest!

Urban Cowboy shot in Texas!

The Governor trotted down the red carpet glad-handing celebrated guests and members of the press, Director Peter Bogdanovich accepted a Dallas Festival Award for his contribution to the film industry in the Lone Star State, and film clips underscored the number of quality movies shot in Texas over the past couple of decades.

The AFI event was a dizzying high-energy affair that attracted locals and movie stars from far-and-wide, who touted the industry at the drop of a Texan ten- gallon hat.

Aaron Norris (Chuck's son) noted that he pushed hard to ensure that "Walker" was shot in Texas, in spite of the fact it may have been cheaper to lens elsewhere.

His pretty young daughter, recently wrapped up a filmmaking course at Pepperdine University on the Southern California Coast, just a hop-and-a-skip away from the ritzy climbs of Malibu.

We joked about the fact many a leisure hour was spent surfing ideal beach conditions.

"Dad took advantage of it when he came to visit me," she giggled.

Character actor Barry Corbin (No Country for Old Men) grumbled about the fact producers often shot in New Mexico when they were depicting locales that were supposed to be Texas

Of course, new tax incentives to be introduced in the legislature later this month, may change all that.

According to a Dallas Film Society official I spoke to yesterday, within the next thirty days, sliding-scale benefits will be introduced to lighten the financial burden for filmmakers here.

On the podium a few minutes later, the Governor confirmed that.

"We're shouting loud and hard to Hollywood. We're here!"

When I asked a couple of the locals if the Gov was well-liked, or doing a good job, they shrugged.

Then, they confessed they were die-hard Democrats and not behind the politician one-hundred percent, for obvious reasons.

I should have known by the finely-tailored dress suit - and bright red tie with floating patterns - that the man was a shill for the Republican party.

Betty Lyn Buckley (Tender Mercies) noted that she moved back to Texas (she's currently residing on a ranch outside of town fulfilling her dream to train & work with cutting horses) applauded the State's efforts to revive the film industry in Texas.

On Tuesday, she'll receive a Texas Medal Award for the Arts.

How was it to work with Robert Duvall?

She emphasized that he was the best "silent communicator" in the acting field today.

Peter Bogdanovich was a big disappointment.

Earlier in the day, he screened a Director's cut of "Texasville" , which was downright sloppy and unprofessional.

When I attempted to pin him down with a couple of questions regarding the issue, he became rude and insulting.

Was he in a state of denial?

At one point, a gust of wind blew a handful of notes out of my hand, and they fluttered to the ground at my feet unceremoniously.

I was inclined to continue on without interruption so I wouldn't hold Mr. Bogdanovich up.

The aging film director (who looked like a mummified version of himself) was so slow on the uptake, though, that he ended up revealing a mean-spirited side which took me by surprise.

With a smirk on his face, he quipped:

"You dropped your notes."

That was obvious to any fool on the carpet.

Was it necessary to rub it in???

When I bravely moved on in spite of the hiccup, bystanders noted that I demonstrated my innate ability to handle unexpected disasters in a professional classy way.

In spite of that, Bogdanovich chose to twist the knife in a beat or two later.

After he walked away, he half-turned and smirked, "You dropped your pen, too".

It was evident now that Bogdanovich was an unfeeling arrogant son-of-a-bit** without an ounce of compassion.

In the final analysis, the gust of wind that sent my notes flying asunder, was a Godsend!

Up until that point in time, I had been wrestling over how I would deal with Mr. Bogdanovich's shoddy presentation earlier in the day.
Although I there was sufficient cause to criticize his artistic judgment at this point in his career, I I was hopeful I could salvage an image I'd been quite respectful of, until he demonstrated his mean-spirited character on the red carpet last night.

No problemo, now!

A review of the screening of Texasville, and thoughts on his Q & A, will follow in a few days.

Shortly after the Governor stood on the podium and tooted the big Texas horn, the guests trundled off to Neiman Marcus for the closing night Gala.

At the entrance to the upscale store, two lines of well-dressed waiters stood at attention with trays of White Wine in expensive glass goblets and expensive imported beer.

Inside, the tony elite snapped up scrumptious finger food prepared to perfection by a top notch local catererer.

Many males were decked out in smart suits, with bola ties, and wide-brimmed cowboy hats.

The ladies were elegantly dressed-to-the-nines.

For example, Susan Flasdick was attired in a stunning Alice & Olivia cocktail dress with subtle decorative beading, which was a knock-out.

Meanwhile, the musical stylings of Deryl Dodd, revved up the high-spirited guests who hobnobbed with gay abandon amid a setting that was decidely rich in festive spirit.

When the potent wine started to give me a buzz, I begged off for the night.

At the door, Neiman Marcus bid the guests adieu, as they pressed gift bags into their finely-manicured bejweled hands.

Imagine my shock when I opened up the goodie-bag later and got wind of the mysterious contents inside: a bottle of Barbecue Sauce and two stickers touting the Texas Film scene.

Those cheap bastar**.

AFI Dallas...Awards to Rock Prophecies; Prom Night in Mississippi; Skin! Glittering Festival wraps down...

Films about a legendary rock star photographer (Robert Wright), the 1st integrated Prom Night in Mississippi, and a haunting tale about two children surviving in the wilds (St. Nick) nabbed top prizes at a glittering soiree last night at the AFI Dallas Film Festival.

As filmmakers sat in suspense at the edge of their seats at the AMC Theatre at NorthPark mall, I chatted up a handsome woman who sat next to me.

Turns out, Rossie Grose was there to accept a trophy they landed for their well-received film, "Prom Night in Mississippi".

We joked about the prepared "acceptance speech" the die-hard film buff was about to read on their behalf.

Would Ms. Grose thank all the little people in true Hollywood style?

"Yes," she nervously giggled.

Earlier in the evening, President & CEO of AFI Dallas was tight-lipped on the red carpet about the prestigious Environmental Award he'd be handing off to one lucky filmmaker.

"My wife and I know nothing about film. We're just like any regular person who enjoys movies and takes one in now and then if it piques our interest," he beamed in so many words.

"Rock Prophecies" won a Best Documentary Award.

The upbeat popular entry - it was the highest vote-getter across the board from audiences and jurors alike - featured the rock band Sick Puppies and took an in-depth foray in the world of Robert Wright, rock photographer extraordinaire.

Personally, I was thrilled when "Skin" was singled out for a prize, too.

On a couple of occasions I have had the opportunity to pick the director's head (Anthony Fabian) a bit on the red carpet.

Last night he gleefully quipped:

"The Lone Star state is Skin's lucky star."

The drama focuses on a true story about apartheid in South Africa and was blessed with bravado performances by Sam Neil and Alice Krige.

Gigantic (Director Matt Aselton) - a sell-out with film buffs throughout the festival - won the well-deserved honor of being pushed into the spotlight, too, when it snapped up the $25,000 TARGET Narrative Filmmaker Award.

"This film was hard to pin down. Matt is an amazing filmmaker," one Judge was inclined to enthuse.

Through a spokesperson the director labelled the experience as an "awesome" one.

"Everyone go get drunk for me."

"Against the Current" director Peter Callahan ( the film co-starred Mary Tyler Moore) was quite humble, thanked his supporters, and noted that he fell in love with the city.

St. Nick won a top honor when it received an award for the best film to be shot in-and-around Texas.

At the high-energy after-party at the AFI Festival Lounge, the director David Lowery noted that he would use part of the $9,000.00 prize money to pay off bills!

I expect he'll put the $11,000.00 post production winnings towards work on his next project which remains unknown at this point in time.

"I won," the producer for "Suddenly Last Winter" cried out when she spied me worming my way through the mad crush of party-goers at AFI headquarters in Victory Park.

A deserving prize, indeed!

Kazik Radwanski’s "Princess Margaret Blvd" won the award for Best Short with Honorable Mentions going to both Todd Luoto’s OIL CHANGE and Denis Villeneuve’s NEXT FLOOR.

“Hug” AND “Chicken Cowboy” also won in the student film categories.

“This year, we were fortunate to have so many exceptional films that challenged the audience artistically and conceptually. It was a very competitive year in that respect and while we were all the beneficiaries of that, by its nature the jury had the difficulty of having to choose one film to honor over the others," one AFI rep noted to the tony audience in attendance," a festival rep gushed.

The artistic Director added:

“In our third year, the city of Dallas and the international film community truly have begun to take note of the distinctive personality of this film festival – both through the evolution of our programming and what is becoming more accepted every year – the peerless presentation and hospitality that have been hallmarks of AFI DALLAS from the very beginning.”

Highlights of the Film fest this past week included a Centerpiece Screening of Guillermo Arriga’s THE BURNING PLAIN with Arriaga and Joaquim de Almeida in attendance; a screening of the cinema classic CHINATOWN with Robert Towne (which included a presentation of the AFI DALLAS Star Award to him prior to a special Q & A with film critic Richard Schickel); and a special screening of THE LAST PICTURE SHOW with Peter Bogdanovich in attendance.

Bogdanovich was scheduled to be honored with the AFI DALLAS Star Award the following day at the Texas Day celebration.

Also honored with the AFI DALLAS Star Award were Kathryn Bigelow (prior to a screening of her film THE HURT LOCKER) and Rita Hayworth (presented posthumously).

Meanwhile, Henry Selick was given the Texas Avery Award for his animation techniques which have greatly impacted the industry in recent years.

The festival also featured Talk Show panels at the Nasher Sculpture Center and Speakeasy panels at the AFI DALLAS Festival Lounge.

The festival closed with AFI DALLAS Closing Night Gala presentations of Louis Psihoyos’s exciting entry - THE COVE - and James Toback’s TYSON (Thursday, April 2) at AMC NorthPark. Both directors attended the screenings and remained after for Q & A sessions.

Other notable attendees at this year’s AFI DALLAS Film Festival included Alice Krige, Jordan Ladd, Patton Oswalt, Rob Siegel, Devon Aoki, Robin Wright Penn, Justin Kirk, Jeremy Renner, Jason Ritter, Jess Weixler, Patrick Warburton, Elaine Hendrix, Tiffany Shepis, Monique Parent, Carlos Cuaron, Matt Tyrnauer, Lou Gossett Jr., Doug Pray, Tim McCanlies and Janine Turner.

AFI DALLAS showcased 81 features and 96 shorts (a total of 177 films from 22 countries).

The Austin Film Festival has put out a call for creative artists to submit their work for screenplay, teleplay, and film competitions for the upcoming Festival slated for October 22 - 29th (2009).

The Austin Film Festival's mission is to further the art, craft, and business of screenwriting and filmmaking by providing unique year-round cultural events and services, enhancing public awareness and participation, and encouraging dynamic and long-lasting community partnerships.

Founded in 1994, the Austin Film Festival (AFF) was the first organization of its kind to focus on the writers’ creative contribution to film.

AFF originally consisted of the prestigious "Heart of Film" screenwriters conference (a forum for craft development, inspiration, and the networking and launching of careers created for screenwriters) which was historically under-represented.

AFF has since grown to serve filmmakers and all of Austin’s arts community.

Today, the festival encompasses a wealth of year-round programming dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the art and impact of storytelling.

AFI Dallas...Patrick Warburton greets YMCA After School All Stars kids! Movie treat...

Patrick Warburton greeted a few hundred local kids in the Dallas area yesterday afternoon much to their delight.

AFI Dallas partnered with the Dallas YMCA After School All Stars to treat the youngsters to an afternoon movie at NorthPark Mall.

The age range of the excited guests appeared to between about 5 - 15 years of age.

Each child sported a torquoise T-shirt with AFI Dallas emblazoned on the front in bold-faced lettering.

A logo on the sleeve singled out the generous sponsor, TXU (Energy), who contributed big $$$ to support the upbeat event.

When each new group of kids appeared on the red carpet (a novel fun idea in-of-itself) they pointed to the logo on their short-sleeves and hollered out on queue:

"TXU"

At one point, a couple of outgoing boisterous teenage girls sang out "YMCA" (the popular Village People hit) as they formed the alphabet letters Y-M-C-A with a flourish of their hands and arms.

Warburton (Seinfeld, Rules of Engagement, Bee Movie) noted this was the 1st time he had ever been involved in a project like this, which he warmed up to at the drop-of-a-hat.

"I have four kids of my own. So, any time I can be of help, I'll be there."

When I asked if any of his own children were following in his footsteps acting, he said "no".

"Whatever they want to do for a career, I'll support," he quietly responded.

Warburton was on hand to attend a premiere of his latest movie - Rock Slyde - slated for later in the evening at AFI Dallas.

It was apparent from all the beaming faces in the crowd that the outing was appreciated and that a fun school excursion was had by all.

AFI Dallas...scuttlebutt; Big Fan director prefers mid-level actors to pain-in-the-butt superstars! Janine Taylor makes splash on red carpet...

Writer/Director Robert Siegel amazed me with his honesty on the red carpet last night.

When I asked him who he would choose to work with if he could have his pick, he looked me dead in-the-eye and stated matter-of-fact, that he was comfortable with mid-level actors.

"I'm not powerful enough in the industry to control big name stars, like Brad Pitt; besides, they come with too much baggage," he quipped without any qualms or worries about ramifications.

"They're a pain in the butt."

He was quick to add that the exception was Johnny Depp.

"I have have been offered scripts with big names attached, but I passed."

A die-hard New Yorker, he has no desire to up-and-move to the golden state.

Siegel was a great sports enthusiast as a kid, so over the years he longed to lens a feature about the "Giants".

"Big Fan" is an intriguing tale about a sports fan who becomes obsessed with a player who he later gets into a physical altercation with.

Oh, the humiliation.

Patton Oswalt stars in this moody piece.

Although Oswalt is quick on the uptake - and the funnyman is capable of delivering up snappy one-liners at whim (which I have been witness to) - the up-and-coming star chose to closely follow the tightly-written script.

He noted that the "Big Fan" is reminiscent of 70's films like "Electra Glide in Blue" and also "Marvins Gardens".

"It's a tale of fu**ed up redemption," he asserted last night.

I was quite delighted to meet the producers from "Like Dandelion Dust", also.

"We tried to stay true to the best-selling novel by Karen Kingsbury. In fact, fans who have screened the feature have been pleased with the end result," one of the baby-faced Downes brothers (producers) beamed with pride at the glittering premiere last night.

It is a sort-of legal thriller about a battle for the custody of a child.

Respected Jon Gunn directs popular star Mira Sorvino,

The "Two Bobs" director - Tim McCanlies - was basking in the glow of all the attention coming his way for his off-beat project which is a foray into the scintillating world of Video Gamemakers.

In a nutshell, the "2 Bobs" is a quirky who-dunnit about two tecnie nerds who have their software stolen.

As they endeavour to track down the culprits responsible for the theft, they are thrust into the disreputable underworld of spammers and Internet hoodlums.

Janine Taylor (Friday Nights) trotted the carpet on her way to a screening of an old-time classic, "Gentleman Prefer Blondes".

We both joked about the fact neither of us had ever seen the Maryilyn Monroe comedy on the silver screen, only on the boob tube over the years.

Later, at the Festival lounge at the Magnolia Theatre, a tasty smorgasbord had been laid out for theatre-goers - imported cheese and crackers, mouth-watering succulent fruit (including fresh strawberries dipped in rich dark chocolate) - and a wide assortment of finger-licking cocktail food.

The Theatre recently installed an eye-catching series of original artworks by a talented young artist, Clint Scism.

The humorous pieces are basic cut-outs, maneuvered artfully onto layered levels of glass, in a sort-of distinctive collage-like fashion.

Moderately priced, too.

The lobby was buzzing with excited film buffs chatting each other up in the lobby.

AFI Dallas screenings are mostly-sold out this year, after all.

If you haven't slipped into NorthPark Mall or the Magnolia Theatre yet to catch a flick, you have about two days left to say you were part of the AFI Dallas Film Festival phenomenon 2009.

See 'ya there!

Screen Actors Guild...producers agree to tentative commercial contract!

News from SAG President Allen Rosenberg is that the joint SAG/AFTRA Commercial Contracts Negotiating Committee have reached a tentative agreement with advertisers early this morning in New York City.

In his upbeat e-mail communication, Rosenberg applauded the negotiators.

"I would like to thank and congratulate the hard-working staff members for their unity and collaboration over the past months, starting with the W & W meetings, and especially during the long 6 weeks of negotiations."

"It is clear that when SAG members work together," he added enthusiastically, "and focus on common goals to benefit actors, that we really can accomplish many things."

More details of the tentative agreement will be released once the Joint SAG/AFTRA Board has met.

AFI Dallas...Britney Spears electrifies nightlife; celebrity brings out ugly side; Father of year is...

Britney breezes into dust bowl!

As the AFI shuttle bus turned the corner, we were suddenly swept up into a thong of trussed up teens heading off to the American Airlines Stadium to catch the Britney Spears concert.

In fact, Dallas fans felt so privileged to have the charismatic star in their midst, that all stops were pulled out in a bold-faced effort to sidle up and bask a little in the glow of her celebrated light.

A ticket - whether it be for a whopping $2000 in the front-row-seat - or tagged at a paltry $150 up in the boondocks - was definitely an entree into an exclusive social set many were pining for if only for one night.

Unfortunately, a few ugly personality traits reared their head, as the scenario unfolded before me.

Ah, fame and celebrity bring out the worst in people.

For example, one AFI photographer, had been quite congenial and buddy-buddy with his fellow paparazzi (even inclined to glad-hand all the AFI staff and guests when he made his round through the Festival lounges and red carpet events each day) up 'til last evening.

When he caught wind of a chi-chi party Ms. Spears may be attending, he surreptitiously slipped out a back door so he could crash it on the sly with the specific intention of getting a jump on exclusive publicity stills.

Tsk! Tsk!

In contrast, one local sportscaster landed the glorious honor of "Father of the year in" in my eyes, when he generously gave up his ticket to ensure his 14 year-old-daughter could party it up in the Fox Network suite (center row at the high-energy concert) with her best friend as when Britney strutted her stuff on the welcoming Dallas stage.

Moi?

Well, there wasn't any intense desire to follow the madding crowd.

After all, at a party hosted by CineVegas last year, I was able to mix-and-mingle with Ms. Spears when she quietly slipped in unnoticed by fans and the paparazzi.

The classy sophisticated party-goers in attendance barely batted-an-eye and left the - at times, harried pop chanteuse - alone.

Some people have impeccable manners, you know!
